Beginners' Technical Questions / Re: Save As?
Fri 12/12/2014 14:10:31
Yeah, I've never found a way to do this either without just backing up the whole folder manually at regular intervals.

As AGS seems to force saves even if you quit the editor or forcibly shut it down (in my experience, someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this one) then the only way I know of is to make sure you have backed up the game manually each time it works to your satisfaction...

For example: Just even for some MAGS projects I have about 15 complete backups of the entire game folder still on file...

I have seen some posts recently about how DropBox automatically creates archives or something, but I'm too old to trust all that newfangled stuff:

I go for a manual backup every time!

@Pindorama
Am I red like a red cherry?

Well what ever happens, if I make it or not, I already got one of the best regards. It's been a true adventure to follow the pixel brush and see where 'they' might lead to. Now, time is against me, I have to fly on 16th. 4 Days are hardley enough time, I just love art to much to bodge it careless. But I try to make it anyway and hope to find some hours to finish the rest. What a thrilling journey.  ;-D

See ya.

Your background is starting to look AMAZING!!! Thanks also from me for the link to your gallery. Have you made any tutorials on your process or followed any tutorials from other artists that you could recommend? There's just so much going on with your composition I would love to hear/read some commentary on each step!

Donald Dowell! ;-D
"DO WELL" follows ALD (disease mitigated by Lorenzo's Oil) and DON (Godfather)
[close]

Making this one up actually brought up a question for me:

Spoiler
I always thought the name was Donald Dowell (DAU-EL, as in pronounced like a round, wooden stick) but was it actually supposed to be pronounced Donald Do-well (as in: "he will do well in this school" for example).

How did other people read/pronounce the name?

So I guess the answer is:

Spoiler
Sierra Online
[close]

Figuring:

Spoiler
"Adventurous concern" meaning a company that makes adventure games (Sierra) and twisting "inner eSailor" (with the capital S signifying the beginning letter) gives the anagram: Sierra Online
[close]

* Mandle takes a bow and quickly turns off...

Spoiler
the "Anagram Solver" tab on his browser before anyone notices...
[close]

In my defense however:

Spoiler
I had already kinda figured out that Sierra was the first word via "Adventurous concern" and it being 6 letters long. My first guess was "Sierra Nevada", but it didn't fit at all. Then realised that "inner eSailor" was 12 letters long and went the cheap route and used the Anagram Solver...Sorry... :-[

Anyway:

(A nice easy one...)

So I created a template out of Room2
I created the new Room4, using the template of Room2
I renamed and modified Room4 properly

I'm suspecting that your problem lies herein somewhere. I have also worked on a game where I used extensive templates to add new rooms and I found that I had to be a real human robot to make sure every....single....thing was changed properly to make the new rooms behave.

I was kind of asking from the "blink and you miss it" point of view, as in was it suggesting that Baron and Ponch have some trouble controlling their...

Ummm...nevermind...

I honestly cannot think of a way to continue this post without awkwardness...

Has anyone here ever tried to create an isometric-type game on this engine before, something I can look at?

Secluded is the first AGS game which comes to mind. There may be more but I can't remember them.

You should directly PM the game desginer, btw, lest you want that game's thread to get locked. :)

Here's another one: Harry Potter RPG

What rock is the father of metal? To answer, you'll first have to go East, and again, and look for the letter of inquisition. (6)

Question:
Spoiler
Are there any numbers hidden in the wording like:

2 answer, you'll 1st have 2 go East, and again, and look 4 the letter of inquisition.

And:
Spoiler
Does "rock" and "metal" refer to the music genres? Because I wanted to guess "QUEEN" as it has two E's and a letter of inquisition (Q for question), but only 5 letters :(

Oh, Baron:

Spoiler
"Enter" was actually the correct answer. Sorry if I hadn't made that clear. I thought you were trying to get the answer on your own without looking at the correct reply. So yeah: "Speak friend and enter" and the "return" of the king were the solutions to the puzzle and the hint. Game over!

Yes...the clue refers to the Gate Of Moria, but the answer is not Moria. It is computer related. Super hint:

So when you talk to a pal on a chat room or messenger, you press the enter key after typing what you want to 'say'... Maybe. :-)

Enter?

Computer related, and a synonym for "return" (The Return of the King).
I've seen the movies, but I don't remember much. Did they have to shut up in order to gain access to any of the passages/caves or something like that? :P

I'm still baffled by what happened. How a PSD file could have become an (incomplete) AGF file inside is beyond my comprehension.

That's what gets me about this matter: I don't think that should be possible. Are you absolutely sure that this is what happened, and that it's not some huge coincidence: Like you had an AGF file which happened to have the same name from ages ago and are mistaking that for the file you saved, and the file you saved got saved to some obscure folder somewhere by mistake, maybe on a completely different drive? Have you done a full search for the lost file on all your media?

Anyway: best of luck either way!

Oh...and "heads" is not right.

Also: this shouldn't take a really deep knowledge of Lord Of The Rings to get it. In fact, if you've seen the movies then that should be enough.

Hint:

Both the original puzzle and the next cryptic hint are related to Lord Of The Rings, in case that wasn't too clear.

Make em as realistic as they need to be. If you have an unrealistic puzzle, and you want to include it in the game, simply ask "why is this here?", and construct a reason for it to be there. Is the owner of the mansion obsessed with warding off evil spirits, and created several puzzle rooms in order to confuse them into being trapped there? Is the mansion a folly with traps and tricks to stop interlopers? Is the mansion being used by an evil cult who are too deranged to think of standard locking mechanisms?

Don't just say "Who cares?" because that's a sign of bad game design. Always be thinking "How?" and "Why?". Keep on deconstructing, and reconstructing until you have a rich experience with good contextualisation. That way the player will gladly solve the puzzles, and not have to suspend disbelief for gameplay elements, because they will be part of the overarching narrative.

I was going to say something like this, but it was already said much better!
