Science does the exact opposite; it assumes that there is an actual reality and that a well-established concept such as the mechanism causing light being emitted by gas inside a light bulb won't suddenly stop being valid.

Most light from light bulbs is emitted by the phosphor or the filament, but I'm sure your grasp of science is awesome  ;D

Self-referential jokes about "how nostalgia threads on the forums aren't as good as they used to be" aren't as good as they used to be.

Even the lower dieties included.

Dieties? Like Dr Atkins?

But if something is unproven rather than known to be wrong, then it can't be senseless to worry about it.

For example, I can't prove that anyone would ever try and break into my house. It has never been attempted so far. However, its a possibility so I lock my door and activate the alarm.

Atheism isn't a belief system, it's about not believing in something without evidence, the very opposite of what followers of a belief system do.

And Atheism doesn't instill senseless guilt into innocent children.

Ah, but it can only be senseless if you believe there isn't a god. As opposed to not believeing there is a god. Your statements are self contradictory and it comes back to the old thing that most evangelistic (ie..the kidn that would argue on an internet forum ;) ) athiests claim that athiesm is not a belief system but then claim that religion is senseless or evil or wrong which requires a belief...

You'll probably deny this, which just proves my point.  :=

Which religions are officially recognised by ghosts for making your blessed area? Does FSM count?

Of course Stalin was a bigger monster in some ways than Hitler and he was definately an athiest....

Unfortuantely, if CJ can prove "prior art", i.e. he did it first, then your patent is worthless...  ;D

Does AGS use the %CSIDL_DEFAULT_MYDOCUMENTS% variable to determine the location, as this should be langauge-independent?

My work have banned all game sites :( Fortunately, they haven't yet realised that adventuregamestudio.co.uk is such a thing :)

Well, I think the title of this thread has been conclusively disproved.

There's a pretty good Op-Ed by Robert Wright in The New York Times this weekend which proposes a kind of consensus world-view that is acceptable to the scientifically inclined and compatible both with rationalistic materialism and at least with a deist notion of a creator god.

Of course, the whole idea of memes came from Dawkins to start with and one has to recongnise that the natural selection of memes demostrates that religion is a pretty powerful meme, although so is science. Let's agree to come back to the argument in another 2000 years and see what has changed...  ;D

General Discussion / Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi
Mon 24/08/2009 11:22:40
I've been hearing that some Americans are starting up a "Freedom Fries"-like campaign where they are going to boycott Scotland becuase of the release of the terminally ill convicted Lockerbie Pan-Am flight bomber al-Megrahi. So, I was wondering, particularly from US AGSers:

1. Do you feel anger towards Scotland and should it be punished for letting a convicted terrorist free?
2. Does the fact that many Scottish relatives of those who died think that al-Megrahi didn't actually do it make any difference?
3. Do you think anyone should ever be released on compassionate grounds?
4. If a US citizen is imprisoned abroad (e.g. the lady caught "en flagrante" on the beach in Dubai) , would you support the goverment trying to get them repartiated, perhaps to serve out their term in a US prison?
5. If something is the right thing to do, does a bunch of Libyans turning al-Megrahi in to a hero on his return change its rightness?

Spoiler

I find its usually best to express these things as "I" messages:

I wanted more of her attention
I didn't like cleaning up her pyjamas
I want that she stays over more

rather than to make the assumption that any of my desires not being met is due to an emotion or lack of emtion on another person's part.

Monkey, which infallible scientists should we believe about things which scientists disagree about? e.g. Global warming, The Monty Hall problem, Cold fusion, Were dinosaurs hot or cold blooded, etc.

You keep going on about "the track record of science" but I don't think microbiology made much impact on the development of my MP3 player in the same way that Alan Turing didn't contribute a great deal to the discovery of DNA. The fact that many scientists wrote to Marilyn vos Savant to tell her she was wrong when she published the correct answer in a column shows that many scientists only have a narrow area of expertise. You seem to think that knowing about any area of science at all qualifies  someone in philosophy, quantum physics, palentology, ancient hebrew, exegesis, microbiology, chemistry, etc. etc.

I thought this thread was just about Nacho trying to get his post count as high as mine...  ;D

Hmm, what I actually really wanted was a reflective, wobbly surface of the water but only taking up a small part of the screen (e..g. in a fountain thats part of the background)
#397
Is it possible to run this effect on only a small area?

NHS is great for people with chronic illnesses that aren't their fault (which seems to be the opposite of what the US people think). e.g. my wife has Type 1 diabetes and so gets all her treatment for that completely free and all other prescriptions, too. Pregnant women get free prescriptions too, and free dental (since babies can drain the calcium from a mother) and that lasts until 1 year after the birth of the child whether the child survives or not. Now, I'd like to know how someone with Type 1 diabetes would get by in the US witout spending a fortune.

Doe the same happen with SayBackground?

Actually, a funny story: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/08/12/hawking_british_and_alive/

Some US rag claimed "If Stephen Hawking were British he'd be dead already because of the NHS". Well, actually, he is British and he's alive and he's been treated by the NHS.
