Imprisonment can mean so many things.. Secluded from civilization in a jagged mountain range, Corben the Hermit is trapped within his own agoraphobia. A fan of ravens, he discovered that rock formations can play games with your mind.

Great, some competition with two very good backgrounds. Gameboy I'm always impressed by your simple and yet extremely beautiful style.

Let me try too :)

I haven't placed it but it's someplace hot.
Quite a few rushed areas lacking detail, I might correct them if I find the time. The boardsign in the left has a sketch in it so if anyone can make it out with all the texture, let me know what you think it is :P There is a special treat for you if you zoom in inside the nest.

Congrats to all the competitors, all the sprites were great.
And a well earned prize by Blinky, it is an amazing sprite and with just 16 colors.  :)

Sorry, but that's not Bill Tiller's gradient style. Take a look to his work, and you'll see that his gradient is not just a succession of horizontal colours going from darker to brighter. It's better a succession of bright blobs (representing the light sources; The moon, the milky way, bright stars, and clowds or land reflexing the light of the moon) over a plain (or very slightly gradiented) background.
Not a great example, but will work...

Thanx for the crits yet again, but like I said, this is just a general style testing, I didn't add much detail to the pics. I'll sharpen them as soon as I get home :P

Btw, Bill Tiller did use such gradients as shown in the following page :

Keep them coming, thanx for all the ideas :)

The Sky Gradient is a Bill Tiller idea so I trust his technique :P
Here's another one

STill trying styles, I brushed up a quick drawing to test a cartoony style.
Does this style look interesting? Is it worth pursuing? It's lacking heavily on details and the foreground looks extremely bare but I think it's ok for a general style C&C.

I like your style, clean coloured and well composed. The problem I see is with the shadows and highlights which gives the image a flat look. Your light source ( I suppose the el. candles in the back ) casts a shadow towards the viewer's point of view. But the character highlighting is reversed, giving the impression that there is another light source behind the viewer. So I would either change the shadows cast on the floor, or match the shadows with the character highlighting :)

I hope I'm not too late. I present to you the vampire Pantoula and his loyal bat Quirky!

Thanks for the crit, here's a desaturated version with a few additions ( boardsign, nest on the right tree ) and a bit fixed shadowing

The light source is located above the forest as a midafternoon scenery, with blocking effects from unseen trees higher in the field of vision (Hence the mild shadowing)

You've chosen a pretty hard game-style, Sierra games have a weird realistic feel to the rendering -- and still, you made an amazing job :)

Here's some help to the cliff using a pale antialiased brown brush with 3 variant color tones :

Blur & highlighting fixed as much as I could with the latest saved file I had.
As for the deliberate position of the bushes, I can't do much right now :P
.png really makes the image too dark :/

Thanx, I see what you mean. I blurred the outlines of the trees as a final step, so I still have the sharp version. The highlights looked correct in the psd version but the transformation toned the image down and made the difference more apparent.

I've been flooding the lounge with entries but I'm trying different styles :P
Here is a daytime forest, using a somewhat realistic composition with autumn tones.
