I think Other Worlds did have a low profile on these forums and hadn't been pimped here. Here's my suppositions as to why maybe it hadn't got a buzz about it:

1. It hadn't had a build up beforehand. Now, Cirque de Zale didn't either, it also "just appeared" on the forums but the difference was:

2. Other Worlds' screenshots don't sell the game. Now, this is no fault of alkis, but 90% of AGS games that have sprite-type characters over photographic backgrounds are crap. OW and EEF are the only really good examples I can think of. Cirque, on the other hand, looked just like a classic Lucas game, and that look is very popular around here.

3. More on the build-up: many games generate their best buzz not from their GiP thread, which can tend to be drowned out by dross, but rather by the Critics Lounge (2nd most popular board on AGS, remember) on background, animations, etc.

4. You released at the end of the year, while 7DAS, A2, CdZ were all earlier, so had time to build up a fan base. While year-end-releases benfit Oscar candidates, it does tend to hinder AGS games. Also, the game-of-the-month feature had ToaK and CdZ. And BJ3, A2, ToaK and 7DAS had "big name" AGSers behind them.

5. You had a good review on JA+ which some people will see as a big minus, 'cause they hate JA+

EDIT:

6. Kinoko is female which will automatic double all interest on the forums in anyone's game. See also Ola's PoE and Dart's involvement in ToaK. Or maybe its just that females are on avearge twice as good at making games?  ;)

EDIT 2: re-reading that edit makes it look really sexist, actually. I don't want to imply that CdZ only got interest becuase of the gender of the author. It's a really great game!

Maybe this thread's top post and the website should both have a link to Send Dart a PM maybe?

AS the old saying goes:

Any program always has at least one redundant line of code and at least one bug, therefore, all programs can ultimately be reduced to one line that doesn't work.

Pixel Hunt: 687

FOY Demo (last time I looked, in January probably bigger by now) : 1960

AOTS Demo: 988

Of course, Pixel Hunt has a bunch of stuff in the new script module system, which should make for better organisation all round.

General Discussion / The not-FOREGOs
Tue 15/03/2005 15:37:08
OK, since my successors as FOREGO admins haven't got their act together, why not just lets do it in a thread. If someone really wants they can add up the noms. I'm not even going to bother looking up the categories: these things were memorable for me in 2004:

CJ's best deed: 2.7 beta and all its goodies
CJ's second best deed: The April Fool's thread
Best n00b: strazer... yes its hard to believed he only registered in 2004
Best avatar: My kicking baby one!
Best troll: poop666 or whatever number he is
Best mod: strazer for all the tracker stuff
Best Gen-Gen contributer: DG for all the BA pics
Most awaited release that failed to materialize: FoY demo, and I was working on it, too

Maybe a commitee could split all games between them and each committee members is trusted to put any game with merit in a category into a Long List for each category. Then the nom process gets joe public to shorten the long list to a short list and then final vote? I believe the booker prize works somewhat like this

Why do we need a thread for the submissions? We have the games database! It has a demo category already. Maybe it needs an hour game category too, but its perfectly capable of doing the job. If someone doesn't submit their game to the database then that's their own lookout. If we make it clear NOW that that is required for entry to AGS Awards then no-one can complain about last minute problems, becuas ethe games database is open all year.

And if someone ELSE wants to add Yahtzee's games to the database, let 'em
#3710
I understand how you feel. I had hoped (not expected) that Awakening of the Sphinx might have had a chance in the Best Demo category. I also understand, though, that trawling through the GiP forum to find all the demos would be a pain. I really think that future AGS awards should be restricted to those entered in the AGS games database pages which would make compiling the list much easier, or even automatic. If people know in advance, there's no reason why they shouldn't be able to make sure their games are in the database by a couple of weeks into January each year.

I also agree with Radiant about giving specific puzzles as examples, etc. This has obviously worked in the character categories to an extent.

Another award for next year might be the best script module: now that 2.7 will support them! Maybe that will be clearer than best scripting, or there could even be a best open-source AGS game award, too?

When I did the foregos last year (dart, hotspot what happened this year?) if there were people who had way mor enominations than everyone else, i put them in the final vote. That meant that some categories had 3 choices some had 7 but it meant that no-one missed out on a nom when they had 10 nominations and the avergae was 2

How about amking your game run full screen but making it LOOK like its running in a window  ;)

if a human can recognize the distiction between a male and female voice, than so can a turing machine.  if a human can synthesize a sound that can be represented in digital form, than so can a turing machine.  there's nothing theoretically stopping perfect synthesis of words from text by a computer.  if the distinction between male and female can be determined, then the change can also be made...this isn't even debatable!  I'm not saying we have this technology now or that we ever will.

By your logic, if a human can recognise the 'distiction' between fellatio and cunnilingus, then my computer should be giving me free blowjobs as we speak.

technology is nearly there

Maybe you were thinking CJ would be adding switch/case constructs to the AGS langauge  :=
#3715
Obviously, Peter, just save the game before you tell your parents, and if they take it bad, restore and try a different approach.

In fact, why not do that with the gay orgy, too...?

If life were an adventure game, it would be so much easier...
#3716
Well, of course, 100 overlays would make the game run like a tortoise...
#3717
Now is the moment to tell your parents.... "the good news is, my HIV test is negative, the bad news is I'm an evil spawn of santa who sodomizes" they'll be overjoyed, too!  ;D

Just assume the persona of Alexander Zale and you should be alright  :=

Surely sorting the results into alphabetical order, even if there are typos, will make the counting a lot easier?
