I have updated that BFAQ entry with this information.  Thanks!

The BFAQ lists the max height of a scrolling room as 1,400 pixels for 320x200 resolution, or 2,800 pixels for 640x400 resolution.  If this was once the maximum, it is no longer the case.  I was able to do a 4096x4096 background at 320x200 resolution.

Does anyone know what the actual maximum is now, if any?

Well, for those of you familiar with Ultima IV, here is my idea:

In Ultima IV there were introduced 8 virtues (honesty, compassion, valor, honor, justice, sacrifice, spirtuality, and humility, which are based on 3 principles (truth, love, and courage).

In Ultima VI, there is a bard named Mandrake that suggests that the problem with the 8 virtues is the fact they are based on such stuffy principles.  He suggests that they would be better in they were based on the principles of wine, women, and song.  The resulting virtues would then be drunkenness, sensuality, harmony, lust, laziness, dance, indulgence, and happiness.

Now suppose this bard got transported to a parallel universe where he spreads his philosophy, and the society comes to revere these virtues in much the same way as the original eight virtues were venerated on his home world.

I never played the Underworld ones for some reason, nor Ultima Online (not a fan of MMORPGs).  I played III through VII (parts 1 and 2), and loved them all.  VIII felt like a totally different game to me, and I never played IX.

I suppose I didn't think about CRPGs by nature having adventure game elements.  Still, some are a lot more focused on hack-n-slash, kill `em and take their stuff than they are on puzzle-solving and the like.

If so, I'd like to toss around ideas for an AGS Ultima-parody or style game.  I was such a fan of these games growing up.  Many of them had plenty of adventure game elements, as opposed to being strictly RPGs.

I discovered AGS when I discovered there were free King's Quest remakes out there.  I grew-up on King's Quest, and loved all of the Quest for Glory series as well.  When I discovered AGS, I saw that there are a TON of games out there, so I hardly know where to start!

So, should I start with some of the highest-rated games, or can people give me a few recommendations of what they would consider to be "must play" games?

I just wanted to say I loved the video tutorials as well!  They were well put together, and very informative.  I think a publishing one would be helpful as well.

Ok, thank you!  That's the info I needed.

I am new to AGS, and am making a small game that includes a part where the character pushes an object to another part of the room, wherever the user specifies.  I think I know how I want to do this: have the character walk to the object, turn off the object's visibility, switch to a custom view for the main character that shows the character bent over pushing the object and let him move where he wants, then when he uses the interact cursor on himself, switch to the normal view, move the object next to him, and then make it visible again.

The part that I'm wondering about is how to limit the character's ability to interact while she is in "pushing mode".  I understand that I can check the character's current view in my scripts, but it seems tedious to have to check for it in dozens of different places like that.

Anyway, my question is: is there an easier way to limit the character's actions while she is pushing the object?  I just want her to be able to move, and use the interact cursor on herself to stop moving.

Also, if there's an easier way to accomplish the object pushing than what I described above, please let me know.   :)

Is there a good reason to choose such low resolutions to begin with, other than nostalgia?  I understand that higher resolutions will be lower, take-up more disk space and more memory, but surely modern  computers can handle 640x480 and above, though?  It looks like the vast majority of games use 320x200, so it seems like there must be some kind of compelling reason besides nostalgia.  ???
