I've seen several trailers and such for other AGS games that display in game footage, and was wondering what is the best way to go about capturing quality footage of an AGS game in action? Thanks for any advice!
#102
I can see it now... you as the Honey Badger must hunt all your prey, and give zero s**ts while doing such. There are snakes stuck in trees that need to be eaten, bee nests to be dug up, and king cobras to smack the s**t outta. And all the while jackals and birds try to steal your hard earned grub, but you know what? You don't care? Why? BECAUSE YOU'RE A HONEY BADGER!!!!!

Greetings everybody! Jaffles here once again to bring you a preview of the second game in the Reon Quest series. Thanks to everyone who played Episode 1 and has supported me thus far! At the current rate of progression, I'd say expect this game to drop around September/October, but no promises! Anyway, without further ado, here is...

If you like what you see, Episode 1 is complete and playable HERE

Reon Quest Episode 2: Escape From Bully Island

Story

After the antics surrounding the Mysterious Aluminatti Society, the Principal of Reon Elementary School has had enough! With the big PTA Meeting on the horizon and his school's reputation on the line, he does what any other reasonable Principal would do: Orders Draco and his "merry band of idiots" to be thrown into the newly built juvenile detention center, Bully Island, until they're old enough for college. After this fiendish decree, our heroes are blindsided by an army of Hall Monitors and are swiftly thrown behind bars. But Slugamor, being the slippery slug that he is quickly manages to escape the prison. The others, however, are not so fortunate. Now it's up to Slugamor and Draco to work together to free their friends and Escape From Bully Island!

Screenshots

Explore the vast and menacing Bully Island both outside and in!

Outside the prison, visit places both familiar and new with Draco's sarcastic pal Slugamor!

Switch over to Draco to plumb the depths of the prison and rescue your friends!

NOTE: This is still a fairly early build of the game. Graphics are subject to more stuff added, or something.

Characters

Draco
A reptilian prankster with a heart of gold, Draco doesnt cause trouble maliciously. Hes just an unfortunate combination of an overactive imagination and a short attention span. His pudding bombs have made his a name to be feared in Reon Elementarys underground prank scene, and his haphazard schemes often lead himself and his friends into unexpected and bizarre situations.

Slugamor
Dracos best friend, Slugamor would much rather be in his lab, read a good book, or solve world hunger than help Draco with his half-baked pranks. Slugamor often plays the straight man to Dracos craziness, but has been known to snap himself, especially when girls are involved. Slugamor has also been diagnosed with chronic misfortune, and a day rarely passes where he isn't crushed, creamed, wedgied, or eaten. His dry sense of humor often gets him in trouble, but Draco is always there to bail out his "diminutive, sarcastic bug buddy."

Grassoon
The son of a renowned Rocket Scientist and an equally renowned Brain Surgeon, Grassoon should have it all: Smarts, wit, and class. In reality, he has the IQ of a wooden nickel, and a black hole for a stomach. When not eating hot dogs, Grassoon can be found thinking about eating hot dogs, or shouting about how much he loves eating hot dogs. Despite his irritating idiocy, Grassoons doe-eyed innocence and enthusiasm endear him to everyone he doesnt eat. His parents however, consider him to be their punishment for making fun of stupid people in high school.

Terrier
The literal Big Dog on campus, Terrier loves to work out and play paintball as much as he loves to play fetch and chase cars. Though he isnt a bully, this is one guy you dont want to mess with. Dont be fooled by his tough guy exterior tough, hes a big ol softie at heart. Unless you're a squirrel. In that case I'd suggest keeping a safe distance away. Terrier is also renowned for his ability to play pretend, and has a habit of getting carried away in his various roles.

Soldiernaut
Reon Elementarys premier bully, Soldiernaut takes pride in the pain he causes. Whether its beating up Slugamor, taunting Draco, or manipulating Grassoon, this evil little reptile just loves to make trouble. Despite his maliciousness, Soldiernaut isnt the brightest bulb, and often wavers between evil genius and dimwitted bully. He's also looking for a lackey trade, if interested, please call the following number 1-800-GET-RID-OF-DUMBANG.

