Thanks for the great comments guys.  I'll have an update soon.

thanks guys.Ã,  as long as I have to resubmit it anyway, maybe i'll work on it a bit more.
<edit> ok I replaced the original pic.  I worked it a bit more and added extraneous pixelage as you suggested.

a boat destined for far away shores. Photoshop and Pixia.
<edit> oops I guess I made mine the wrong resolution.Ã,  I'll change it later.

here's my witch/sorceress.  also a first.

ah, ok.  sorry I wasn't quite sure where to bring it up.

I would add a strong highlight to the hair. For resizing, I would just scale it down, then redraw the outline using the pencil tool.

I just wanted to suggest, regarding the online tut chapter on conversations:
for a total noob, it would be far less intimidating if it was divided into 2 parts, the first part being essentially the same, without the "goto dialog 1", then, when dialog 0 was finished, and functional, they could later go back and add dialog 1.

hi, I guess i'm not suprised that you guys get that impression.Ã,  i have done some fairly serious comic style art from time to time, using a brush and quill pen.Ã,  Sometimes I use a marvel stle, sometimes, more of a crumb style.Ã,  I've actually been experimenting with some alternatives, and right now I'm tending more towards a more freehand style.Ã,  anyway, thanks for the nice comments.Ã,  with any luck I'll have a funtioning update soon.
<edit> also i have a huge comic book collection.  I'm very into comics.

sorry about that, I have replaced it with a png.

Critics' Lounge / practice BG of sanitarium
Sun 03/10/2004 12:37:21
I made this mostly just to practice using an indexed pallette, but I am kind of toying with the idea of a game based on getting out of a sanitarium.Ã,  So, this is supposed to be the room where the patients go to get their pills.Ã,  I haven't added the animated elements yet, such as the hands of the clock, and the water from the drinking fountain.Ã,  also, I will try to make an animated nurse, and some glass, in the window. Any ideas on how I could improve it?Ã,

here's a radio render.  i use a program called blender for 3D stuff.  it is also a free program.

here's what i came up with for the shading.  are you sure you wouldn't prefer it with an interior light source?

I found this model at the 3D cafe.  It appears to be roughly the same make.

hi, if you could draw me a little diagram of where all your light sources are coming from, I would be happy to do an indoor lighting simulation on the computer, but right away I can suggest, that indoor lighting tends to be diffuse, and bounces around alot within a room, so most of the shadows happen in the edges and corners of the room, and also, the the sun coming through a window leaves a very distinct shadow (?).  Anyway, draw a diagram, and I'll simulate it using a sun lamp and radiosity in my 3D prgram.  I could also render in a volumetric halo, if you'd like, which would be the effect you'd get if the air had dust particles in it, and a shaft of light was coming through the window.  If there are lightbulbs in the room, indicate where they are, and at what direction the sunlight is coming from.

I would take the head of #1 and put it on the body of # 5.

this reminds me of the other day when i was at the pool and some girl got dunked by another kid,....the life gaurd stands there scratching his belly, apparently aware that the girl is going down,... ( she needs no help at this point, she is going under by herself ) so I, seeing this,...and also having some lifegaurding experience myself, went in and pulled her out.  her parents arrived on the scene as she was gasping and choking, and the lifegaurd is still looking on with a vacant stare.  It made me wonder if maybe the guy was just being paid to stand there holding a towel, or what?  I guess he didn't want to get wet.  What incompetance though,....not only can't you trust your kid alone in a hardware store,...you can't even trust them under the gaze of a lifegaurd in a pool.

hi, i made this model loosely based on your drawing.Ã,  i hope it helps. also i think some details might look nice on the dark side in the form of lighter colored lines representing edges, like of the doors and windows, or whatever.Ã,  gas cap maybe.
<edit> image replaced, see next page <edit>

Hi, one way to make the walls less plain:  select them by region with the magic wand tool, then go to a big brush, and hit them just slightly with some black or brown, at low opacity, especially in the corners.  You might want to give them some slight tonal variation relative to each other, depending upon the position of the light source.  also, I wanted to mention, that one of your sprites from the first page looks a bit flat backed from the side view.  making his shoulder blades protrude slightly past his arm might help this condition.
