I'm sorry if I upset anybody by bringing up more serious points about what some people put in their games.

Not at all, but the use of "serious" issues for me depends very much on the overall mood of the game.
For example, I thought some of the stuff, especially the racism issues, in "Frank the Farmhand" was a bit strong for my tastes. Fitting for a serious dark game, certainly, but a bit out of place in this one.
Especially
Spoiler
Ben being the constant victim of racist hatred, even going so far as to have his life threatened, didn't mesh well with the main character playing the cruel indigestion joke on him.

However, some hint indicate get fudge from good sink but I see none.

I'm pretty sure that wasn't in the version I played. At least, if I missed it, it's not necessary to complete the game.
Anyone?

Also some hints in this thread mention something lure, knife.

My question: where can I get the knife? I presume I need from man near prof. apartment but unsure how to get it from him

Question 2: I know I need lure from merchand from outsite store but it seems I need money. So where can I get money or can to get lure?

Spoiler
Those two questions are connected: Talk to the kid with the knife about what a badass gangster he is. Then later talk to the woman who sells the lures and she'll tell you about her nice well-behaved son. Turns out her son is the kid with the knife. Tell her about the kid, and both your problems should be solved.

I'm stuck with trying to get the ski.
Any suggestions on how to do it?

Spoiler

I don't have the game here anymore, so this might be remembered wrong:
The KKK member in the park might be better disposed to you after you gave him the weenies, or maybe you'll just have to ask him twice for the ski. Something along those lines, anyway.

You're not giving away anything with your game people could buy from PAWS otherwise. YOU made the game. YOU drew characters and did all the crap.

Nevertheless, they own the RIGHTS to the character.
Jim Davis did the groundwork years ago, without which this game wouldn't exist.

Quote
Like, when I get a child and want to name him "Garfield" then what? Have to pay to them for using that name? Stupid.

You don't, since Garfield is a name that was around before the fat cat, including Leon Garfield the writer and James Garfield the US president.

Quote
What does logic say?

Unfortunately, logic and law are not always compatible...

Quote
-> I don't think PAWS has "selling rights for amateur games" in their working license.

But they do have "selling rights for computer games". There have been several commercial Garfield computer games to date. The sad fact that they all suck balls doesn't change that.

Quote
-> So you haven't taken anything from them and you're not selling anything related to them. It's a freeware game, after all and they don't have right to sell it too. It's yours.
-> so you also haven't made any material damage to them.
-> and any other kind of damage is about impossible to prove

It's not about causing the company material damage. Actually it is, because people who want to use the Garfield likeness have to pay PAWS, Inc. to use it. Whether they make money with it or not is their problem.
When someone comes along, takes the Garfield likeness without paying and makes money with it, the company potentially loses money. And how can they be sure Kairus doesn't make money from his game?

Quote
QuoteAll of a sudden, people start associating PAWS with that offensive material. Even though there is a disclaimer, it's already too late. The word is already out there.
This is stupid. I could write "garfield sucks balls!!!" onto wall on largest street and pee on it. Police would only punish me under paragraph of vandalism. This is democracy, right? Right for opinion and everything. If making games would be easier and not based on love making them, hategames could be as popular as fangames.

Not quite the same. First of all, graffiti is obviously not an established form of publishing. Computer games are, more or less.
Secondly, writing "Garfield sucks balls" is free speech. Mass-publishing images of Garfield actually sucking balls might be considered harmful to the company, even if you do add small print that you're not associated with PAWS, because people tend to look at the image and forget about the small print. No matter how large it is written (see Kairus' game).
For example, there are several instances of Garfield saying "god damn" in the game. Potentially people could be highly offended by this and I doubt PAWS would ever authorize such an act in their own material.

QuoteI suggest to research every bit of law around that case
Definitely, I'd love to be proven wrong.
Quote
and maybe you could even make some money from a that game.
No, no, no!
QuoteIf they really are upset enough to sue you, that is.
Oh, you mean from winning a lawsuit against them. Forget it. Their lawyers likely earn more than the whole bunch of us put together.

Please don't think I'm taking the side of PAWS and their lawyers here, I'm just trying to play devil's advocate, as it were, and show the other viewpoint.
I'd love it if the company would just say "a little fan production won't hurt us", and if they had actually taken a look at the game, they probably would, but they are busy guys (what with the shitty movie coming up and all) and very likely get dozens of requests like these per week, so they prefer to play it safe and ban all fan productions from the start.

