Hints & Tips / Re: Unga needs Mumba

Ah, Thanks! I thought I had tried that, but obviously not!

Finished the game now and would be interested to hear if anyone got a different ending?

Okay, doubtless this is me being stupid, but...

Spoiler
How do I get the tool from Frako? It appears I can replace it with the small stones but I need to distract him. I can make him sneeze with the Kaffla but this doesn't seem to help! What doubtless obvious thing have I missed?!

General Discussion / Re: Anyone a lawyer?

Firstly, I should say that I am not giving you formal legal advice and in any event you must and should not rely on any views or information contained in this post in any subsequent proceedings of any nature or for any other purpose.

I am quite sure you are more than sensible enough not to rely on some guy from the internet anyway(!) and will be aware that you should seek formal legal advice whenever faced with any kind of claim.

However, some general points that might be worth considering.

Now, that seems like an odd thing to do. There was no negligence and it was clearly an accident. Surely it's just a matter for the insurance and I couldn't be personally liable for the damage. If my bath fell through the ceiling they wouldn't personally bill me for thousands of pounds to fix the ceiling, they would just claim on the building's insurance.

Any thoughts?

1. Negligence or breach of duty can arise by act or omission and anyone living in a block of flats will more than likely have a duty to keep in repair and maintain installations such as the plumbing for the bathroom and, arising from this, a potential liability to compensate a third party injured by a negligent act or omission (for instance failing to keep in good repair and maintain plumbing). A contract between the owner/landlord and the management company (or similar) would likely contain more detail on any contractual duty.

2. Generally, the owner of the freehold of the building (or their agents) will have taken out buildings insurance (albeit paid for by the tenants) for the building which would more than likely cover any structural damage etc. However it does not always cover items such as damaged fittings such as ruined carpets and a landlord or owner might be liable for these. The buildings insurance policy would set out the purported areas and level of cover and provide more information.

3. If person A's flat were damaged by something arising from Person B's flat, he might well ask Person B to pay for the repair etc. (this is, of course, not the same thing as bringing formal court proceedings - i.e. suing) even on a speculative basis rather than claim on a policy to which he himself contributes and whose premiums might rise!

Person A can write to Person B asking for anything they want (within reason!) but cannot force Person B to pay anything without a court order to which, in the usual run of things, they would need to prove they were entitled.

Disclaimer: My poor programming knowledge (compared to many here) and lack of activity in the community generally really count me out of having any voice in this debate. My "2 cents" below should therefore be treated accordingly.

I think the idea of an overseer or project lead who is not too involved with the actual programming is a good idea and would make for a healthy set up going forward.

Dave is a very credible lead for this project on every front, as a household name both here and in the world of adventure games generally, and with the experience of managing projects "in the real world". The tasks of programming etc. can then be split equally between others without any problems of someone trying to force it "their way" in terms of how the code works and the general structure.

As I say, I have no vote in this, but the model of someone overseeing and managing whilst others are given parts of the technical side to deal with seems like a good way forward to me.

That is based on entirely fabricated evidence.

Nicholas Cage told me the Call of Duty series doesn't exist.

Logically that is an argument of course, unless you believe in an outside defining moral force of some kind. However, practically it is plainly wrong and utterly revolting. I suspect that if anyone you love is ever raped or murdered (and I seriously hope that will not happen) you will change that view.

I'm sorry, what's that go to do with anything? I said morals are arbitrary and subjective - that doesn't mean I don't have any of my own. They are subjective, so of course I have my own opinions as to what's moral, - I'm anti-rape and anti-murder - I'm just saying that a universal standard of morals cannot be established.

Go ask a serial killer or religious terrorist if what they're doing is wrong. They believe there is nothing wrong with what they're doing, so their morals are different to ours. The Mayans were notorious muderers (or sacrificers) and they believe what they were doing was right.

Therefore, morals are not universal. Other people's morals are different to your and my definition of morals.

Naturally some people have different moral standards, but it is only in very few cases that someone will consider murder or rape etc. perfectly fine. It is this general concensus that permits us to make laws and why moral standards can and are used as a basis for dictating behaviour by those laws.

What I was taking issue with was your idea "but do not judge another man for doing what he believes is right, however insane and absurd you may deem him to be."

Murder and rape are not acceptable and those who do them should be judged. If they were not the world would be massively unjust. You also said that you did not really believe in morals and that you have your own morals. Apart from making no sense, this shows the theoretical, or removed from real life, style of your statements.

Therefore what I said means that if someone you loved was murdered or raped I think you would change your view about judging them. In practice your current view is plainly wrong, utterly revolting and in my view purely theoretical.

Personally I don't want the world to be any more unjust than it already is.

Really? May I ask why you feel so strongly about abritrary shapes and colors meant to symbolize an arbitrarily defined piece of land?

...but you're not going to judge him for that though? ;)

Babar's balls aside...

Spoiler
I was similar to most here in being less than average on everything.

Apparently my low anger and desire to punish actually show that I have no strong moral views and do not care whether justice is done, rather than, say, patience and a desire to help people?

Overall, the description given at the end is someone I do not recognise or share much in common with and I feel that the conclusions drawn in the survey are so skewed in the direction they want that it is useless.

