Thanks for the help Radiant! It's much appreciated. But now I need to get my Java back, and I can't download it.
#342
Of course, I should have done that first.

Also, can I use my old Gateway floppy drive with my Dell? And can I use the old RAM I had too?

General Discussion / My computer needs help!
Sun 25/11/2007 18:38:09
OK, here's what happened:

I got this program called Duplicate File Finder to find, well, duplicated files. Now, the program skips all important folders and files, like the Windows folder, i386 folder, so on...

I scanned my computer, and voila! I now had 19 GB returned to me... at a price I didn't know about.

I restarted my computer after, and after the BIOS loaded up, I got this error:

NTLDR is missing
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

That's it. I couldn't even get into Windows! So, I had a friend come over and we used a re installation CD provided by Dell (:() to get it up and going again. Now, I can log in and out and do some stuff, but lots of programs have missing filepaths, and IE cannot go to more than two pages without giving me a runtime error. Firefox shows this:

Picture

Also, in Firefox, if I go to java.com and try to verify my installation, it freezes. Same if I go to Windows Update on Firefox.

I tried this tool that came with this PC called Dell Driver Reset, and it tells me that there is a "problem with the BIOS", so when I hit OK to fix it, it says "problem solved!" but if I try it again, it still tells me that there is a problem with the BIOS!

Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm thinking about installing my old floppy drive, and making a Boot Install disk to get back my drivers, if that's the problem. Please help if possible! I can't lose all the stuff on here, I need it for school!

Yahtzee has done it again. Once again, I am mesmerized by his work.

Actually R4l? People said they liked the change on my style and I changed it. And by the way there is scaling you know? If you insist on your idea about my style check the forums a little back.

I like the theme a lot. Looks pretty simular to my style way back when I was a pixel-addict. but to begin with, I would suggest you stay off the filters. On pixels they tend to make the picture flat. And the perspective is off, I would suggest you read a bit about the subject. Other than that, I can't wait to see the result :-)

Can someone be definite about my art skills? Are they good enough to make you wanna play the game or should I hire someone else?

Sorry, I didn't mean to sound harsh there, please don't get the wrong idea.

About the character scaling; it's still going to look weird. That character will look very ugly in-game with scaling. I'm not saying that she looks bad, I'm just saying that maybe she's a little too big, but then again, it is your style, and I have no right to judge...

...but this is the Critics Lounge you know.

Also, I didn't say your work was crap, but I gave you the same suggestions as not with a bang:

QuoteI really like the backgrounds, particularly the top one.  The use of color is pretty arresting throughout all of them, although the perspective is a little wonky towards the top of the middle one (it seems to lose consistency with the bottom 2/3 of the picture).

Here's a suggestion, which I had suggested as well, but it seems that you got offended somehow.

QuoteAs for the characters, they look interesting, but I'm not sure how well they fit in with the backgrounds.

Again, same thing...

It was stupid of me to say that you stuck with your old style, which isn't true at all; these backgrounds are very nice Dualnames, but when I read your post it seemed like you were offended by my suggestions. I am entitled to an opinion, and you are the one asking for them.

It seems that you are still sticking to your original style, which isn't bad, but people have given you suggestions before and you seem to be disregarding all suggestions.

I think you should work on your perspective a little, and try to make your lines cleaner. The characters seem out of proportion; you have the woman who is huge compared to the guy with the knife, and seeing them in-game would seem very abnormal.

That is so cruel... that man should die for that.

Oh man, I remember that game. I hated it with a passion! Glad I bought Doom II over it.  :)

The music is always the 2nd thing to catch me, but I only ignore it if it's annoying and repetitive. I have a game thats only for Xbox (old game) and the graphics aren't the best, but the first thing that got me was the music. It's composed very nicely, and each track is epic.

I think letters should have more flair, so people know they are letters.

Is Victor your real name? You could have the big V, and ictor in smaller letters next to it. It would look nice IMO.

Very nice! I don't see any thing that needs to be changed really.

I don't know why, but I have a habit or right-clicking. I HAVE to listen to music too, or else it feels off.

I live off the internet. I get my Frets On Fire songs and mods, check here a lot, go on my myspace, check my mail, play WarRock for a bit, and thats about it. 4chan is a ritual for me. I HAVE to go there daily.  :o

The actual perspective seems wrong for an adventure game. Is this for a cutscene?

Anyway, looks pretty good! Main character has a nice old disney cartoon feel to it.
#357
Why not just use Doom Legacy?

Ah, Crimson Room! A favorite! I escaped from there so long ago!

I made a game just like that. I used arrows on the sides of the screen to transfer to another wall of the room, or to go up to an object.

That was long ago... :D

DOSBox is the way to go. I'm playing QFG1 now! :D

You want to make a game like Guitar Hero?

That would require being able to get MIDI tracks, like Lead and Bass, and find the BPM and such.

Guitar Hero uses a grid on the fretboard to make out the BPM. The closer each line is, the higher the BPM, meaning less Hammer Ons and Pull Offs, and more notes that have to be strummed.

Frets on Fire uses Audio/Video delay to sync up the notes and the music. As OneDollar said, Frets on Fire uses ogg files for song backing tracks.

Sorry, I'm very addicted to Guitar Hero and Frets on Fire, as I play them both at least 5 hours a day.  :)

Only ever heard of Guitar Hero in the UK, but I've just tried out Frets On Fire and it's fantastic.  There goes the rest of my spare time..

With extra mods and other features, you can have the best open-source Guitar Hero based game ever.
