I enjoyed it a lot. Beautful graphics and a good story line. The riddles were interesting but not interrupting the flow of events, well done.

Thanks! It was a very hard work to find the balance. Two years and a half studying the problem of adventure games before starting to make my own has paid, I hope  :-D It was especially challenging because the game is not a big adventure "save the world" type, it's actually rather domestic and personal in its approach, so the puzzles had to make sense while nurturing the feelings you have for the character. Pretty much, each puzzle had to express an act of love. It was hard to come up with!

This is a teamwork that has really paid off. The art is beautiful and atmospheric, and I really like some of the sci-fi ideas, making the world believable and special. I especially liked the stuff about gravity, that the colonies are national and not simply "Earth" colonies, and the solution to the day cycle problem. I hope to see more stories from this universe.  (nod)

Thanks a lot, Lorenzo and I really had a great time working together, to the extent that we opted to do more games, including a much longer one :) But several people told us they liked the universe so I may make other short stories like this one.
Part of the reason why the planets are colonized by specific countries come from the desire to give a voice to other cultures. Sci-fi always have "Earth" colonies but "Earth" equals Anglo-American culture most of the time, so here we wanted to express the culture and lifestyle of overlooked countries. If I do more games in this universe I will try to do it as well for even more cultures, trying to see the diversity of our world spreading accross an equally diverse galaxy would be rewarding!
As per the day and night cycle, it really came as I was reading about the real Trappist-1 planets, it was just fascinating the idea of living on a tidally locked world, I had to find a way to exploit that!

By the way, if you want your game translated into German (Germany), I can help out. But I won't be able to start translating before June 1st.

That would be awesome! My German is not good enough to translate the whole game. Just message me when you have free time and I'll give you the file for it, there is no hurry! Ironically, stats on Gamejolt show me that Germany is so far the country with the most downloads.

Someone posted an interesting graph showing what game engines were used for entries in the jam:

AGS is the second-most used engine, at almost 20% of all games. Second only to Unity which towers at 25% and if you add the Unity/Powerquest you reach almost 42% of all games made with an Unity engine of sorts.

After AGS the only ones coming close are Godot and Visionaire at 6.5% each.

This kinda shows how AGS is still popular nowadays amongst indie devs.

I've also played Honza's game. There's not much to do yet, unfortunately, but it's a nice teaser for the full game. And that parallax (I think?) effect with the backgrounds, wow! It gives a lot of depth to the scenes. The complete game should be a lot of fun!

I played it too and it was a short but great experience! The art and universe are different from what we often see, so that's a big bonus! It has lots of personality!
It has a bit too much unhandled actions but I still look forward for the longer version!

The woman you love is a refugee from a destroyed planet. She is lonely and desperate and cannot let go of her lost home. Only you can help her grow out of the trauma and enter a new life with you on Trappist-1.

Will you let Zheny walk away?
On Trappist-1, a planet of perpetual daylight, your countrymen desperately try to re-create the art de vivre of their country. Zheny is a refugee from a devastated planet. If you do not help her, she will leave and face dangers beyond imagination.

"Breakfast on Trappist-1" is a story of love and identity on a foreign planet where cultures intertwine.

Made in two weeks for Adventure Jam 2021.
We have also been offered to enter it for MAGS May 2021 and leave it to the voters to decide if it fits.

The game features:
- An emotional story of love and cross-cultural experience.
- A real exoplanet: the story imagines what would happen in one of the most promising candidates for human exploration, see here.
- A lot of scripted actions: there are as little unhandled actions as possible, and many of your attempts at interacting with hotspots or giving items to characters will result in more storytelling.
- Lorenzo's fantastic original art.

The can be downloaded on its GameJolt page or on its itch.io page.
You can also access it via its AGS database page.

FormosaFalanster: writing, coding.

Lorenzo Boni: art, additional coding.

That makes 6 games from AGS out of 29!

Assuming all 29 are still competing. I keep hearing on gamejolt that some may not finish. Honestly I hope they do, the more the merrier.

Apparently there are 31 games in the jam. With fernewelten's and mine, that makes at least two AGS games. I am not sure yet if there are others.

Some great looking titles there.

I still don’t get why they limited voting to only people who entered. I’m sure a lot more people would bother playing the games if they were able to vote.

I wondered the same thing. We had already several people telling us they would have been voting if they could. It doesn't make much sense but sadly we can only follow their rules   :-\

So I've been having breakfast on Trappist-1...

