I don't think anyone was actually suggesting that!  More just a point of interest, "could we have made this with AGS?".

Ha ha! My bad! I have ASD and I tend to miss that and take everything quite literally! I've lost count of the times my friends and family make some jokey statement and I correct them or question it because I took it literally. I think that will always be my blind spot! (laugh)

We've been really lucky and have had a lot of amazing reviews. I'm certainly humbled and grateful for all the positive feed back. I'm a little sad to see its not been so well received here, but hey you can't win em all!

Also just a quick FYI you dont need to have the outlined font in the UI. We have a classic font option more in line with classic SCUMM. And AGS was never considered as an engine option as far as I'm aware. Ron is an experienced engine programmer so it wasn't hard for him to build his own. In my opinion AGS would have been unsuitable because we needed to port to so many different platforms and it has too many limitations. I'm not sure why anyone would want us to compromise on the visual beauty of the game just so it could be programmed on AGS. Bit odd in my opinion but there you go! (laugh)

Hope the rest of you enjoy the game as much as we enjoyed making it! For us it certainly was a labour of love!

General Discussion / Re: Brexitmageddon
Fri 24/06/2016 23:52:43
I think a lot of us are too burned out and depressed to talk about it. I woke up just wanting it to all be a bad dream.

Basically if you want to know why we are unhappy check out James O'Briens LBC recordings of the subject. They did facts not feelings but today explained that we've basically been fucked over by a bunch of people who voted with their feelings. They didn't want experts but now the pound is crashing and Farage is admitting they campaigned on lies and they won't be spending the money as they promised, suddenly people want experts to reassure them!

The mood is unpleasant here. I'm not proud to be British. Camerons plan to appeal to the right wing nationalists kept his party in power with a majority government, but it has left us with the exposed xenophobic underbelly. People are being openly racist, and proud. It's a huge disappointment, not to mention stupid.

Most Brexiters are the people longing for the good old days when they were kids in the 60s. Boomers who will retire soon and leave us with potentially another recession. It's so stupid because their good old days still had loads of immigrants. So many from the West Indies and Asia! I mean our Indian immigrants created tikka masala curry which is basically a national dish! But they act like our country didn't have foreigners in it back then.

We've mistakenly listened to the scaremongering Murdoch media and bought into the idea that the EU and immigrants are the reason we have so much poverty and joblessness. Why we have no decent housing options and the NHS is failing. It's bullshit. We have no decent housing because our government isn't building affordable housing or capping rent! We have less jobs because harsh austerity is not conducive to economic stimulation. Our education costs and skyrocketing but degrees are becoming worth less and less. Our NHS is being sold off by the UK government. None of this is the EU and migrants! Most of our immigrants come from outside the EU anyway and we have control of those restrictions already! For instance we refused 3000 child refugees from Syria.

So basically we are in the unique position now of having people who believed pencils at the polling stations were an actual vote rigging strategy deciding the future of our nation. People who said they are tired of listening to experts. So those of us who remain have to weirdly hope all the worlds leaders and experts were wrong. Except for Putin, Farage, Johnson and Gove... When Gove is the best of the bunch you know you're in the shit.

Also well done to Wales who voted to leave but still want all the EU flood relief money they get!

Basically to summarise, we chose poorly but now have to make the best of a bad situation and try to salvage what we can of this country in a climate of xenophobia and proud nationalistic ignorance.

But you know we'll just put the kettle on, keep calm and carry on.

I wasn't in attendance but a big thanks to all who voted for Mess Goblins. I'm glad our little game did so well.

Congratulations to all the winners and nominees for making some great games.

If it's SFW then I will gladly attend. If it was reverting I would have given it a miss even though we are nominated. Thanks for clarifying. The mention of breasts made me wonder, but I'm glad to hear they are not being added in again.

I await you in the Grand Hall, where breasts and awkward rehearsals will be served.

Is this going to be a lesbian/breasts all over the place awards show? They removed it from the ceremony last year in an effort not to alienate female AGSers and those in general who felt it was a bit much. They had a more R rated after party to cater to both camps. I'd like to know in advance so I can decide whether or not I will attend the show.

I think it's personal preference. Plenty of people understood her perfectly well. The blog comments are very active and uncensored and there was a great response to the trailer and the voice actress. Of course there are people who didn't like it and have concerns but I mean that's a given with any game. :)

It looks wrong because the puppy pen doesn't line up with the tiles. You would expect something like that built into the store to line up better with the wall, floor, and door. The angles for them all are just a bit off in my opinion so the floor doesn't line up as you would expect when there are lines involved. A building doesn't tend to fan out inside the way this one does. I know it's trying to convey the perspective but it's not quite right. I'm not sure how I would fix that though.

Thimbleweed Park had a great reception at GDC and Ron wrote a great post about it linking to some of the articles written about the game.

It's really exciting seeing it all come together. I don't think you can please everyone but honestly the art, music, puzzles, and humour are all there.

I've also noticed a few people seemed to think Ray was basically going to be Scully, which she really really isn't, and I think that's why some people were surprised by her voice. I think it colours people's expectations of the character somewhat even before they've played the game.