I wish it were different. If Kairus hadn't informed them, chances are they never would've bothered. I doubt they employ people to surf the web to look for games that infringe their copyrights.
I myself have written a text adventure based on "The Sandman", a comic book by DC/Vertigo Comics on my old Amstrad CPC a few years ago (http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Alley/1842/amsgames.html), it's been up on my website for years and nobody from DC's law department has ever bothered me about it. I may yet remake it for AGS some day. If that day ever comes, I sure as hell won't tell DC Comics about it.

...actually, I think were very heroic. We, simple, creative individuals, fight for entire dead games genre, and against big companies.

Actually, we're not. We're not fighting "against" anyone. I'm not sure we're even meant to be fighting at all. The big companies aren't even noticing us most of the time. And that's a good thing.

Sure, by catering to a very select market and to a "dead genre" as you put it, we're not very noticeable, and sometimes it sucks not being in the spotlight and working unseen and unappreciated by the masses. But sometimes it's a blessing as well: What they don't see, they don't sue.

Greek letters, Norse runes, Egyptian hieroglyphics, Babylonic cuneiform, Celtic Ogham, Sindarin, and that alphabet I made up with my brother when I was five.

Oh, and I need it by tomorrow.

Edit
Sorry, I'll shut up now... let the thread return to topic.

That's excellent. I realized the jaw doesn't have to move (it's drawn in a cartoony style, so complaining about it is equally useless as complaining about the relative size of the eyes), but when closed, the mouth has to be centered in relation to its "open" animation.

Completed Game Announcements / Re:Dante's Day

Jesus Christ, talk about a harsh ending...

Other than that, excellent writing (I enjoy it when the puns are piled on so thick that they hurt) and nice sound effects (ching ching ching, heheh).

As usual, a few niggles:
- The cat's tail is labeled "Hotspot 2"
- It's a bit annoying to have to figure out the one flower to pick. For the longest time I thought I was going the wrong way about picking them (like maybe I needed bait or something).
- At the very beginning, Dante is standing up before his sleeping animation is shown. Perhaps you could fix that by setting the character view and animation in the "before fade-in" part of the room.

That said, I really enjoyed it and hope to see more games from you...

Oh, and I want Klingon letters too. You cannot truly appreciate Mom's Quest until you've played it in the original Klingon.

I suppose you already know about them, but that should cover the rest of the Scandinavian special characters.

Is the "thorn" character still in use in some Scandinavian languages? I remember something to the effect when I did medieval studies at uni...

EDIT: Somehow I missed it, but all I said was covered in the first post. For some reason I skipped over the last three lines by Strazer. Stupid me. :-[

*applauds*

Very very good. Borrowed elements, sure, but it feels much more like a homage than a rip-off. I loved the crappy pirate jokes ("rated arrrr", heh). Nice puzzles, too.
And I like the simple art style a lot, it suits the cartoony characters. Good choice of music. Great writing ("It's Japanese"). More please!

That said, a few minor niggles and errors:
- The sideways walk cycle looks wrong. I'm sure the animation experts can tell you more about that than me.
- At the very end, your icon says "resart" instead of "restart".
- When you look at the package, it says it's for Jack Tar. It should be for John Waters.

Other than that, wow. I'd very much like to see a sequel.

I'll have to agree with Opo Terser, at the moment the movement is upwards into the structure of the face. However, your jaw is hinged, and when you speak, that's the part that moves the most. So the movement should be downward rather than up.

QuoteHe was in er... Jedi Knight, I think. One of the Star Wars third-person fighter/shooter games.

His debut was in Dark Forces, then he appeared in Jedi Knight (aka Dark Forces 2) and its sequels (up to the recent Jedi Academy, in which he appears as an NPC).

QuoteYes, it is supposed to be a police scooter that police people drive....hmm....

Depends on where you're setting your game, really.
American police cars usually are patterned in black and white, British ones used to be black (I think) but now are mostly white (I think) and German ones are green and white, for example.
Of course if you want it to be more general, you might go with a combination of metallic greys, a bit like the forum headlines, but darker - think Detroit Police Department in RoboCop. It might also be a good idea to make the colour scheme match the uniforms of the cops you're using in your game.

Or, to be on the safe side, write "Police" somewhere on the scooter in large friendly letters. ;)

At any rate, you might want to stay away from "warm" colours like red or purple. (Although, come to think of it, a glaring traffic light orange might work. Then again, it might not, depending how your cops look).
