Critics' Lounge / Re: Swamp theme for FPS
Wed 13/03/2013 18:54:31
The theme has a beautiful atmosphere, it fits the setting really well. Futuristic and swampy at the same time - not easy to balance, but you did a great job. :) Also, nice use of filters.
If anything, I'd give the drums a bit more variation instead of just fading them in and out. And if you want to build up more tension, some high pitched strings or synth sounds far in the background might help.

Thanks for your comment, Diamond. :)
I was going for a "busy yet relaxed" feeling for the city theme. It's a background music that will play for a longer time, so it had to be rather low key and blend with the background noise.

Wow, thank you very much!
I really enjoyed the other entries. Looking forward to listening to Viking's piece. :)
Thanks for judging, Diamond16. I'll post the next contest tomorrow.

Critics' Lounge / Music for "Conspirocracy"
Mon 11/03/2013 22:31:01
Hi Guys,
I want to share some of my latest work with you.
I've uploaded two tracks that I composed for KodiakBehr's lovely new game "Conspirocracy".

The first one is the background music for a typical city setting. If you look at some of the screenshots (especially the isometric view) you'll get the idea. For this preview, I mixed the music with background sounds, so this is what it should sound like in the final game:

The second track is intended for a short cutscene. I don't want to give away too much, but as the title says, it's about ascending a mountain  ;)

Any feedback for these tunes would be highly appreciated. Maybe I'll upload some more tracks later.

Here's my entry. It's quite short, because I was running out of time. But it was a very inspiring and challenging contest. I really enjoyed it, and most likely I'll expand my entry later.

My numbers were 6, 7, 9, 3, 2, 9, 6, 5, which translates to Gb, G, A, D, Db, A, Gb, F

Sorry for the delay. I have the flu and had to stay in bed most of the time.

Too bad there were no more entries.
Tamatic wins by default, but this is well-deserved. What a fantastic entry! Interesting sounds and buildup, I just love your style. The music fits the scene perfectly, very nice use of sound effects, a very detailed description, you even drew a storyboard... this is so much more than I expected.

Congratulations, tamatic!

Only 3 days left. Come on guys, I'm waiting for some nice entries! :)

Engine Development / Re: AGS engine Linux port

The demo works fine for me on Debian Wheezy 64 bit.  :)
Now the only thing that's missing is a linux equivalent to winsetup.exe, so you don't have to find and edit acsetup.cfg to switch between fullscreen and windowed mode. A basic setup tool would be a good idea if you want to distribute a commercial game this way.

If it has to be MIDI, you could try to create soundfonts from your recorded samples and play your MIDI file using a soundfont player. I guess there are several tools you can use to create a soundfont. For example there is a tool called "Viena" on http://www.synthfont.com/.

I'm not sure if I got you right, but why do want to create the MIDI score with a programming language? Wouldn't a sequencer software do it?

Aside from the minor perspective issues you mentioned I really like it. The style doesn't bother me at all, quite the contrary. It looks really unique and very polished, you use the two (or three) colours effectively. I'd love to play a game in that style.

One of the most interesting challenges in writing game music are the cut-scenes. So much can happen within just a few seconds, and it can be tricky to get the timing right and keep the music short enough.

This time you'll have to do a little bit more than composing a tune. Here's what I want you to do:

  • Make up a typical adventure game cutscene.
  • Compose a tune for your cutscene.
  • Post your tune along with a short description of the cutscene.
  • Make it short and dense. The maximum length is 1 minute.
  • No further restrictions, it can be any style and genre.
You could also take a cutscene from any existing adventure game and compose your own theme for it. You'll have to write a description nonetheless, because I might not have played that game.

You have two weeks, and I'll pick a winner on 7th February.

Happy composing!

Yay, thank you! ;-D This was a nice contest with great and very different entries by everyone.
I already have an idea for the next contest, so I'll post it soon.

And here's my entry. It's in 5/4 and it's a sad tune. Prime numbers are usually very lonely, because no one wants to divide them. ;)

Critics' Lounge / Re: Problem's music problems

Thank you for your comments, they are really helpful!
Yeah, the sound of this one is definitely worse, simply because it's older. Back in 2011 I was hired for a game that may or may not become commercial. Since then I've upgraded my equipment significantly and learnt a lot about mixing and mastering, so the first tracks I produced sound rather outdated compared to the newer ones. Anyway, development is on hold for that game. But in case it starts again, I guess I'll have to remaster the older tracks - your comment confirms that.  :)

Following tamatic's suggestions I shortened the ending of the scifi demo and made it loopable:

And here's another track I'd like to share. The fades are intended. I composed this for a project that might become commercial, so I can't give away the complete track. Still I'd like to get some feedback.

Critics' Lounge / Re: My first 8-bit tune
Sun 30/12/2012 09:17:47
This sounds very nice! It definitely has that special 8-Bit feeling, though I'm no expert on NES sounds.
I'd probably use more diverse sounds for melody and accompaniment, as this is what I like better in the original version. The mood is actually very different. The original version sounds very low key and depressing, while the remix almost has a baroque feel to it.

Thank you very much, Diamond16!  :)
I suppose your comment refers to the first two tracks? I should probably update the first post and add all the other tracks I posted later in this thread.
