Hmm... then "AGS birthday" would be 18 September 1999... guess it's when AGS v2 was released (when AC became AGS) - Is that it?

Right... why don't you read changes.txt in the docs folder?

(AC) VERSION 1.00, FEBRUARY 1997 (exact date unknown)
(AGS) VERSION 2.00, September 1999 (exact date not marked either...)

EDIT: Right-o, teh announcement of AC2 was on 18th September:

And the real birthday of AC dated back to... read for yourselves:

Hmmm, you may want to try finding V2.55 and open the files with it, I think someone might still having it on webspace (may ask for people managing mirror downloads, eg. AGA, as CJ's absent for the time being).

You may also try opening it with the newest version (V2.6SP1) and see if it's okay (sometimes, due to fixes/feature additions in newer versions, you may need to modify the game a little to work exactly teh same as before).

If the files were corrupted (because of the virus or whatever), I think we cant offer much help here, you may need to wait for CJ to return.

But anyway, BACKUP the game files before trying any of the suggestion!

Hmmm I'm not quite sure if I gat your meaning. But did you try putting a Wait(1); line between that GUIoff(... and DisplaySpeech(... and see what happens?
#6807
I suppose you're putting these Display... functions in the game_start() function, this is not allowed, as when this function is executed, no room data was loaded yet, so it is the very start of the execution of the game, and you cant do much apart from setting up some parameters, disabling/enabling some GUIs and the like there.

To have a message displayed at "game start", just throw that DisplayWhatever line in the "Player enters room after fade-in" function of that first room script.

Incense? You never need to get that.
But somethings there that is, if you're at that point.

General Discussion / Re:question about rpg's

Whether a game is really 3D or not depends on how you view it.

For example here's my classification:

Wolf 3D, Doom and Duke Nukem 3D:
Game system/Gameplay : 2D, as you actually explore on a 2D map, even if there seems to be stairs and height factors, there's actually only one storey at one time at the position you're standing on, because if you can play the game on the overhead map screen you're actually playing the game with the same level of freedom of movement (if you know what I mean), though you can "jump" and "fly" in DK3D, it's of no REAL addition to the authetic freedom in the game (well I guess someone considered DK3D a 2.5D game, I won't care).
Graphics: represented as 3D

For Descent and whatever-astonishing-looking-but-completely-crap-modern-games:
Gameplay and graphics are both 3D.

An example of different people having different classification was back in the 80's and early 90's there're actually people calling Sierra and Lucasfilm styled adventure games 3D action adventure games, they're "3D" because you have to manuveur a character on a "3D" scene (which seemed to have depth, as you can move the character closer (down) to and farther (up) from the screen, and there're bg elements, objects, characters, etc. which will or will not cover up each other depends on their relative depths (walkbehinds, baselines, etc. ;) )), this is different from ordinary text or static scene (though the scenes can be drawn in "3D", still) adventure games and you do "actions" in these games.
So according to their definition, the name 3D action adventure is completely valid, and I won't consider them wrong.

No, make it Andy Milonakis.

The day when I hacked into the computer of a man called Chris and stole legally obtained the full source codes of an adventure game creation package.

I think it has nothing to do with changing it in the middle of development. If you found these styles slow when setting them in the middle of the development, they'll certainly be slow also when you set them initially.

Screen transitions involve redrawing all the pixels on screen. What resolution and colour depth is your game in?
#6813
No, it's not with going back to the title screen I suppose. I think he wanted the change to take place next time the player executes the game.
#6814
Yay I ended up with 220, guess one of the things I missed was taking a shower (if that takes 2 points then I only missed one thing, guess now...).
#6815
Well the strange thing was that when I downloaded them from the RON site, they're just tiny ZIP files containing CHA files...

I'm not sure, maybe the "newer" versions for Amiga supports true colour, but definately not in the PC versions.
#6817
Yes, one way I can thoght of is to write to some file using FileWrite(), etc. whenever the player had reached some progress.
So in the title screen it will read the generated file to check for the progress and do whatever suitable actions.
