Critics' Lounge / Re: Isometric walkcycle

I think 4 or 8 frames would be a better option.  For 4 frames, aim for "left foot: back/down, right foot front/down (/\)", "left: up/moving forward, right down/center (|>)" and the opposite of those.  Four frames allows for all the extremes, whereas 8 allows for subtle blending/adding character.  Even numbers also lets you mirror images very easily; five seems like an awful lot more work than necessary.  As it is, it looks to me like the character is going down a flight of stairs.  Are those the 5 frames in a row in your last post?  I think parts 2 and 3 (5+1) are too similar to warrant another image, when you could take a halfway point and jazz the timing to suit.

I've always loved walk cycles.  I've no idea why.  However, I've always been of the belief that it would be better to stick figure sketch a personal walk cycle per character than try to mimic someone else's.  Have theirs (and several others playing in the background) and get a feel for your character.  Once you have the feel in you head, pick the opposite extremes only, and time it.  Once you feel it fits your vision, fill in the 50% gaps.  After that, rinse and repeat until you've got the level of detail needed.

I agree on the head bob issue mentioned before; I'm not even sure it would need any at that angle/resolution/character height.  If the head does bob, the shoulders should too - it'll be the hips that vary the height (legs straight vs. legs diagonal). Also agreeing on the arm length.  I'd really like to see one of the diagonal walks.

Roof alone:

Step 1.  Count the colors on the 3D (eyeball it).  I can see at least 3 that blend from left to right, and another 1 used as a shadow for under the tiles.

Step 2.  Count the colors on the 2D version.  Two.

Step 3.  Add more variation to the 2D version, even so much as air brushing a gradient over the area from light to dark (left to right).

Step 4.  Pick something other than the roof, rinse and repeat 1-3 as appropriate.

I have been working at Blender, and I do understand the power of the program. But I am making frustratingly slow progress.

Have a search for BlenderCookie/CGCookie's tutorials.  Especially David Ward's ones.  They're easy to understand and will get you to an intermediate level quickly.

Wasn't there a program that ripped LucasArts sprites in their entirety?

It would seem that my medication will not have been prescribed in time, and even if it happened tomorrow, it wouldn't have had time to kick in.  Ergo, you can all feel a sense of relief at my lack of attendance.  I'll likely still donate in the next week, as I'd said I would.  Despite my absence, I thoroughly approve of the concept.  I'm just, you know, bat-shit fucking crazy.

I hope y'all enjoy it as much as I would have.

Critics' Lounge / Re: Troubling perspectives

I'm mostly with Khris on this one.  Admittedly, I'd Personally call it 3-point perspective (left/right/bottom as opposed to a horizon line).  The idea of the short distance between edges baffles me, as the camera is so close to the item; it would only be inperceptible if was on the other side of the room (at the correct angle).

Whilst I'm all for bending the rules when it comes to perspective, I think you need to re-evaluate how well versed your tutor in the subject was.  Anything up to GCSE level (in my day, 15+ years ago) and they were more interested in art history, grades and copying images without understanding them than actually learning the fundamentals.

I always wanted to learn things like color theory or how light reflected, and they were always more interested in telling me what the artist who painted that semi-famous things favorite food was or getting me to trace images from a book.  Moral?  Most art teachers can't be trusted; it's better to re-learn everything from other sources.

More than likely, aye.  I was trying to channel Jeremy Clarkson, badly.  I should probably wait for him to die first.

British Ford models of cars I can think of:
Capri, Cortina, Escort, Fiesta, Mondeo, Ka, Granada, Orion (?), Galaxy (short lived), Focus, Sierra, (XR2, XR3, XR3i, XR4 Cosworth - boy racer types).  I'm not sure about the Prefect era, I think there was also a Poplar in that area.

Vauxhall was a brand/make, that made the Astra, Nova and others.  It was the British version of the Opal.

For Korean cars, I'd assume Kia, Hyundai, Proton and Prius?  Daihatsu, maybe?

I'm entirely lost on US states (despite knowing them all, I don't know what would be popular) and the only bean I can thing of is an Legume (LilGryphMaster?)

I can't help but hope you're just delayed in adding the next round and not spending ages trying to dumb this down for us, only to have us solve it in minutes.

There was also the Dover, which was then transposed to the US.  That said, I'm supposedly British and it didn't help me at all on that, I'd have guessed a Cinque port would've been French.  Sleepless in Seattle's is fairly contemporary, and I didn't know that one, either.  I like how people are pooling knowledge together to come up with an answer, so I approve of the difficulty level so far.

Spoiler

Conflagration's a big fire, and judging by the year, I figured Atlanta, Georgia due to Gone with the Wind.  I admit I ended up Googling the movie to check which year it was set.

The only Lear I know is Shakespeare's king, and I don't have a clue who was in it.

I have no clue what to do with that, at all.  Not even remotely.

With regards to the large shadowing on the grass, have you tried other dithering patterns (ie, 25%/75% and vice versa)?  That could hoof up the shading possibilities (for everything) whilst keeping the same color limit.  It currently looks (to me) a bit too harsh a transition from shaded to unshaded, and without a defined artificial light source, it would be unlikely to see such bold shadow shapes at night.
