Recruitment / Reon Quest Needs Testers!
Thu 27/09/2012 21:34:36
Hello all! Cutler here from Slug4Brains Studios, the creators of the Reon Quest series! We are now looking for some testers to try out Reon Quest Episode 2: Escape From Bully Island and give us feedback before we release it later this month!

Feeling crafty? You'll have to be to escape this prison!

Story: After the antics surrounding the Mysterious Aluminatti Society, the Principal of Reon Elementary School has had enough! With the big PTA Meeting on the horizon and his school’s reputation on the line, he does what any other reasonable Principal would do: Orders Draco and his “merry band of idiots” to be thrown into the newly built juvenile detention center, Bully Island, until they’re old enough for college. After this fiendish decree, our heroes are blindsided by an army of Hall Monitors and are swiftly thrown behind bars. But Slugamor, being the slippery slug that he is quickly manages to escape the prison. The others, however, are not so fortunate. Now it’s up to Slugamor and Draco to work together to free their friends and Escape From Bully Island!

Explore and puzzle your way out of the prison while rescuing your friends!

Reon Quest Episode 2 features two playable characters, multiple locations, a fully functional save system, an excellent original soundtrack composed by a friend of our very own m0ds, and should sustain a playing time of no more than two hours. Playing Episode 1 is not at all required, their stories are totally separate, though you may miss a few in-jokes. There is also lots of dialogue, so there could possibly be a few spelling errors that need to be caught as well. So... who among us is brave enough to Escape From Bully Island?

Send me a PM or shoot an email to Slug4Brains@gmail.com if you're interested! Thanks!

I'M NOT DEAD! Yup, we are indeed not dead (just in the thick of the college process sadly). But there is good news! The game is completed from start to finish! Hooray! We're just missing one thing.

Guess what it is?

Yup, music. (Deja vu all over again eh?). Alas our resident musician is doing 10,000 other things right now, so it will be a few more months until we get the music to get the game finished. Just wanted to let you guys know we haven't fallen off the horse yet!

Here's a new screenie! Looks like the school is locked down tight!

Also if you haven't, be sure to check out the New and improved Episode 1!

I'm stuck in the same place Partydoc was above me but

Spoiler
It won't let me pick up the chemicals in the mouse room. Am I missing something?

Loving the game so far! I'll have to go back and play part one after I'm done.

Hey everyone! Update time once again! Work on Episode 2 has been coming along swimmingly, and the game is now playable from start to finish! All that remains to be added are some final touches, and of course music and sound (sound familiar?).

Here's a new screenshot. This is the Burp-O-Mart a convenience store run by local slob Burpadon. It seems Dumbang's annoying whistling is giving Burpadon a stomach ache, maybe Slugamor can help?

Playing it right now, and it's great stuff. The sense of humor is right up my alley! Figuring out how to get the ring as of right now... can't wait to play the rest of the game!

Now I'm fairly new at this but, when I discovered AGS back in December, I had no clue whether I was going to finish a game or not, but much to my surprise I actually did. Here's what helped the most for me...

I'm a big list guy. When I'm feeling like a game is an overwhelming amount of work, I sit down, and list out everything that I need to do, then I just make myself do a couple of those things every time I to work on the game. Makes progress feel much more visible and manageable... at least for me.

As my music teacher says, the hardest note to practice is always the first. Sometimes you just gotta force yourself to see it through to the end.

Hello everyone! Due to some feedback concerning difficulty in reading text (not quite enough contrast with some of the darker text), I have now released Reon Quest Episode 1: v1.1. Other improvements include improved cursors, and a few more hints for one of the more difficult puzzles.

So if you haven't given the game a try, go for it! It's only gotten better!

Plus, Episode 2 is right around the corner...  ;)

It's update time again folks! But before we begin, Slugamor convinced (threatened) me to show you this piece of fancily drawn bonus art (doodling)...

...hold it right there! We're not done yet! The game is playable from start to finish, but there's a whole lot of polishing to be done in the next couple of months so stay tuned. Here's some new screenshots from the intro to the game, enjoy!

The game begins with a fancy blue recap of the events of Episode 1. Remember outwitting these guys? Ahh, good times...

But soon enough Draco and his pals are on a one way trip to the hoosegow. Parallax scrolling included!

and no update would be complete without a character reveal! I'd like you guys to meet...

