They are working as miners, some are famous fighters and others are nice little helpers. Some have a long beard and most of them wear a big cap. You know them from books, fairy tales and from your neighbour's garden...

Topic: Dwarves

Rules:
- create an original, playable character
- maximum number of colours is 32 inclusive transparency
- sprite size must not be larger than 60x80 pixels
- any kind of dwarf is allowed (except giant dwarves :))

I hope you enjoy this Jam. Good luck and have fun!

Maybe someone can help me with this problem:

At the moment I'm looking for some old AGS games. I already checked the download links in the AGS games section and also had a look on AGA's aafiles bicycle site. Unfortunately these files are not available there. I already contacted the authors but these are also unable to offer the game (file deleted, not archived, no reply, ...). :(
Well, these are the games that I am searching:

Sep 2003-09 Terence Independent Terminator by Paranoia
Aug 2001-08 Monkeyville by Nickboy77
Jul 2001-07 Fad of Devils Hash by MonkeySpank

I hope someone can find these games in his archive... Thanks for checking your disks.

What is MAGS?
MAGS is a monthly competition for all amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to use AGS to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner.

For more information please visit the Official MAGS Website

Why should I enter MAGS?
We're not here to tell you that you should enter MAGS, but merely allow it as a creative opportunity to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and generally as a good kick-start for the new comers (a.k.a n00bies).

MAGS is the perfect opportunity to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the next month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but should try not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here are the rules set by last month's winner nihilyst:

Topic: The Journey

This month you should make a game about some kind of journey. This can be a story of a holiday travel, a runaway, a biker road-movie, a chase, a journey to another planet, into a human body or anything else you can think of.
The journey should be complete, i.e. with preparations, the travel itself (that should fill out the greatest part of your game) and the arrival (optional the way back, too, if you want to). The preparations and the arrival can be cutscenes only or playable, that's up to you.

You HAVE TO
- have at least 1 scrolling room
- involve a child in some kind (if you for example would choose the journey into a body, then you have to find an adequate replacement like a child virus or something; you could also make the main character a child)
- involve an animal in one of the puzzles (again, if you choose an unusual setting, find a workaround)
- include some kind of fight; it may be interactive or not.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries need to be in by May 26th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

With the ruleset of last month's winner Peder we're going popular again:

Topic: Fantasy World

The whole story has to happen in a fantasy world.
In other words: There can be talking animals, floating things (like houses, tables, ...), wierd skies and landscapes etc. Use your fantasy!

A few restrictions:
- There MUST be a wizard as non-playable character in the game.
- There SHOULD be an old magic book in the game as an inventory item (for example, the wizard has lost his magic book and you have to search for it).
- There HAS TO be a blue cup somewhere! Don't have to be possible to pick it up. Since it is supposed to be fantasy it can be a talking one as well.

That's all, no further restrictions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by April 25th.

The new rules are designed by Abisso. The base of this month's rules is this location:

Topic: The Skies

"Skies" means at least ten thousand meters above the sea, and maybe over the clouds (not just the top of a mountain, instead). The space is not valid, either.
The world under it can be an earthly one or not, as you prefer.

The game must feature:
- A flying city of some kind (built on the clouds, or just magically floating, even flying thanks to an engine)
- An angel sort of creature (even a fallen one, if you like, but not demon-like) as the main character, or as a secondary character, but NOT just an item (like a statuette) and NOT just an image (a picture).

No other restrictions.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by March 27th.

Here we go with the new rules by buloght. Not too difficult and very free for interpretation:

Topic: Underworld

Generally anything fitting the topic is allowed. So make up your mind and think of a great story and location like for example:

- the real underworld
- some kind of society under the city
- a dwarven mine
- etc.

No further restrictions.

You remember the MAGS competitions in 2005? All together 29 games entered the contests and offered a great range of amusement, humour and entertainment. To celebrate all the contestants and to bring all those games back to your minds and on your screens again here's "Maggies".

We don't want to judge about best graphics, best character or other best categories - there's already a famous award for doing this. "Maggies" just wants to know what's your favourite MAGS game 2005. It's up to you to decide what's most important: Graphics, gameplay, idea, interpretation of the MAGS rules, whatever...

