This could just be me but did anyone think this might be a more philosophical post based on the topic title?

It's not only you. The main reason behind my question was to get a better understanding of the subject. I did some 3 seconds videos for almost each death scene. However, when released, you'll notice they do not show the character being dead at all. For instance, you can see him get sucked into deep space while wearing his spacesuit, then he'll be standing in the middle of the 'death room' talking to the player -perhaps giving hints on how to avoid that certain way of death-... I already explained that to the people emailing me. What triggered that topic from the first place was my memories of game characters as a kid, I got attached less to characters whom I had seen their corpses... while an explosion of a ship in a space shooter game did not affect me at all (no corpse visible) so yeah, it is philosophical :)

I understand what you meant after reading the posts and yes, this topic is somewhat philisophical ... what I meant was that based on the topic title alone, I thought this post might have some connection to Frankenstein. Lol.

Thanks for your comments, guys. I wasnt planning on going for "photo realism" when I started this but it kind of ended up that way. Digital painting came much easier to me than I expected. Probably because ctrl+z doesn't work for anything but a computer program ... unfortunate.

WE NEED YOUR VOICE!

We are looking for people who are decent impressionists. That is- with moderate practice you can hear a celebrity voice and do a fairly accurate impression.

this is a fan game and includes characters that need to sound like (our close to) the actors that played these characters (many of the main cast, we've already found voice actors for but there are still some main characters we are taking auditions for). However, most of the characters in This game are characters we created so it doesn't matter what their voice sounds like as much. So even if you don't feel you can do justice to the actors we need, we may still be able to use you.

We are trying to keep information about this game limited to the people involved in the project but we are extremity organized and have a decent sized team working on this project. So, if you are at all interested then shoot me a PM and I'll give you more info.

This clue might give it away. The actor with his back turned in the image is James Garner.

If you guys still haven't figured it out by the time I get home from work then I'll upload another screen shot.

I would pretty much have to echo everything Ghost said. In addition, the shadows in the lower right of the face seem forced. The way you have those shadows implies that his head is a perfectly smooth football shape. You may want to consider working with those a little more.

Keep us updated I'm anxious to see the progress.

Although shouldn't James T. be snogging a random female alien (surprisingly human-looking alien)?   Like in... well, every episode of TOS.  8)

What do you think he's looking at? Lol.

*sigh* go ahead and add me to the list of people who clicked the refresh button 20 times per hour for the past few days. I sure hope we get to enjoy the boards a little while before they decide to go down again.

Maybe we should have a backup forum we can all temporarily retreat to if such an unfortunate event should occur?

I'm pretty sure there were issues with having alpha channel GUI button images.
Try setting an alpha channel sprite as GUI background image, too.

Also, just to be sure, your game is set to 32bit, right?

Yes, it's 32 bit. I'm not sure why you want me to set an alpha channel sprite as the GUI background image. The background for the GUI (where the text will overlay) needs no transparency.  The borders are what need the transparency. And they get transparency. But the semi-transparent pixels (the drop shadow around the borders) appears as solid black when the game is tested.

General Discussion / Once again, I'm back!!!

There seems to be a theme here. Since 2007, i've been dropping in and out of these wonderful little forums. It really is my home away from home.  I love working with the people here! Last you saw me, I was working on a Star Trek fan game. Well, the project members and I had to break from that due to several personal issues in each of our lives.  Well, we've gotten back together and have decided to re-attack Star Trek. This time a different game ... but one that will be much better and more exciting than the last demo we put out.

There seems to be many new "faces" since the last time I was here. Just saying "hello" to everyone new and "I've missed you" to all my old friends!

I've created a custom text window GUI and I've set it up so that the borders of the box have a drop shadow. (that is, when you see the box in game, there is a drop shadow around the edges of the box)

However, i get the solid black border thing going on when I test.  It's as if the text window GUI can't recognize the semi-transparent shadow.

Can this be fixed?

Adjust the text box width to the width of the font you're using, multiplied by how many characters you want, but it depends whether your font has monospaced digits. 123456 all look the same to me, so it saves some coding if it does work.

I tried that but the problem is the font i want to use ISNT monospaced.  So in the text box you can type 100 (andno more) but you could also type 1111.  I want there to be a 3 digit maximum characters allowed.  So being able to type 1111 isn't good. (while its improbable the player will do that and probably not a big deal - i still would like to account for it if possible.)

EDIT:

Actually i believe i have gathered all the information i need from this thread.  Thanks everyone.  You guys helped me and taught me some things.