It's a great game. I just wonder what's growing. Is it the colonial expansion that's sort of in the background of the story you think of?

It's Zheny growing out of her trauma and past life into a new one.

@FormosaFalanster, don't forget to add your game to ags games database: https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/add/v

I would gladly do but is it okay for a MAGS game to be in the database before the end of the month? I thought we had to wait but maybe I'm wrong, I never did a MAGS before.

Our game is ready! You can download it there: https://gamejolt.com/games/trappist1/615005

Alright, let me present you with our entry:

Breakfast on Trappist-1

The girl you love is a refugee from a destroyed planet. She is lonely and desperate and cannot let go of her lost home. If you do not stop her, she will leave and face mortal dangers in her vain quest to clutch to her past. Only you can help her grow out of the trauma and enter a new life with you on Trappist-1.

With a story by myself and art by Lorenzo, the game features:
-11 rooms
-6 non-playable characters to talk with
-A first-person system
-A real exoplanet, check it out!
-Lorenzo's art
-My cross-cultural Eastern-Western stories

We are working very well together and doing good progress. Out of fairness I let you know we initiated this progress for the Adventure Jam 2021 but since we were told it was okay to put it on MAGS as well and it felt in like with the theme we are putting it here. Also, my blog will probably include some insights at how we are dealing with the project together!

You can see already some art:

A little update: development is doing very well! Just a few days in we have been able to create a lot of things. Also, more importantly, we find that we work very well together and have a very good working routine. I actually wrote about it in the GameJolt page about the game, you can read here because I will put more updates as we go, it's my first game jam so I'm excited to share about it: https://gamejolt.com/games/trappist1/615005 and because the size of the posts are very limited, I put more details on my blog: https://formosafalanster.wordpress.com/2021/05/11/so-i-entered-a-game-jam/

What's interesting is that Lorenzo and I first contacted each other to express mutual appreciation at each other's games, and then our conversation grew into working together. So I guess we can thank AGS for introducing us!

Why not enter AdventureJam and MAGS at the same time (https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/forums/index.php?topic=59077.0)

The theme for MAGS this month is "Growing". If you can make your AdvJam game about growing (and make it in AGS) then there's nothing to stop you from entering it into MAGS too.

That's actually what I did in 2015. The theme for MAGS was "sleeping", so I made Power Nap and entered it into both.

You know, it's actually not a bad idea... At first I thought maybe it was not honest to enter it but since you're inviting us I guess it's appropriate. And come to think of it, it is sort of about growing... I don't know, maybe it's a stretch, but then again the theme of "growing" has a very wide scope. Tell you what, I will put the game for MAGS, and if you guys feel it was not fitting in the theme you can just vote against the game!

Lorenzo and myself are entering it :) I have done the story and will do the coding, he does all the art. That's very exciting!

I paused my current project for it. If our planning is correct we will have the game ready by the end of the jam.

Hello - you can use Vietnamese!

But you need to change the font.

It is the same with every language that has diacritics (the special letters). You need to change the font, with a font that includes these letters.

If you look for free fonts online, you can find many with all the diacritics you need.

Then you just import it in AGS.

So, Vietnamese is easy to do. It's harder to do Chinese characters  :-D

Okay, so if I understand well, it's possible but it's not straightforward!

Thanks guys, this is all I needed to know for the moment. The game is near completion so I was anticipating if it is even feasible at all. It seems it's worth translating it and then with a bit of work it can be put into the game.

So I may dedicate some time after the game is out to look into this other thread and the module, and as you said maybe work to improve it (which translates as: brace yourself for questions in the discord, but I promise I'll do my best alone).

I thought about pre-rendering the text in graphics and putting it in the game after. It's difficult especially with traditional Chinese because the characters are very intricate and that does not look good. In my previous game I tried to put an element of background with chinese writing on it and damn that was a headache.

But luckily, in this game I use custom GUIs all the time so it should help.

Anyway thanks, I'll keep you posted about the progress!

Falcon City has Hakka-Chinese listed as one of the available languages.

Hakka uses Chinese characters like Mandarin so that could work. It's just a matter of, how does the fonts work, maybe?

The next game I do, I want to translate it in several languages, including Chinese (traditionnal characters). How would that work though? Is that supported? Anyone has experience with writings that are not in latin alphabet?
