General Discussion / Re: Hurricane Wilma

It's God's retribution for who you voted for last year. Didn't you know that God is a Democrat?  :=

There's still another six weeks left of hurricane season, too and they're already onto greek letters, having run out of Roman alphabet. You really need to start worrying when they get on to Hurricane Tav, though...

I experiemnted with compressing various popular AGS titles with different compression programs and found that 7zip gave the best on average.

If we charged a nominal fee for ads, then we could make a profit, discourage peopel from posting these things unless they really meant it, and completely prohibit the under-18s altogether! Yay!

However, young men are the demographic group most likely to be mugged.

scotch downloaded my game folder and tried it on his system and couldn't reproduce this issue either. Interestingly enough, I have dual GeForce 6600 GTs...

Let me try it on the other computer i have on my desk...

Hmm, other computer doesn't seem to have this problem. Dorcan, can you post your system specs, please, so we can see if there's a common theme?

I installed the latest video drivers and that doesn't seem to help. Also, the same problem occurs when the AGS game crashes: it displays the dialog telling me the script line and call stack and that I referenced a null pointer, then i hit OK and the  program is still in the taskbar. I can use AGS up to the point where I try and test the game, where I have to go and kill off the old prog before I can go further.

Well, the computer is only 4 weeks old, has McAfee giving it a clean bill of health, ditto with MS AntiSpyware, Spybot, AdAware.

Other factors:

I'm using the module manager to edit a module, then I leave the module manager and hit CTRL-T

I've only tried Windowed, but my whole computer was acting weird yesterday (the 3d text screensaver was glitching all over and everything was very slow) and it hasn't happened yet today, since a reboot. It may be that some things were installed that "required a reboot" and the reboot was postponed causing somethign odd in the system, but I'll update if it comes up again today.

heh, 30 second later i see its doing it again...

When the AGS game is closed with the Windows X button, the window disappears from the screen, but the Taskbar thing is stil there. I can minimise and restore it still, and the zooming effect occurs back and forth, but the window is zero size, without even a titlebar.

Well, the problem is that:

a) People read GiP threads, but you're not allowed to post hardly-formed stuff there, so if you need to recruit background artists you can't post screenshots...

b) I don't think anyone EVER read ACR or OYS, really, as we've already been through various iterations of these threads already

c) We don't want people clogging up Gen Gen or ARTC or GiP with recruitment threads

Anyway, team games never work. How many team games are released? Even including the team competition, you can count them on one hand. Most successful collaborations are for one aspect, usually music which can be more disconnected from the rest of the process anyway until CJ implements iMuse.

The only teams that work are ones where there is already a relationship going (e.g. Herculean effort!) And so maybe these threads are unnecessary anyway. If they were banned altogether though, maybe people would just post in Gen Gen anyway, so lets keep them and use them as a bit bucket

Umm, its even simpler than that. You dont need a walkable area if you just do

player.Y=400;

or something like that.

You'll need to move him back onto a walkable area though before returning control to the player.

You coudl try and use the debug stuff of hitting the "`" key and seeing games events or using Scroll Lock and single-stepping through code with left-shift to see which lines of code are executed... this might throw some light on things.
#3351
You can also use the script function SetObjectIgnoreWalkbehinds, or in 2.7+ set Object.IgnoreWalkbehinds to true

global int blah;

which saves you from putting the import lines in the header (but then you cannot be sure if some variables are global just by looking at the header).

But of course, keep the old "export" and "import" functionalities unchanged, for compatibilities, and that we sometimes need only the variables accessible in one or two rooms, not all.

Well, you would change it to ONLY have the import in the header, delteing the export requirement at all rather than the other way around, I think. And yes, this would be in addition to any existing functionality for backward compatibility

But there are still plenty of places like porn sites and pay-at-pump petrol stations where all you need is the card number, no questions asked.

Hah! So you admit it, you dirty old man! You could only know this if you yourself indulge in the filthy habit of:

filling a car with petrol

There is redundancy and a bit of hassle in the current system of having the declaration and export of varaibles done separately:

Code: ags

int my_long_variable_name_that_i_might_type_wrong;
export my_long_variable_name_that_i_might_type_wrong;

wouldn't it be possible to add a new mechanism where you can just do:

Code: ags

exporting int my_long_variable_name_that_i_might_type_wrong;

or some other syntax, I'm not fussy  ;)

Since hums are often due to mains-powered electronic equipment, you can often do better on a battery-power recording device than on a plug-in one.

Para mi, la sitio tiene una buena vista: que es la problema?

in other words: looks good to me, I can't see a problem!

Interestingly, pseudo random number generators almost never generate very unlikely patterns such as 1000 instances of the sdame number in a row. However, a TRUE random number generator can generate such patterns. Hence, tetris games shoudl always be playabel forever in theory, as only the correct, highly unlikely,  pattern of S and Z pieces can make the "perfect" tetris player lose.

I wouldn't be surprised if a girl didn't mind some "experimentation" like this in the privacy of their own place, but was really pissed off by the guy then boasting about it to his mates on the internet...

I think Rich should be more careful about this: even if she is fine about it now, if she changes her mind later at any point then he's putting himself at risk. If I were him I'd ask a moderator to delet the whole thread ASAP. But then, I'd never have done that in the first place...

Of course, it could be a pile of rubbish from either Terran or his g/f as Eldkatt says. If the former, then its in very poor taste. If the latter then zing! pwned Terran. Either way, it makes Rich look pretty bad.

Chip and PIN reduced card fraud by 80% when introduced in France. The jury's still out here. I think the main reason it's better is social rather than technological: the security check is AUTOMATIC and therefore cannot be skipped by a till operator in a rush and also there is no feeling bad about suggesting someone is a criminal by saying "THat doesn't look the same": the blame is on the computer and so the till operator feels less like an accuser (and less like someone holding up the queue).

The 1991 Smoke Detectors Act, requires that all new houses that have been built since 1992 must, by law, have a smoke detector installed. The minimum requirement being one smoke alarm on each level of the building.

Older houses are not covered by the legislation, however, your house insurance may require that you have smoke detectors and not pay out if you don't. Not to mention the possibility of being prosecuted for negligence in the event of a fire where someone is hurt.

Banks have sophisticated analysis programs that detect potentially fraudulent transactions, which is why they sometimes ask for extra checks from retailers. Retailers sometimes just ignore these requests, though...