This really is brilliant! ;D

Certainly it may need more work re controlls etc. but seeing AGS games on my phone is FANTASTIC!

Keep going man!

Great entries everyone, I was hoping I would be pleasantly suprised by the direction people would take on this and you haven't let me down! :)

It's honestly really hard to pick a winner, or even decide second place, any of the three entries could have won.

However...

First Place: Darkdan. There is something about this that I really like, makes you smile and answers the theme in an interesting way. Simple but effective.

Second place: abstauber. Slightly surreal, I love the grasshoper/praying mantis/insect and the slightly moody looking flower!

Third place: Kastchey. Good idea, nice sprites and a nice simple visible distinction between the leaders.

Congrats Darkdan, we await the next Sprite Jam! :)

Brilliant, thanks for the entries guys! :)

As promised, there are trophies (what do you mean hastily cobbled together?) ;)

Competition is still open for the rest of the day, unless anyone wants a short extension?

Anyway with 2 entries so far, this could be the chance for the easiest trophy of your life with a last minute.com entry!
#192
Last day tomorrow if anyone was thinking about entering.

Just think, merely by submitting an entry of any kind you too could win a Sprite Jam!

Anyway, here is a picture of a Cat with a Barbie doll.

I actually quite enjoy an awkward silence.

Whilst I’m sure that really people just don’t have the time or interest in this competition, I like to imagine this thread as a large room with people sitting around me in stony silence eying me with disdain as I prattle on!

It’s kind of like when everyone in a room is observing a minute's silence for Remembrance Day and then someone walks in who has no idea what is happening and says:

“Hey guys, what’s everyone up to”.

...

“Guys?”

...

“Seriously, why is no one talking to me, you’re freaking me out”.

Anyway, still 5 days left if anyone’s interested in the competition! :)
#194
No interest or entries yet? Oh well...  :'(

I was thinking of changing the theme to "Zombie Steve Jobs" but thought it might be a little tasteless! ;)
#195
I'm really pleased to hear this is going ahead after a couple of false starts! ;)

If I can come, I think I probably will. :)

Did you make the character transparent (invisible) before using Dual's code above?

Code: ags
Jack.Transparency = 100;

Do that just before the other code.

Although if you just want him to appear 2 seconds after the car (i.e. not fade in like a ghost), make him invisible as above, then after the car stops...

Code: ags
Wait 80;
Jack.Transparency = 0;

Theme

Throughout the years many have been inspired, annoyed, bored and appalled by leaders. Whatever the emotion provoked, these are people who affect those around and under them.

There are many different levels of leaders from Prime Ministers and Presidents of countries, Bosses at work, presidents of societies, trend setters, heads of terrorist organisations, Captains of teams…

Whatever their field, they are people that other people follow either because they have to or because they want to.

However, leaders are also different in that some are charismatic, some boring, some “good”, some “evil”, some capable, some incompetent…

OK, you get the idea, they are all different!

Rules

1. Draw 2 leaders who are complete polar opposites of each other. Maybe they lead 2 opposed political parties, maybe they lead Apple and Microsoft, maybe they are just different in some of the other ways above, on whatever grounds, they lead and they are opposed!

2. No restrictions on colours or size except that the sprites must be AGS compatible.

3. Be witty, be funny, be serious, take liberties with the definition of "leader", whatever you like!

4. Feel free to name and explain your leaders!

Trophies to follow…

So get to it! :)

Hey, gotta love a win by default! Remember kids, if no one else enters even I can win!

I'll start a new Sprite Jam shortly.

Disclaimer

OK, so given my lack of artistic talent this is more drawing practice for me than a decent entry!

The Brides

Meet Chantelle, Ocean and Mercedes.

Yeah, so we like saw your ad in the paper and you said you was wealthy? Is your castle like the Disney one, 'cos Mercedes saw that at Eurodisney and apparently it was like well lame. You need lots of room anyway 'cos we will need to bring the kids.

I like pets, Ocean used to have a dog but it died. She was well gutted, how was she supposed to pay for dog food on benefits anyway? That's like against her human rights or something. Anyway my Ex Darren can get you exotic animals if you want them so let me know and I'll bring them over. It's OK, i've got stuff through customs before but I got a proper bad rash for weeks afterwards in my...

Who could turn them down? ;)

Where were you White Knights when this person was explicitely called a retard on this very same forum, for pages and pages?
Also when he repeatedly asked for beta testers? (and was told that his game was shit)
Once again it seems like sarcasm is more offensive than insults to some people. In my humble opinion, that's weird.

The difference between the two threads is as between a face to face confrontation and talking about someone behind their back. This doesn't necessarily mean one is right and one is wrong though.

QuoteErm... YES, yes it is. It is a good deed. Because I'm helping him, remember?

Ask yourself the following questions:

1. If Person A offers to help Person B when Person A is (presumably) older and more intelligent, with something Person B is openly struggling, does any form of bond of trust arise between them?

2. If Person A proceeds to reveal the difficulties which Person B has, and in which person A agreed to help with, publically, for the purposes of making fun of person B, is there a breach of any trust found at 1?

3. If there is a breach of trust as at 2 will person B feel assisted or betrayed by person A?