Thudsir

A bully is nothing without a lackey, and Soldierknight is no exception. As you could probably guess, Dumbang and Thudsir share quite a bit of DNA (and most likely a brain as well). Thudsir is renowned for his gardening abilities and his penchant for giving people strange nicknames. Though he's in no rush to escape, perhaps this lackey can help you deal with his Boss's foul temper...

Enjoy!

Personally, I think voice acting can be a double edged sword. Done well, it can only enhance the player's experience, especially in a genre such as Adventure Games, where you're trying to create a world in which someone can become immersed. But done poorly, and well... you get something like this... (HOW DARE YOU DISTURB MY FAMILY VACATION! GWAAAAAAARG!!) (perhaps an extreme example). I'd say it's easier to get good voiceover work in lighthearted, more cartoony games (provided the voices aren't annoying, that is) than more serious games where the immersion can be broken more easily. But overall, there's really no middle ground with voice acting: If you're going to do it, do it well, otherwise don't waste the time and effort.

It's not... great. But AGS is really the only thing I use it for, and that runs well enough. I am using the on board graphics card, so that could be the problem. I'll try those suggestions!

I do indeed have Vista on an ancient Desktop from 2001!

But yes, none of this is making sense to me either, how could a computer be more advanced yet too old at the same time?  ???
#93
I know, it was simple to find, I just wanted to make sure I was downloading the right thing!  :-[

But unfortunately, I downloaded/installed DirectX 9 and it still refuses to work. I think my computer may just be too old... (it's from 2001)

Thanks for the responses!

I tried Force Alternate Letterbox and the filters, but got the same message. This leads me to believe I don't have Direct3D 9 installed.

I'm not sure if I have Direct3D 9 installed, how do I check that? And if I don't, do you guys know of a place where I could download it?
#95
Hi all, I've been trying to run AGS Games in Direct3D 9, instead of DirectDraw, but every time I try I get the following error message: "There was a problem initializing graphics mode 640x400 (16 bit) (Problem: 'The requested adapter mode is not supported')

I've tried with quite a few different games and get the same message every time.

My computer currently has DirectX 11 installed
I've run a DirectX Diagnostic and it reports that Direct3D acceleration is enabled.

I'd like to be able to run games in Direct3D so I can use FRAPS to record gameplay, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
#96
Ok, I wasn't running it in Direct3D before (which was most likely the cause of that problem), but when I switch it to Direct3D, it will not allow me to run the game, and I get the following error message: "There was a problem initializing graphics mode 640x400 (16 bit) (Problem: 'The requested adapter mode is not supported').

It is an AGS game btw. Is this simply a problem with my computer (and perhaps its graphics card) now? (It's a tad on the old side)
#97
Sorry about the double post, but I've installed FRAPS, but I cannot get it to record while the game is open. Whenever I start recording and open the game, the game does not run correctly and does not even show up in the recorded footage. Anyone know how to fix this?
#98
Thanks for the suggestions guys! I'll got check those out!

Oh! Hadn't noticed this thread before now, otherwise I would've (and probably should've) posted sooner! My name is Cutler and I've been interested in Adventure Games since I was a young'un watching my older sibling play the HER Interactive Nancy Drew games on our old Compaq '97! I'm a cartoonist/student by day and my very good friend (who also happens to be my cousin) and I have been drawing and creating a universe we call "Reon" for now about seven years. We decided we wanted to create a series of adventure games with our characters, and my search for a program to help us achieve that goal led me here. I've met a few of you throughout my ramblings on these forums (Mainly on the help section!  ;)) but it's nice to formally introduce myself, and I hope to make the acquaintance of many more of you guys in the future! This is a real great community you've got going on here, so many great ideas and exciting projects, I don't even know where to start!  :-D

Hey everyone! I've been hard at work on Episode 2, and thought it was time for an update! The game is about halfway finished, and everything is coming along on schedule. So now, I'd like you to meet...

Soldierknight

Soldiernaut's older brother and premier bully at Reon High, Soldierknight has complete control over Bully Island. Even the guards fear this massive, mean, monstrous teenager. Soldierknight is equal parts cruel and calculating and his merciless bullying makes the antics of his younger brother look like child's play in comparison. His favorite method of torture is the "Alaskan Chili Bowl" (You don't want to know, trust me). Soldierknight is one of Draco's most formidable foes, and Draco is going to have to outwit him if he wants to escape Bully Island with his hide intact.

I also thought I'd show a new screenshot. This is the forest where Draco's family take up residence. Here you can chat with Mr. and Mrs. Draco, his little brother Eggy, and his pet Pterodactyl, Fluffles (who has a penchant for maiming Slugamor).

Enjoy!
