General Discussion / I made a cartoon
Tue 17/03/2009 11:51:41

Hey,

November 2007 I started on a flash cartoon. February 2009 I re-discovered it and finished it. Too much was last minute and I wish I got the time to un-motion tween the first scenes, but overall it turned out fine for a few laughs I think. Then I submitted it to a Norwegian short movie competition and here it is:

If you like it, why don't vote for it? Press the purple button beneath the video where it says "KLIKK HER FOR Å  STEMME" and there you go. Thanks!

Whatever Hitler.

Darn that's beautiful. Maybe a little too shaky around the collar and the belt could probably be a bit less jumpy(so it goes along with the zipper), but god damn. Very nice!

Societies were created and modelled by man and they do end, as civilizations do too, the future is uncertain but it will surely resemble something out of a James Cameron movie, as the gap between the powerful and poor enlarges with time.

You're saying there's a bigger gap between the poor and the powerful now than it was in e.g. the dark ages? Hasn't it always been there, and hasn't there always been people complaining about how it's expanding? (I agree it's bad)

Quote from: miguel on Thu 19/02/2009 22:32:22And maybe, and that just a big maybe, as I would not want that to happen, what Obama is willing to do about the American health services turning it into an "Europeanized" version might just be the end of the US as the weight of the Health Department on National budgets is, in some cases, bigger than 30%. And if you promise and give to a country such a bonus on life quality it makes it something very hard to "take back" as it would create social riots everywhere!

The American health system is terrible and if it means gradually increasing taxes to improve it I don't really see why someone would object to that with reason. Good health is actually the number one reason people are still alive!

Quote from: miguel on Thu 19/02/2009 22:32:22It's not hard to figure why Cuba has some of the most advanced medicine in the world as their government cuts down on everything else!

What's your conclusion on this? Every country that bets on the health system is doomed to be an evil communist regime?

Quote from: miguel on Thu 19/02/2009 22:32:22As for your "functional society" that never was, I guess man will have to reinvent something else.

What "else"? We've been through quite a lot the last 10 000 or so years, each one pretty much not giving a shit about the poor or disabled up until less than a hundred years ago. Social security is one of the most important services we have, and your argument of having to abolish it for "something else" is thin.
#29
Let's say you're right about that and the social welfare state "ends". What happens then? Every man for himself? The free market rule? Everyone becomes libertarians? A society that doesn't take care of those who can't take care of themselves is not a functional society.

If I was talking about Sovjet or China I'd probably use the word communism. A welfare state within a social democracy is likely the most effective and ethic system a country can have. I'm not saying it's perfect, as there's no such thing as the perfect system, but it beats both American capitalism and Chinese communism by far.

Man not another Obama thread.

Quote from: Makeout Patrol on Mon 16/02/2009 19:31:01It is true that capitalism is pretty much the most effective method we have to ensure that the necessities of life are delivered to as many people as possible.

I'll have to disagree with this: Socialism does that best, capitalism keeps up the work motivation.

Quote from: Raider on Wed 18/02/2009 19:41:16Although money does often buy happiness. Just not always.

I notice the more unfulfilled and displeased a person is, the more "crap" he or she surrounds himself with. You could say the material wealth replaces the poverty in the soul if we're gonna be pretentious about it and hell I'm gonna be just that. I'm not saying we should all live under a tree but we can certainly live without most of the stuff we pack ourself in with.

Quote from: Pumaman on Mon 16/02/2009 23:02:17I'd be grateful for getting a weeks warning rather than just being randomly hit by a bus, and would hit the bottle in style.

Yeah no kidding. I'd like to think I'd do all sorts of crazy, great stuff the last week of my life, but I'd probably just slide into a pathetic depression instead. With good reason.

Critics' Lounge / Re: First Room and Character
Tue 17/02/2009 14:03:37
While this is much better, the colors hurt my eyes. I can't focus on much but the screaming green while everything blends into yellow around it. Looking at this for more than ten minutes fullscreen would probably cause a headache. It's way too saturated.

Here's a very quick edit of how it could look:

It's a little duller than I'd like it, but it gets my point across.

As for the composition of the room, I find it odd. Why would he place a television right infront of a doorway? I'm assuming that's a kitchen to the right, so what's his fridge(?) doing in the living room? And his bed? I suggest you look at a few real-life photographs of apartments and see how they fill them up. They usually have a bunch of paintings, windows, lamps and cupboards all over the place. Check it out:

You could also do it the easy way and simply make the room smaller. Good luck.  :)

I've got it to run on XP but I think I only ran it in compability mode and got lucky. You say your game crashes right after the splash screen; have you tried ESC-ing through them and then bring up the F1-menu? (Or something along those lines)

It's a good start. I can point out some of the obvious stuff:

-The head and upper body is completely still. When you walk, you bounce a bit according to your steps.
-Your side view looks funny. Try looking at each leg individually. The front leg slides way too slow on the floor when he touches it, while the back leg spends way too much time behind the butt and then rushes a kick ahead. I'd also recommend tilting the foot a bit upwards when they're in front of him. Take a stroll around the room and notice how your feet move.
-Work a little on your hands. I know you wanted criticism on the animation but don't be afraid of drawing fingers. :)
-Your back view isn't that bad at all. A little shaky and maybe a bit too much sliding, but otherwise fine. I'd concentrate on making the upper body work with the legs.
-Again, individual leg movement: In your front view the right leg stops for two frames while the left one is constantly moving. I'd also try fixing that twitch in his arms.

You'll also find plenty of walkcycles online you could work after, but don't get too dependent on them. A tip is to make 4 extreme frames, then fill in the movements inbetween.

I've been slacking. I've only played three of the games on the list, one of them being my own. I'd feel dickish only to nominate myself and one other (didn't complete the last).

I'm gonna do a run-through for about ~20 games I've picked out that looked promising, furiously writing small notes to help me remember what was good or bad about them.
#39
Thanks. I was aiming for that first impression, so good to know. :)

I've launched a website, MYRLIK. You can check out the MCAR part if you want. I've also done a slight update by adding custom icons to the game.
