General Discussion / Re: about blogger
Mon 28/05/2007 04:07:17
How about people stop bloging.

99% of blogs seem to be useless crap about what some kid did on that day. Most are exagerated if not complete bullshit. Im sick of search engines giving me peoples useless blogs as a result when thats the last thing i want :/

As Maddox once said
Quote....another phrase that can be used for "blog" called: comment-log or CLOG for short. What users do is labor over documenting their inconsequential lives, trivializing man's greatest invention, the microprocessor, until the Internet is so CLOGGED that commerce comes to a screeching halt. Anyone contributing to the congestion would be known as a CLOGGER.

Works fine for me with Photoshop7

Ctrl Q does make it instant quit, but it opens fine still. I dunno what the problem there is. Just try to reinstall. Pergaps the installation is damaged. Its possible (however unlikely) that photoshop was doing somthing with its own files as you made it quit and never finished. Seems very unlikely tho...

theres plenty of ways for saving streaming audio. For a start you can just open any old sound recorder and record that way, no different than someone using a tape recorder to record the radio.

Radiostations TV channles ect all pay exorbadent licencing fees to play what they do.
I dont know for sure that 90% of these internet radio stations are illegal, however the fact they play commercial music says it all. The fees are more than any kid running a radio station from his PC can possible afford and most internet radio is just that, a group of kiddies. Its starting to change, alot of commercial netowrks are picking up on internet radio these days and broadcasting their own stations, so id say its not as rife as it used to be.

As for you tube, you can blame the users all you want, but the point is that most of the Videos on there use somthign commercial, anything from the music to chopped up video clips dedicated to bands, actors, concert footage or even people playing covers of other peoples music. Its all illegal and should be removed. From what i can tell the only vids that get removed are the full TV show episodes.

Im not going to pretend i give a shit about people breaching copyrights or pirating music, software ect. (Infact i have recieved several Cease and Desist letters from iEntertainment in the past) But what i care about is how they crack down on poor minoritys who cant defend themselves and let the real "criminals" get away with it. If they were serious about enforcing this stuff, then they should take down the big guys as an example.

Then again, i dont think anyone wants to make the same mistake Metallica made taking on Napster. Yes they won, but it turned millions of people against them and just spawned many new file sharing networks thus increasing the problem. If they close down the small time guy, they piss off minimal people and aviod a mass of bad publicity.

90% of Internet radio stations are playing the music ilegally. I understand totally why they want to impose fees for the songs that are played.

Its amazing how popular sites like you tube blatantly get away with breaching copyrights yet small time sites, stations and developers get shutdown or treated poorly  :-\

They arent even GnR anymore. The should be called "Old Man Axl and his band of Loosers!"
Not that hes that old, but he seems worse off than Jagger or Richards :O

To tell you the truth, the band members are actually ok. Its just Axl who needs to go.

Are you sure its a hardware error?

A damaged Windows installation can also cause this sort of behaviour.

NO.. You cant format throught windows. The drive is in use and will not let you do it. You need to boot from a CD or floppy. MiniPE is a good preinstall environment you can use for all sorts of diagnostics. You can pretty much run your PC from the CD alone, its kinda like a linux Live CD

Sounds like you get to the stage where it says "Boot from CD, Press any key" you press any key and it checks the CD and boots of the HDD insted.

Well then thing id make certian of is that that is definetly a bootable CD you are trying to boot off. Try it in another PC. Unfortunalty some bootable CDs work just fine in some drives and not in others. Also, the CD may be damaged or just dirty.

If it isnt a bootable CD. Head over to the MS website and grab the 6 boot floopys for XP installation and start your installation by booting off that.

If it IS a bootable CD, the same thing might work, or you can download a dodgy copy of XP from somewhere and use your serial number with it. MS may also send you a CD under certian circumstances, check their site for details.

For the guys suggesting Linux, ok.. Linux is a not bad alternitive to windows, but if you have never used it before it can be more trouble than its worth. If you want to install Linux, use "Live" CDs or find an online installation guide that shows you how to install Linux and XP together and start learning about Linux while you use windows. Linux can be a real pain in the ass with the smallest of things. I remember trying 6 different mouses with Ubuntu untill one finally worked :S
Theres a not bad distro for people who have never seen anything other than windows called LinuxXP. Tho i think they have the balls to attpempt to charge for it, but you can use if for 100 days without any nag screens. 100 days is plenty of time to learn ya way around linux.
Really i suggest a second PC for getting to know Linux, unless you have no alternative.

Even so, he cant install linux if he cant boot from the CD, so it wouldnt solve his current problem. Therefor.. make sure that thing is bootable and if it is, try another bootable CD in that PC see if it works. Then get back to us :P

General Discussion / Re: StarCraft 2
Mon 21/05/2007 08:07:12
aww man, dont get me started on Command and Conquer. The first one was excellent. Red Alert was ok, but then they started getting fancy, adding too many fancy unnessecary units and buildings into the game thus ruining it. CnC3 is not bad, but thats probly just because i hadnt played any RTS in a few years.