The voting period will run two long weeks until January 17th.
Take your time to play all the games and decide in the end...

For voting please visit the MAGS site or make your choice right here:

New year, new competition, new topic - this time by Bernie...

Topic: Old people

DESCRIPTION:
Your game should tell a small story of someone old. Be it gramps trying to get those pesky kids off his lawn or granny solving a murder mystery in the neighbourhood, anything goes! Old people face problems we wouldn't even think about while we're still young, so there should be plenty of room for interesting ideas.

REQUIREMENTS:
-Your main character needs to be old (65+) and retired.

Here we go with the new guidelines set by BaRoN...

Topic: Elves

DESCRIPTION:
Elves are "little creatures of folklore with magic power, often mischievous or malicious, but sometimes kind and helpful." - Websters Dictionary.

This theme is open to broad interpretation: it can easily be related to (certain seasonal festivities) or not as you see fit.

REQUIREMENTS:
1) a bouncing ball
2) a pinching crab
Both of these must be included in the game, but how you do so is up to you (i.e. backgrounds, objects, inventory, NPCs, etc...)

3) Included prominently in the plot there must be some detail of the social structure of elvish society. Elves being a fictional - or at least a very elusive - race, this requirement can be exercised as creatively as you wish.

Yet another ruleset by Wretched and this time we go for a world record. Or some kind of...

Topic: Superlatives

Your game must try and set a world record in adventure gaming, e.g.
- biggest monster ever,
- most difficult puzzle ever,
- stupidest player character ever,
- etc.
It's up to you about what superlatives could appear or take place...

Inventory/scripting must include a functional, working stylophone or mini piano.

More information about stylophones

This month with Wretched's new rules we refer to the famous board game of kings...

Topic: Inside Chess

All NPC's (non player characters) in the game must be or be derived from chess pieces, either by occupation, shape or characteristics.
Note: Just calling someone Mr Bishop, is not sufficient, unless he is a Bishop.

As in different languages the functions and names of the pieces are slightly different it is also possible to use horse instead of knight and runner instead of bishop.

The game should include some sort of chess puzzle, e.g. an actual chess problem or just something using the knight's move.

So don't go for a chess simulation or a game where characters play the board game! Think more of being "inside" the chess game - anyway the theme of your game is free except the already mentioned rules.

The new MAGS rules yet another time go a very different way: They define the main character...

Topic: Chalk

Wretched's idea behind the rules is that the main character should be simple to draw, allowing lots of good animations.

- The main character must be a chalk figure come to life. This could be a police murdered corpse outline trying to find the murderer, or a school kids drawing on the playground or a blackboard. Or even a chalk hill carving thing. Other ideas may come to your mind.
- The main character must have at least one special ability, e.g. elastic arms, flight, metamorphosis, whatever.
- You must include at least 3 different animations (these animations do not include the standard cycles like walking, talking, thinking,...). More are always welcome of course.

There are no other restrictions for this month!

Unlike most other topics this competition is not limited to a special theme or  to a number of inventory items, but see for yourself:

Topic: Textless

This month's MAGS has only one limitation - your game should not contain any ingame messages or texts (including speech) in a known language. Exceptions are title and load-save-exit dialogs. You can invent your own language, use symbols and icons all the way or create a game without any message at all.

There are no other rules for this month!
We probably won't see adventures using the standard question-answer dialogs. Anyway it is possible to make short and creative games with this rule. Be inventive :)

The game can be presented with any theme, but the following guidelines must be observed:

- The player character must be female.
- There must be at least one game sequence or room in which the player character is underwater (or in some other liquid if desired) and must swim rather than walk. It is not required that the character can drown, though that is certainly an acceptable feature.
- At least three of these inventory items / objects must be included in the game:
* Wire cutters
* An old book of any kind
* A crown
* An orrery or other model of celestial bodies (it doesn't have to be our solar system)
* A rare egg
* A wristwatch with a special function (e.g. radar, communication, turkey call, etc.)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Topic: Outside the Boundaries

2ma2's guidelines emphasize on gaming design and try to make creators think outside the boundaries of stereotype adventure gaming.

