What's an Hourgame competition?
The purpose of Hourgame Saturday is to encourage amateur game-making, or to put it bluntly, to make you plant your ass in your chair and finally make something.
In this activity your task is to make an AGS game within a strict and very short deadline (i.e. one hour).

When will it take place?
This Hourgame session will take place on Saturday 7th August 2010. Starting at 19:00 BST (14:00 New York, 20:00 Johannesburg) participants will have an hour to make their games + 15 minutes to beta test / upload (i.e. the deadline is 20:15 BST).

How do I participate?
A theme is set by the previous week's winner and by the contest's host in event of his/her absence. It will be announced on IRC (3 simple steps to IRC) and here.

Why should I participate?
Because it's FUN!
Research shows that Hourgames get the creative juices going and will aid for healthier game building skills.

Additional info:
- While it is not forbidden for the theme-setters to participate in the activity, their games cannot be voted for (to prevent accusations of cheating and to discourage regular participation).
- Instead, theme-setters are encouraged to draw trophies for the contest's winners.
- Making your game from scratch is strongly encouraged, though it is not forbidden to use music or artwork from public sources if you are allowed to (e.g. using public domain music tracks in your game is OK, but not really necessary). It is also possible to use a pre-existing AGS template for your game (e.g. the Verb-Coin GUI template).
- You cannot use stuff you've made earlier, because this competition is about making something new.
- You are allowed to use previous Hoursongs (Should we create a list somewhere?).

Camwhoring:
If you have Camtasia or Camtasia-esque software, it would be great to see your "Making of"! Or blog about it, or just open Notepad, do something! No twittering.

Uploading:
Suggested hosts to upload your entry to are:

TerranRich's ShutUpload
DropBox (Recommended by Magma42, referral link)

In honor of M. Night Shymalan's birthday yesterday, this week's theme is...

THE ABSURD TWIST ENDING

Voting:
Just tell us your favourite game. You don't have to enter to vote!
(If you want to tell us what you liked and disliked about all the entries, that would be super nice of you!)
After all games are in you are encouraged to vote, again, you don't have to enter to vote. Voting closes the next Saturday (August 14)

Please post below if you're interested in participating, if the change in time will/won't work for you, or if you have any other questions.

If you are unable to make the scheduled time, but wish to participate anyway, say so in this thread and we can work out a scheduled hour at your convenience to make your submission (Earlier that day for instance).

Hope to see you there!

I personally recommend DropBox, and not least of all because, by clicking on that referral link, you and I can both get an additional 250mb free storage in addition to the 2gb you get by default. I use it, as do all people I respect and admire.

This hourgame session will take place on Saturday April 3, 2010. Per requests last week, the time has changed. Starting at 16:00 GMT (12:00 EST, 09:00 PDT) participants will have an hour to make their games + 15 minutes to beta test / upload (i.e. the deadline is 17:15 GMT).

The voting will end when all the entrants have voted, or on Wednesday, April 7, whichever comes sooner.

Please post below if you're interested in participating, if the change in time will/won't work for you, or if you have any other questions. There will be a trophy for the winner this week, so be sure to compete for the inspiring glory of 48 by 48 pixels of animated gif-ness.

So, because I can't be trusted to know what time it is and showed up late to my own party, the theme is/was "Where is Magma?" And the winner will receive the coveted "Where is Magma" Trophy seen below.

I'm having a hard time trying to create an inventory bar at the bottom of the screen, and I have no idea why. Have the GUI and the inventory window set up, I think, but for some reason I can't seem to interact with it, or rather can't in the way I think.

Interface is set up using the BASS module from here such that left clicking on the item should make it the active inventory item to use and right clicking will look at it. Right clicking does what it's supposed to, but left clicking does not.

Here's where I'm getting confounded really, I've tried debugging and setting a break-point in On_Mouse_Click in the GlobalScript file, and the damn thing it that, while the break does stop the debugger while clicking around the room, it does nothing when clicking on the inventory bar. In fact, having commented everything out of the On_Mouse_Click function, I can still right click on the item and look at it, but not select it.

I'm sure I know what command to use (player.ActiveInventory=the item I'm clicking on in the inventory window, I think) but mainly, due to an inability to understand how I'm managing to right-click and look at things in my inventory when, as far as I can tell, clicking at all shouldn't do anything, I have no idea where to put it.

So the idea is that I want a bar at the bottom of the screen with the inventory in it that appears and disappears off the bottom of the screen whenever the mouse is on it, like in Broken Sword frinstance. What I've got is basically a little script in the repeatedly_execute() function that reads as follows:
Code: ags
if (mouse.y > 549) {
    if (gInv.Y > 549) {
      gInv.Visible = true;
      gInv.Y-=5;
    } else {
      gInv.Y = 549;
    }
  } else {
    if (gInv.Y < 599) {
      gInv.Y+=5;
    } else {
      gInv.Y = 599;
      gInv.Visible = false;
    }
  }

(For clarification, the game is in 800x600 resolution)

Now this works fine, but seems... I dunno, unnecessarily absurd to me? Is Inelegant the word I'm looking for? Anyway it seems to me (and bear in mind I am an imbecile) that there just has to be a better way than this to accomplish something as simple as this, and I just wanted to ask, is there?

Hi, I'm new to this and keen to learn, and I'm sure there's an easy answer to this that I just don't know yet, so apologies if its painfully obvious.

How should I code it such that interacting with a hotspot or talking to an NPC moves the player character to the WalkToPoint, but keeping the mouse active such that, say, I change my mind mid-stroll and want to walk somewhere else or open the inventory or something, I can still do that.

I tried: "cEgo.Walk(200, 300, eBlock, eWalkableAreas);" in the room event code, duplicating the effect of just setting the WalkToPoint, which turns the mouse into the wait cursor, so I tried changing it to 'eNoBlock', but then ego isnt walking long enough to even turn around before the rest of the script executes.

Ideally, clicking interact anywhere in the hotspot will produce the effect of clicking the WalkTo cursor on (200, 300), then, when reaching it, executing the remainder of the script, and I can't tell if this is a really simple thing to change or a really complicated one.
