loominous i think you can safely make with the new topic.  :=

i wasn't reffering to anyone specifically with my comment.Ã,  it is a trend that i have observed for some time.Ã,  many of these backgrounds don't seem to have alot of room for sprites, or to move about in.Ã,  this is my standard though, and i don't expect all participants to feel the same way, or for they who cast their votes to vote on anything other than what happens to suit their fancy.Ã,  such is the way with voting.

though this time the bottom is cut off of loominous's image, i can actually see most of it.  my vote is for loominous. i would like to comment ( rant ), however, that the backgrounds seem to be getting less backgroundy (spartan, ready to be filled with sprites) and more fleshed out, with what would ordinarily be accomplished with sprites.  i would like to ask that people be more true to the mission here.   these are supposed to be usable backgrounds, not illustrations, or full scenes.  :=

might as well...it looks as though opo may have forgotten about us.

it has nudity it's just subtle.

it's not a fancy joint, just an ordinary waterin' hole.

it seems that loominous has a bandwidth issue so i only saw the top couple of inches, but it looked like a pretty thoughtful composition from what i saw, and well executed, so that's who i will vote for.  it would be nice if i could see the whole thing though.

thanks man, and btw yours looks great, but, i only ever saw the top of it, and it seems to be slowly shrinking.  seems like maybe a bandwidth issue.

hey guys been awhile since i did the background blitz so here's my entry...if i get a chance i'll polish it up a bit before the deadline.

here's a tip on coloring:
if you start with a black outline drawing, when you go to color it, set your brush to 'darken'.  that way it won't affect anything darker than it, and since black is the darkest color there is, the black outlines will remain untouched.

looks great, but those edges are pretty jaggedy for 32 bit.

i think there's too much definition in the bricks.  i would break up those lines a bit.

it looks really good.  i like how you have variated the walls.  one thing i don't like is the blinds.  they look too jaggedy.  I would do them probably as a solid piece.

here's my tutorial  http://home.att.net/~zolgnar/grassyplane2.htm
it covers the making of: sky, distant mountains, and a grassy plane, and teaches you how to make an image pipe in GIMP.

the clouds and the trees appear to be back lit, so the hillside should be too.  the most light would be along the top edge.

Ok, I have updated the link on the first post.  Let me know what you think.  Sorry about the pages instead of one big page, but it's easier on dial-ups.  Or just click here.>>   http://home.att.net/~zolgnar/grassyplane2.htm
If it's deemed worthy I'll put it up in the tutorials section.

This is what I came up with today.  It's only slightly harder to make than the first one.  any thoughts?

I'm trying to be economical as far as the time i spend putting this together.  Since it is my first attempt at a game it will no doubt be buggy, and have a variety of other problems.  Making animation loops goes alot faster, because once you set up the character with a walk cycle, it takes about 2 minutes or less to make all 8 views of animation.  By the same token, I could spend more time on the 3D character, and actually get him to look quite like the picture, but I don't want to get too bogged down in any one thing, or this might end up on the shelf.

if i'm doing a scene that has lots of weird angles, a quick model in a 3D program sure can help to set things up.  in fact that's how i got sucked into 3D.  looking for a good way to do weird perspectives easily for my comics.