Dumbang
Dumbang is Soldiernauts favorite (by default) lackey. Because Soldiernaut is more of a do it yourself kind of bully, Dumbang usually just does menial tasks that Soldiernaut doesnt feel like doing himself. In fact, it could be argued that Dumbang is subject to more abuse than most of Soldiernauts victims. Not that any of this bothers him; it all just bounces off his thick, metallic head. Also, he turns into a fierce deity hell-bent on destroying all of humanity whenever he eats lunch. This happens more often than youd think.

Salaspark
The hottest girl in Reon Elementary (literally!) and the subject of Dracos affections. Salaspark is not afraid to use her feminine wiles to get what she wants, namely the contents of Draco's wallet. And when that doesnt work well, she's not adverse to giving people third degree burns to get her way as well. While she may look sweet, behind that coy smile is a mind as cunning and crafty as they come.

Sunstar
Salaspark's level headed gal-pal. Sunstar seems to be one of the few kids with a good head on their shoulders, and does her best to keep everyone out of trouble. She also has trouble hiding her disdain for some of the less intelligent members of the group. She considers Slugamor to be her good friend, and wishes he wouldn't get mixed up in Draco's shenanigans. Shes also a surprisingly adept texter despite her lack of thumbs, fingers, and hands.

Newcomers
There are a few newcomers in this episode. I will update periodically with their bios and picture!

Wow, I can already tell just how atmospheric this game is going to be, and from only two screenshots nonetheless! Best of luck with development!

Just read your dev blog, and I must say I completely agree about feeling like a tiny fish in a big sea as far as the availability of indie games goes. But keep fighting the good fight, this game looks to be quite the fun ride! Looking forward to the demo.

Thanks for the comments guys! Any and all feedback is welcomed with open arms!

The art style of this game really takes me back to AGS '2000!

Thanks! That mean a lot coming from a master of the old-school style such as yourself! Though truth be told, back in 2000, I was but a young lad watching my older sibling play the Nancy Drew adventure games on our ancient Compaq PC! Ah, how time flies...

nice game with decent old school graphics andthe were well thought out and very logical and very good story so all in all it was a very fun game to play.

Awesome! Glad to hear you enjoyed the game! Keeping the puzzles grounded in logic (despite the silliness surrounding them) was a major focus of mine, so I'm glad to hear it payed off! Thanks so much for taking the time to play the game!

I think there's a slight resemblance with 5DAS in these screenshots... a little boy on tree, and a red car... is there some deeper sense in this?  :P

Graphics look fun btw!

Ha! I never noticed that before, but you're right! Though, if you get a chance to play through the game, I'm sure you'll find that 5 Days a Stranger and Reon Quest, go for a bit of a different tone :D. Thanks for the comment!

@ ProgZmax, that's a tough act to follow! Awesome trailer, certainly got me interested :D

Anyway, here's a screen from Reon Quest Episode 2: Escape From Bully Island. Looks like it won't just be Draco doing the adventuring this time around!

And trust me, he knows what he's saying. It's a journey he's made SEVERAL times...

My sincerest apologies folks! I figured since the game was only about an hour or so, a saving system wasn't necessary. Luckily it's an easy fix, and now there is a saving system implemented! Hope you guys can enjoy the rest of the game now, and feel free to give any and all feedback! I'd love to hear what you guys think!

EDIT: Apparently somehow adding the save system made it so the music skips whenever a sound effect is played. This is now fixed as well.

It's here! It's here! It's finally here! Yes, this is is the first game of the Reon Quest series, and my first game working with AGS as well. It's a comedic adventure that should last you about an hour and a half on your first playthrough. I'd really like to thank everyone on the forums here who encouraged me and helped me learn to use AGS, and I really hope that you guys enjoy this game as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

Story: After a Pudding Bomb is detonated late one Wednesday night in Reon Elementary School, Draco (a reptilian prankster with a heart of gold) is unfairly blamed and placed in Sunday detention. Through the help of a decidedly smug letter, Draco discovers that he was in fact framed by the Mysterious Aluminatti Society. Swearing revenge, Draco must now break out of detention and bring justice to the Aluminattis. But unfortunately for Draco, things aren't quite as simple as they seem...