- No inventories allowed.
- The whole game shall take place in the same location: a bunker.
- Can't use the classic Sierra nor LEC interface.

To clarify:
No inventories means that you're not allowed to keep and use inventory objects with your hotspots. It is however allowed to (ab)use the inventory system for making the interface or any other kind of unique use.

The game will take place within a bunker. What type, scenario or era is fully up to you to decide. It may be WW2, postapocalyps or 19th century tea party as far as I care. You may twist the thesis as much as possible.

You can not use the standard Sierra-interface, nor the popular LEC-emulation. I want to see something unusual. This will affect the actual gameplay and puzzle design, so you might want to choose carefully. Do as you please; it might be a one-click-for-everything design or 10 modes ranging from "smell" to "merry smile". This is the tough part boys and girls.

Remember, there is no right or wrong way to make adventures. If there's a challenge involved, it's a game. If it's a story, it's an adventure!

Topic: Humoristic space game

This time your game needs to take place outer space. Of course you can use a planet as a location or a space ship. Whatever - outer space. You should create something like the SQ-games, a Star Trek- or Star Wars-parody is also possible. But you don't need to refer to existing SciFi series.

- inventory items that must appear: a laser gun, a broken light-saber (like in Star Wars), a working tricorder (like in Star Trek) and an "antique" game
- the game must have one mini-game! This is a unique, stand-alone game inside your adventure game like the pocket game in Apprentice II. It does not need to be too complex but should show some creative scripting, so just a dialog quiz where you need to find the right answer won't do it
- Don't forget about the humorisic part :)

All entries should be in by May 27th May 29th.

Topic: EGA

This time Viktor's rules go an unusual way: We face more technical restrictions rather than guidlines for a theme. It's a new, exciting challenge for all AGS users.

- graphics:
: use only 16 colors in your game
: screen resolution should be 640x350/400/480 pixels (not a must)
(640x350 is not supported by AGS as screen size but you could use background graphics in this resolution)

- inventory that should appear:
: cowboy hat
: tarot card

- No other restrictions

All entries should be in by April 25th.

MAGS is the perfect opportuninty to make a game, and the wonderful prize is to announce the net month's rules, and all competitiors get the game placed on the MAGS website.

MAGS is meant to be fun and is aimed at everyone, despite their skill. If you have poor art skills work on graphics, and vice-versa, as the voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, you may get help for the competiton, but must not get anyone else to do any part of the game for you.

Topic: Keys

After the inspiration that not being allowed to use keys in puzzles was last month, SSH's main rule this time is that there must be a puzzle involving a key that uses it in a new and innovative way (see last months thread for some ideas). No cliches, such as just finding the key in another room, or pushing a key out of am keyhole onto a bit of paper which is pulled under the door.

Other rules:
- Must feature a dragon, unicorn and pegasus soemwhere in the game: these can be pictures in the background, inventory items or whatever, but they must be visible somewhere
- Must have a secretary character somewhere in the game

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All entries should be in by March 25th.

Please post a download link of your game entry to this thread, best with a screenshot. Thanks and good luck.

Topic: Hotel

The game must take place in a hotel.

It should be based upon one or two of the following genres:
- Crime
- Horror
- Western
- Sci-Fi

No puzzles should involve any sort of keys. Keyholes are fine.

At least 4 rooms. This can include a bar, reception, and/or any other sort of room which might fit into your hotel.

The main character could be good or bad. At least 3 other characters, and both genders should be represented.

Any resolution.

All entries should be in by February 25th.

Again we have a topic where game authors can show their creativity as there are not that many restrictions:

Zoo

- One of your locations (of at least three) must be a zoo.
You could for example start the game in a zoo like in "The box that ate time" or use an animal that wants to escape as main character. Even better ideas may come to your mind. Just don't forget the zoo :)

- At least three different species must appear in the game.
This is not limited to the "usual" species. Own creations are also welcome.

- Include a gag or reference to a known movie start animal like Flipper or Lassie - there exist many more...

- No other restrictions.

All entries should be in by January 28th.
