Messages - Intense Degree

#21
Hey all. I have something in the works which I think will see the light of day by the end of the month...

Basically it's a rip off of I mean entirely unconnected to PanicBarn's 'Not tonight' which is itself entirely unconnected to the more famous 'Papers, Please'.  :X

Got some really basic sprites & background together and have coded about half the coding framework so far so hopefully looking good?
#22
Definitely hoping to get something in this month. I might just aim for something tiny and quick and see how it goes.
#23
Work is really piling up for me at the moment and has been this last couple of weeks so I don't think I'm going to manage anything at all this month. :(
#24
Hey, well done all and thanks to all those who played and voted. :)

#25
I don't know how time will pan out this month, but I have at least made the very beginnings of something. I'm hoping it will be in a better state than last month's, but even if not I want to try and get something out this month and keep the momentum going if possible.

Just to say I have uploaded a version with a couple of bugfixes - After the deadline. Post above updated and it's also here:https://www.mediafire.com/file/8hc5gt7auim19ah/Pride_%26_Relatives_1.1.7z/file

Thanks to Blur for finding those little 'Easter Eggs'. ;)

I should say one of them was to do with saving games. I think I have solved that problem, but if anyone has any errors saving please let me know.

EDIT: Intense Degree, one can set the GUI to be clickable, no need to make buttons or labels or anything.  ;)

Absolutely, but if I'd done that you wouldn't have had to press the 'Penthouse' button on my lift controls GUI. ;)
#28
Do you mean something like this?

If so, what resolution is your game? The default GUIs are at 320x200 resolution I think, but if you change your resolution (above the game resolution is at 640 x 400) then although the GUI will re-size to accommodate, the background images for the GUI remain as they were (drawn for 320) so it looks like the above.

Or perhaps I've misunderstood?
#29
This probably doesn't apply to your situation but I did a similar sort of thing by breaking a cutscene into two separate cutscenes and making a gui visible between them which paused the game when shown. A click on the relevant bit of the gui launched the second cutscene via rep_exec. And hid the gui obviously.

As I say it's probably no good for you for a number of reasons (not least of all triggering by any key or click) but just in case...

OK, I think I just made it inside the deadline.

The following is largely untested with half finished backgrounds probably loads of typos and missing interactions... but it is at least here!

Pride & Relatives

It is a truth universally acknowledged that, as a young lady, Jane Austen wrote Pride & Prejudice based on her own observations of polite society.

What is forgotten about this novel is how close it came to never being written at all...

Step up our forgotten Hero William [noLastNameYet]. Can he restore a young Jane's faith in humanity, including the humanity of her own siblings? Will the book Pride & Prejudice ever be written at all? This game is guaranteed to nearly answer some of those questions!

Get it here: https://www.mediafire.com/file/zp3yptu9u9whyrg/Pride_%26_Relatives.7z/file]https://www.mediafire.com/file/zp3yptu9u9whyrg/Pride_%26_Relatives.7z/file
EDIT:
https://www.mediafire.com/file/8hc5gt7auim19ah/Pride_%26_Relatives_1.1.7z/file for a bugfixed version.

OK, bedtime for me, but looking forward to playing your games Slasher & Blondbraid.

If you need someone to push your button, just say so.  (laugh)

Wow Cassie, don't know which button you pressed but it seems to have  knocked me out for a few days there! :-D Just a heavy cold/flu type thing I think rather than the the dreaded Covid.

I really don't have much, but It's not nothing so I might try and cobble something very small and partly unfinished together.
#32
Oh wow, thanks guys, and to all who voted. As others have said some great entries this month so well done everyone.

Now i'd better get thinking of a theme...
#33
I really don't think I'm going to be able to manage anything this month, but I have sort of started something so hopefully posting it might give me some motivation to try and finish something very small.

Some short reviews from me:

Skyfall - Slasher

Spoiler
Interesting idea with a happy ending. Several little mini-game style puzzles to complete with enough variety to keep things interesting. The spaceman sprite and feel of 'floating' worked really
well in the first bit I thought.

Midnight Squadron - JackPutter

Spoiler
I like the look of this game, the 'sepia' sort of colour scheme is a good fit for the subject matter and the tone was set well. An interesting story - felt like it could be part of a much bigger tale and the characters were written in a way that helped set the scene.

Over Roger - CassieBG

Spoiler
Fun little shooter - and why am I not surprised it's Battlestar Galactica themed?! ;) To be honest I'm rubbish at this sort of game so I'm probably not the best person to judge, but I enjoyed several runs through. Also, is it me or did it get harder in the newer version?

Upducted

Spoiler
A fun little couple of minutes. The little guy's walking animation makes me smile. Nice little test project. :)

The Penthouse

Spoiler
Looks like it's been drawn by a 12 year old. Character sprites are bad but walking animations are frankly embarassing. Over-reliance on system interfaces as puzzles. There is an attempt at a story but it doesn't quite hang together.

Vertigo

Spoiler
Can't stop being impressed by the implementation of the randomly drawn maze sequence. Proof positive that mazes in games aren't always bad. ;-D

One thought/observation:
Hebrew is read from right to left. When I did the slider puzzle, I naturally did it in the natural order that one would expect considering the direction of the language. When that didn't work, I had to do the puzzle over in order to complete it which did NOT brighten my day! I'm not criticizing but I do want to express that
[close]

Ah man, that was actually the plan from the word go and then I completely forgot about it! It's a solid and constructive criticism, so please feel free to make it. :)

The game provides that alternative if you notice it.

Spoiler
Yep. I wanted to code a slider puzzle, partly to check I remembered how to use structs, but they're much more fun to code than to solve in my view, so I gave an alternative for all those who just want to destroy them whenever they see them!

Got to add one more Johnny Cash entry.

Absolutely love this, works so well with Cash's distinctive and somehow emotion laden simple style.

Also...

...The Girl From Ipanema...

I must be getting older, I can remember being young(er) and thinking this is tacky, now I just think 100% tune!
#37
Hey Cassie, yep Cavefish for life, i've still got the tattoos and everything! 8-) Glad to see you're still active and productive around here!  :)

I played the first version of your game and liked it - will definitely check out the updated version soon.
#38
Hey, nice to be back Arjon! So cool to see so many familiar names still active here. :)

As for Colin, maybe it's best that he stays consigned to the bin of history. ;)
#39
@FerneWelten - nice, I had fun. with it

Unfortunately I also had a game breaking bug, sounds pretty similar to JackP

Spoiler

When I clicked in the position shown above with the mallet the game crashed and gave the following warning: Script : (room:311)[R 22] Character.Scaling: cannot set property unless ManualScaling is enabled

Is it just me, or was the hexagon maze different the second time around? I swear I took a different route... Unless there are multiple paths you can take?

I thought that too! If so how many variations are there...?

EDIT: Randomly generated - cool!

Hey Captain D, good to see you. :)

Hoping to stick around for a while now I've got a taste for it again.