Features:

-Twelve Puzzle Packed Rooms
-A Deep and Emotionally Involving Story About Pudding (AND Spicy Gumbo!)
-A Shameless Plug for Episode 2
-Original Soundtrack
-Various Morons with which to Converse

Well, I changed it so that everything is bundled in the .exe and that has gotten it working on other PC's, but when I run it with the AGS Mac engine, the sound still doesn't work. I've run other AGS games perfectly fine with the Mac engine, so I'm still a little stymied why the music won't run.

EDIT: My explanations seem a little convoluted, let me see if I can simplify a bit

On a PC: Sound files only work when bundled in .exe. Will not work if in .vox.

On a Mac: Only a few sound effects work, even when everything is bundled with .exe.

I'd like to get all the sound working on a Mac, and perhaps understand why the .vox isn't working on PC.

Hope this made things clearer

Beginners' Technical Questions / Audio Issues
Fri 22/06/2012 18:10:54
Hey everyone, sorry to be back so soon with another problem, but it seems I'm having trouble with my game's audio. Whenever I compile my game and then play the game's .exe file on any other computer than the one with all my music files on it, the music will not play. I have been sure to have the game's .vox file included (I just turn the compiled folder into a .zip file and then download it on another computer to play), but it is still not working. The strange part is, one sound effect will play, but nothing else will. If someone knows how to fix this i'd be much obliged.

NOTE: Found this on the wiki: MP3, OGG and WAV music files are not included in the exe. They will instead be built into a file called MUSIC.VOX when you click the "Rebuild VOX files" option in the editor. Since OGGs, MP3s and WAVs override all other music file types, this allows you to have a Digital Music Pack which you can distribute seperately to your game. If it is present in the game directory it will be used, otherwise any other music available (eg. MIDI) will be played instead.

Do you guys think this could be the reason why only one of my sound files is playing? If so, where is the "Rebuild VOX" files option in the editor? I couldn't find it anywhere...  :-[

Great news folks! We've got music!
#114
Awesome! Got it all working now. Thanks guys!

Hello everyone! In the project I'm currently working on, I'm trying to set up an interface for two different playable characters. I'm aiming for them to have different mouse icons (but the same set of commands eg walk, talk, touch. This is purely cosmetic and less important) and different inventories, but be able to trade items between their distinct inventories. Is this feasible? I was thinking that I could design two different inventory GUIs and have them switch depending on what character is active, but I could not find a parameter that checks who the current player character is. Is this the best way to go about doing this? Thanks in advance!

Hi all! I've started making my second game using AGS, but I have been unable to run the game in the editor. Every time I try, it fails and I get the following message.

"The game engine does not appear to have shut down properly. If the problem persists, post the problem on the tech forum."

The other game that I've made with AGS is running fine in the editor, but every new game I create refuses to work. If someone could help me, I'd be much obliged. Thanks in advance!

Hey guys it’s been awhile since I last updated, so I thought I’d post and let you guys know how the project is coming. The good news is, the game is completely finished except for the music! It would seem that the composer I’m working with is a very busy guy, but I’m doing my best to make sure that the compositions are getting done. Anyway, you guys also may have been wondering just who was in the various screens I posted, so I took the liberty of making this…

Thanks for the nice responses guys! Things are really coming together for this project, and once I can get the sound worked out, keep your eyes peeled for the release!

@Eric: Perhaps I should label my screens more clearly, but I believe you're actually referring to a character named Terrier. Slugamor (ironically) is nerdy, shrimpy, and uncool... so pretty much the opposite of the Fonz!  (laugh)

@Swordofkings128: I'm afraid this game takes place on a Sunday, so the Burp-o-Mart is closed. But don't worry, you'll be visiting it in later episodes for sure!

Greetings fellow Adventure Game enthusiasts! This is my first time working with the AGS Editor, but thanks to the vast resources for help and advice, I can finally say that this project is nearing completion. This game series is based off of a cartoon that I draw with my cousin, and I've always believed that these characters were well suited to an adventure game. So, without any further ado, I present...

Thanks for the Help Khris! The repeatedly_execut_always works perfectly. Unfortunately, I do need the finish line to scroll more than once (you can try the race repeatedly, and lose if you haven't done certain things to your vehicle). I don't have the room saving state, but the game still only runs the finish line once.