Can I suggest some lady NPCs? I mean I can't make them with the generator but an all male cast seems a bit samey unless it's super relevant to the plot? Throw some gals in the mix for fun!

We aren't even talking about these people coding the engine. Rather they run and enforce this poll people claim they want. So if the poll results say "We want a paid dev to redesign with a crowdfunding attempt." they go and execute that. If the poll results say "We want to keep the editor but find a company to improve the code" they go an execute that. Of course if there was a team of programmers willing to sort out AGS this conversation wouldn't be happening. This would be a team of people who care about the community and are willing to put time and energy into executing a democratic process and enforcing the outcome of said process.

For me personally it makes little difference what direction it takes. I'm a go with the flow person. I will learn new code if I have to and I want what's best for the community at large. I have a soft spot for AGS and I want the engine improved, but I don't mind how people go about it or if they go about it at all. It's this never ending debate I find a shame. Do it, don't do it, just get some kind of system in place where something actually happens! If it changes people will adjust, if they don't they have the older editor versions to play with.

At present we are looking into Godot for future projects because AGS has limitations that we keep coming up against. Would love to continue developing on the engine and see it grow, but I think this debate will continue to rage and stifle progress. That's my two cents anyway. Hopefully the community can reach a consensus and achieve something that pleases most.

Okay I think that's a good idea. Anyone can put themselves forward, make a case for why they should be part of the team etc in a FYC thread. Then we have a community wide vote and those elected are in charge of the AGS project. If CW wants to be on this team I feel he should be given an automatic membership because he's the one who has been doing all the work, but it takes the burden off of being sole leader.

The elected team would then either run a community wide poll on the direction AGS should go in and then enforce the results, execute the actions, or we empower them the to make the decision on the direction of the engine without a community vote.

(Now let's watch people debate this idea 100 times)

Unless someone takes ownership of this project this will continue to go round and round in circles. You can't even get a consensus on doing a poll. Soon it will be lets do a poll to see if we should do a poll!

The problem we have is that there is no real leader, because CW is quite justifiably not wanting to take that role. So in this leaderless project everyone gets a say and no one is agreeing so it's becoming very circular. At some point someone has to say "We're doing a poll" instead of waiting for everyone to give their opinion about the bloody poll. Someone has to decide the poll results mean something instead of letting people say "Well I'm not sure we can let the future be decided by a few votes!" Because otherwise the poll will be a fruitless endeavour. There needs to be a leader, or leadership team who take the community into consideration but ultimately make the decision to poll members and then follow through on the results. Without that I think people will continue to disagree and we will be flip flopping here with no significant advancement.

Scavenger and Selmiak

It's a hard one this month. I feel almost unable to vote because of being in the IRC and knowing how hard everyone worked and seeing the quality of the titles. It's like Sophie's choice :~( I've played them all and there are some real gems this month.

Scavenger that's really cool! I really love that design! I think she's attractive. I think like Misj said beauty is subjective so really there can't be any objections to this lovely creation.

Edit:

I decided even though I don't really have much time I could scribble something over lunch to be a good sport. I'm not really an artist and I don't have any real time to spend on a design but regardless I present "Mushi".

Mushi is a mushroom girl who uses her spores to turn her victims into mindless drones.

I think the Sprite is 154px as I would generally work with a largish background, but I don't really know. Sox is the artist of Dropped Monocle Games, I'm just a writer who dabbles. I whipped this up on my iPad this afternoon when I took a break from dialog writing.

I still think Selmiak's knife nipple bitch is the clear front runner of all the designs though. I simply cannot compete with the elegance on that concept :'(

I too was not even slightly offended by the theme. I just believed you were mistaken when you said there are few attractive female villains and I stand by that. There are plenty. They are both sexy and attractive. Just because they are also sexy doesn't detract from their beauty which is what you seem to imply.

Now I understand you mean you want a non stereotypical female villain but have simply explained it a little poorly in your posts. That is a much more interesting topic. By saying attractive though you made the jam feel more restrictive and more stereotypical IMO. But it's never been me being offended by it. I was just pointing out with my images that there are plenty of attractive female villains.

I think it was a fair point to make as you were pretty adamant and defensive when it was brought up so I thought providing some evidence to counter that was helpful to the discussion.

Additionally as you were willing to address everyone else publicly I felt it strange you singled me out to PM. I wasn't offended but I prefer a public discussion where it can be moderated when one party in particular seems to be a bit more heated and invested in the issue.

But honestly there is no offense and understanding your intent I can see why you were getting frustrated that people were misunderstanding you. It's just a shame the first post was worded in a way that it did not adequately convey your intentions for the theme.

Misj thank you for the message. It's weird you sent it as a PM and that you seem to have taken the critiques of your theme so personally. It's not a critique of you, but you are mistaken when you claim attractive female villains are uncommon. I'm not going to be entering the jam because I'm busy and uninterested in participating for similar reasons to Cat.

All examples in my previous post were video game characters. Every single one.

Good luck with the jam!