Dune2 OMG i played that game for so long. I loved the game so much then when my 386 died i started playing it on an 8mhz PC XT (IMB PS/1) with 640 ram.
It took the Trike 43min to cross from one end of the final map to the other :O
I also played alot of Dune 1 at that stage. Had the best music of any PC game in its time IMO. I still download the tracks to this day, tho Sonic1 (MegaDrive) is still the king of Old School game music for me!

And yes, he means the original Dune2. The other one was called Dune2000 wich used the CnC engine.

World of Starcraft lol.. I hope not. I love MMORPGs, however most of the new ones are terrible. WoW being one of the worst. Its the kind of game that requires 0 skill and you can be "good at it" only if you have no life and have time to grind through the lvling up.
Somthing that itself is pathetically easy since all you really have to do i click on the enemy and then watch the fight. Helbreath is the best MMORPG ever made IMO.. then again, im a lil bias on that 1.

Games these days rarely live up to the quality of the old ones... ESPECIALLY EA games. They release them way too early because the internet allows them to easily release patches as the consumers find the bugs. EA is particually slack on this.

I always Loved Warcraft and Warcraft 2. Starcraft however was a terrible game. I never understood why it was so popular. Hopefully they do a better job of this one and dont take it down the same path they took the Warcraft series.

Maybe hes using the zoom feature. I notice that on larger scrolling rooms with the zoom at around 70% the scrolling gets a littel jerky. Experimenting a little with the animation speed and character speed helps a little.

General Discussion / Re: MP3 Quality?

For a start he need to tune that thing. Not sure what that "horn" sound is possibly a bad guitar note. Keyboard should be louder too IMO.

Sounds ok tho, you guys got potential.

Is you windows updated?

Usually when checking out any "illegal" sites (yes rom sites are illegal) you run the risk of coming across popups like that. Generally if your windows is up to date, you are relitivly safe, but i still get things coming through now and then. Just last month i had a small problem with a recuring popup. Windows update fixed it in the end.

Just be glad you were only redirected to some dodgy site and didnt have some malicious software installed. For the record, i really doubt the FBI would be on the way over a 1 min look at some popup.

General Discussion / Re: MP3 Quality?
Sat 05/05/2007 04:58:37
When i was about 20 we made a small band, we all sucked, but it was for fun. During this short lived band, we all signed up for a sound enginering course. It was only basic, but we did it just to learn a lil about how to record at home. Im no expert, but i may be abel to offer some advice.

1, Never record the initial tracks as MP3. Record as WAV.
2, Quality wise, Standard PC mics dont cut it, especially for BASS. They are ok for more higher pithced noises, but for BASS you really need a mic with a larger diaphram. You should always try and use several Mics, especially for Drum tracks. A good mixer wouldnt hurt either.
3, Yes, the Mic placement makes a huge difference. It should be relitivly close to the sound source, to aviod spill from other instruments being played at the same time, but obviously not too close. Theres some rule about placing them 1 Wavelength away from the sound source, but i think its best to experiment here. Move them around and see whats best.
4, The Location of your instruments in a room as well as the shape of the room can help alot. Rooms that are just a square box tend to have 2 problems. The first is echo, and the second is caused by echo and its cancelation. Wich is when the sound is basically reflected back at itself and hits the oncoming sound wave, canceling it out. Hope that makes sense.
Cheepest way i can think of to help with this sort of thing is hanging thick sheets and blankets around the room.

An MP3 will never sound as good as a CD or recorded WAV, even at its highest sampling rate it still compresses the high and low peaks removing a degree of "quality" but generally you should be abel to get them to sound relitivly good. Most people with your average PC speakers wouldnt be abel to tell much difference.

Looks interesting. Ill be giving it a shot :)

Interesting tho the only one i could consider a game is "will it float" the others are just automated exce[t the throwing game, tho i hardly call clicking on a pencil or paper and hearing a noise a game.

Very Original :P

Backup everything you deem important to DVD or whatever method of backup you have.

First id use System restore to go back to a date when you KNOW it was working.

If the PC seems to work normally, try is to boot of the windows CD and attempt to repair your installation.

Doesnt work? Boot off the windows CD and install a new version Over the top of the old one (Same Folder) tho the one time ive tried this with XP Home, it refused to use the same folder, but it works with XP Pro.

Still running like crap? Screwit, Format the HDD do a fresh install.
Tho if i were you, id download the latest XP ISO that includes all the updates to may07 and install off that. I was having major trouble when id attempt to update from windowsupdate, i would get infected before it could finish downloading.

P.S. Buy a Mac

just kidding.. anyone with 1/2 a brain knows Macs are now just PCs with a different OS :D
