OpenQuest was me, about twelve years ago! I'm amazed people have kept it alive so long. Surely someone else can do something better that's written in the current version?

I hope you're also planning to port this to the Spectrum and Acorn Electron.

Ooooh I like that linked list approach. Thanks a bunch.

A simple question - is it possible to run a while loop over a subset of characters named cChar1, cChar2 etc. that do not have consecutive id numbers? Or am I stuck with using a custom property or similar and having to check against that whilst iterating over the whole set?

Thanks

The author of the "unwieldy way" was me, and yes it is. There's no need to do it all manually like that but it got the job done at the time!

No description necessary, fool.

Didn't know about that limit. Not to worry, I have uploaded an amended version.

The game documented here has been completed.

I hope some newbies find this game vaguely useful in their endeavours. Everyone else can pretty much ignore!

The graphics are really just filler, I considered using roger at one point. If you're planning to make a game starring blue teddy bear aliens then be my guest.

Right now 2.72, eventually both

You gotta love a bit of MS Paint.

OpenQuest

I can't remember how long I've been waiting for demoquest to become available. In the end I decided to cut out the middle man and make my own open source demo game. And this it. It's a very small game but it is complete in that it contains everthing a full game would, albeit scaled down to two rooms. I can't promise it covers everything you can do with AGS but it does implement most of the classic adventuring paradigms; using inventory, meeting characters, unlocking doors, etc. etc. It won't interest the AGS veterans but those looking to get down and dirty with some basic scripting might find it useful to tinker about with.

This started out with an empty template and no modules - I didn't want to seem to be endorsing third party add ons!

Story: Tenuous at best, aliens infiltrate earth and find a blue cup

Screenshots:

Progress:
It is about 90% complete. Some menus, interactions and music to come, plus a lot more code commenting. I expect to finish in the next couple of weeks.

I've been playing this one and I find it to be most excellent. I don't really understand the story much but it's very atmospheric with perfect use of sound effects. I'd love to go through and correct all those spelling and grammatical errors to make it even better.

The problem with game development, as I see it, is that it's such a time consuming process

I think this is particularly pertinent in the adventure genre where you generally have to script every possible event and outcome. You don't often have interesting aspects of gameplay that simply emerge like you would perhaps in a fps or strategy game. The ratio of production time to actual playing time is extremely high and can be quite offputting (as I found in the a-team game when I spent three days on a room that you simply pass through without stopping).

I commend your commitment!

I like the irony that he's a "faceless" employee.

Nice, very nice. The tools you're planning to release to us mortals sound like the nuts.

Thought it was a solid game, other than the dodgy walking animation! Next time I want to see his mum.

My issue with the concept of heaven is overcrowding. If everything that's ever died that acted with reasonable conscience is there then its gonna be a nightmare. The place will be overrun with insects. Upon death, I want my corpse to be stuffed and then featured as an extra on The Bill.
