Critics' Lounge / Re: Isometric Walk Cycle

Could I add a frame without throwing off the look of the whole animation? Might it be possible to angle the leg back on that frame to eliminate the problem you mentioned?

Critics' Lounge / Isometric Walk Cycle

I have been working on an isometric walkcycle. Isometric walkcycles I have found to be very difficult but I think this one is nearly ready. The shading still needs work but I'm not worried about that at the moment. Does everything else look okay? I'm a little worried about the height of a couple of the frames which might need to be adjusted a pixel or two one way or the other. Also the speed needs to be increased a little I think. What does the Critic's Lounge have to say?

Have you considered reducing the image size and then reducing the color count in order to get some quick pixel type graphics? These examples only took a few minutes and i think the character would fit in better. (Sorry I didn't bother to cut the character out before working on the images.)

Critics' Lounge / Re: Tile graphics: graves

I think if you arranged the graves in more of a rows and columns layout they would appear more like something that was constructed as opposed to a natural feature of the landscape. As is they look something like tree stumps. Also something like a fence or wall to enclose them would make them stand out more.

I've been working on my isometric illustrations again. I feel like I'm improving but would like some comments. Also I created some lighting effects which I think add a lot of character to the scene but I'm worried that the shadows will be a problem. In order to look correct the character would need some sort of dynamic shadow which is pretty far beyond my AGS capabilities. Below are the examples. This is how the character would look without a shadow when other objects in the room have shadows.

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who played my game and voted for it. It is truly an honor to be the winner especially when the other entries were so outstanding. It is a gratifying feeling to think that someone might have actually enjoyed my little story. It makes all the hard work and frustration worthwhile. I have made some progress on a more polished version but it's a busy time of year and I probably won't have it finished for a while. In the meantime I will keep my eyes open for another interesting MAGS theme.

MAGS OCTOBER 2014
A Tainted Treat
I created this game for the MAGS competition. It is a brief game about a young boys adventures on Halloween.
I'm planning to improve it in a few areas over the next few weeks but it plays fine now.
Don't forget to play the other MAGS entries and vote in the competition.
(I can only afford one screenshot because the game doesn't have very many rooms.)

Thanks to everyone for their nice comments regarding my game. I apologize for the issues you had during gameplay. About the small hotspots, I was thinking the status bar gui would help alleviate that since a player could see when on a hotspot but I'll use larger hotspots in the future.
Spoiler
It may be too dark or not obvious enough but there is a tree branch in the shape of a pointing finger that was intended to help lead the player to the old house.

I was thinking I would put it in the "Completed Games Announcement" thread in a weeks (after fixing a few things) but I'll go ahead and do that now.

My game is complete. I'm sure I'll be the proud winner of last place with this creation. I was unable to get the main character to walk to a spot when looking/interacting/inventory using. But it doesn't hamper the game too much. I would have liked to add some more interaction to make the world a little bit more alive but I guess you can't have everything in a month.

My game will be ready in a couple hours.  It'll be a little rough but fully functional.

I will be attempting a game for this month's competition. So far I am calling the game "A Tainted Treat". I have been working on improving my isometric pixel drawing and thought this would be a good test.  Below is a small sample. This is just a piece of one background, I can't use a whole one because the game will probably only have four or five. My game will also feature overly simplistic puzzles and shoddily done animations. Stay tuned for updates.

Critics' Lounge / Re: Character + Animation

Your animation is off to a good start but needs some refinement in a couple of areas.  When doing an animation your poses should adhere to some sort of baseline. It looks like you tried to create an up and down bob motion by simply moving your poses within the frame. I added a stable baseline in this paintover so that you can see where a surface should be.  I also added a toe bend in frame 1 and 4.  You should fix the other two frames where  his toe goes below where the baseline is. Remember that your character will be moving against a background (not within a gif frame). I added some reference lines at his nose so that you can see his that he only moves up and down. Reference lines like this help me alot when animating to keep things where they should be, you might give them a try.

Critics' Lounge / Re: 8bit Opening Theme :D

Reminds me of Mega Man which is high praise since those games have some of the best music in the history of gaming. Should work fantastic as an opening theme.

 Hello All,
I've been working on some isometric buildings and stuff and was wondering if the Critics Lounge might have some ideas on how to improve it as it seems a little bland to me.  So without further ado.

The grass pattern needs some tweaking and I may have gone a little overboard on the dirt on the sidewalk. But I'd like to hear any ideas that other might have. Thanks.

Thanks for the feedback gentlemen.  Looks like the green wall I used on the kitchen was universally reviled.  I should have known better than to use a gradient.  I appreciate taking the time to do a paintover Limony.  Yours is definitely an improvement.  I think I'll try some other things using your paintover as a guide.  A wallpaper pattern perhaps?

Hello Critic's Loungers,
I've been working on some backgrounds for a game I've had in mind for some time and wanted to get some feedback before continuing on.  The first is a basement office:

The second is a kitchen with character example (he's a fox, hands in pockets):

As you can see I've thrown out perspective by adopting something like a platform game style.  I was thinking that character motion would be almost exclusively left and right (added benefit of reducing walkcycles) and that I would use very thin walkable areas.  I haven't experimented yet but will that cause any problems?  These two, of course, still lack some details and finishing but I'd really like some feedback on how anyone thinks a game in this style might work.  Thanks.

Eric: I appreciate you spending time to do paint-overs.  They look good and your suggestions seem to be within my scope of abilites.  I'll try a few out and hopefully post an updated version.
Andail: Thanks for the criticism. I'm certainly not going for a wacky style.  The below image shows my perspective sketch.  I did bend the rules a bit with the far wall.  It's flat but I thought that this would make it seem less wacky.  Maybe it would have been better to adhere more closely to the perspective I had laid out.

Hello Critics Loungers.  I've finally decided to stop lurking in these forums and post something.  I've been working on improving my art abilities and have created some backgrounds that I feel are good but still badly need some texturing and/or shading.  What appears to be a chalkboard on the left wall is actually a window.  I'll probably be putting blinds on it eventually.  The door on the right is also still unfinished.  I know it is sparsely furnished, this is a plot element.  I'd really love some simple texture/shading techniques you might have in your repertoire.  Thank in advance for your help.
