It's more subtle racism that I fear the most... things like the UK Independence Party, AKA Don't let the Krauts and Froggies (French) run England. And this anti-European agenda is prevalent throughout the UK Mass Media and is infecting other European countries too.

But althoguh stuh505 has spouted a lot of rubbish, affirmative action is racist. IN the UK there is the "Equal Opportunites Commision" apparantly they recieve more complaints from men than from women about sexism "This isn't why we were set up" one representative bemoaned. OF COURSE IT IS, F00, you can't promote equality for some and not for others...! On the otehr hand, NOT doing affirmative action might also be racist simply by promoting the racist status quo. Finding the perfect middle ground is impossible, but we shoudl try and get as close as we can.

The Labour party forced a percanetage of its election candidates to be female for a while,, but I think they had to drop it.. it is unfair on some excellent men candidates who missed out, but then it has increased the female percentage of MPs to something like 10%.

I've been to Auchwitz-Birkenau and I cried when I was there.

But if you can't poke fun at the things you despise, what can you poke fun at? After all, it was a Jew who wrote "The Producers", and you don't get much more close-to-the-bone Hitler jokes than that.

They say its becuase AGS is closed-source... Yeah, like SCUMM was open-source was it?

Firstly,

Extra interactions for characters (or alternately, on_event calls or somesuch):

Before Speaking and
After Speaking

this would make it easy to run a little animation, etc. before (or after) a character spoke. FOr example, if you're talking to a wheezy old man, he might (randomly) have a coughing fit or spit before he speaks. Obviously, you can do this in scripting OK, but not during dialogs, without lots of run-scripts...

Secondly:

on_event global function to be called separately for Enter_Room_Before_Fadein and Enter_Room_After_FadeIn. Currently, it only gets called once, and I'm not entirely sure if it is before or after fadein.

Next, to make the old Unhandled Event stuff a bit more sophisticated, how about a function like:

int GetHotspotHeight(int hotsspotnum)... returns the height in pixels of the hotspot. That way, your unhandled event can give a different message depending on how big the hotspot is. Ditto for objects, characters, etc.

If I remove an interaction from a room (i.e. I had a hotspot that was set to RunScript on each interaction) and then I change the interactions so they no longer run script, what is the situation with the hotspotX_a, hotspotX_b functions in the room script: can I delete them? What about the corresponding #sectionstart lines? Ditto with room_* and object_* functions?

You could make an Insta-Game .agt file template... that would make it even easier to use.

It gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "digital music"

I'm the first to poke fun at Vel, and I'm glad to read The Monthly Roger, but I think that anyone who prefers the last TMR to the last Ezine has to be a little bit biased (or alternately, silly). TMR is "playing catch-up" as so many sports commentators say

The idea with QQQ would have been much more interesting if the average quality level of released AGS-games weren't already quick and crappy.

They make it sound as if the problem with most ags-games is that they're far too sophisticated, lengthy and overelaborated...a sentiment I don't exactly share :)

You mean you've never thought "Oh, no, not another free game with stunning graphics, animation, music, plot and gameplay?" I hate those ones (as they ruin my chances of getting an AGS Award)  ;)

I moved out of home at 16 (back in 1991) in a Student Halls of Residence: food included in price, so easy-peasy. But that was back in the days when the government gave you money to go to University rather than the other way around. Student loans had only just started and my summer jobsa nd aprents made up the shortfall (except when I wanted to buy a Psion 3a so I got into a total of 500 quid student debt, woo!)

But some of those places I stayed in were pretty poor, as a student. Once place I woke up and saw my breath misitng in front of me one day. We found dead mice in the grill and the immersion heater took so long to heat up the water in the morning I got used to washing with cold water. Brrr!

Then there was Bristol where I stayed in Redland most of the time in rented stuff until buying my first house in Wolseley Road when I got married. Bought for 80000, sold for 128000 18 months later... and now our house in Edinburgh is now apparently worth 50% more than what we paid for it, (around 165000).. I dunno what you guys are complaining about... get on that property ladder! (Of course, most of the value of the house actually belongs to Nationwide building society)

Anyway, if the game is set in 2004, then shouldn't it be a USB keyring that you use?  ;)

I still don't get why Every other country thinks America is a big stupid mass of people that carry guns around everywhere and drive big SUV's whilst eating our McDonalds.
Your post is really funny when you realise it's basically an ever bigger generalisation than the generalisation that it is complaining about...

Why is it funny? I drive a Mercury Mystique and loathe fast food.Ã,  And I understand irony.

"Every other country thinks..." is a sweeping characterisation of around 6 billion people
"America is a big stupid mass of people that..." is a sweeping characterisation of far less people (is it about 200 million? I can't be bothered looking it up)

Yes, there's a big difference between cynicism and irony, people.
Yup... cynics can be ironic, but irons can't be cynical...  ;)

Yes, wires seem to have been crossed here. We're all flying out from Heatrow Airport, and arriving at John F. Kennedy Internation Airport of Mystery and Intrigue (which is what AGA is refering to with the word Kennedy for all the scottish super heros out there that got confused by it :P)

I wasn't confused: it's just that Dave asked where they were flying FROM, not TO and I was trying to humiliate AGA by pointing this out. Which backfired.  ::)

Oops... why didn't I think of that?  :-[

Since, often in a game, you don't know someone's name when you first meet them  and then discover it suring a conversation tree, it would be nice to change a character's name at runtime. Less importantly, the same with objects (and hostpots) too. It would be reasonable enough to have the restriction that the new name must be shorter than the old name...

So "Old man at souvenier stand" can become "Mr McGonagal" once his name is discovered in conversation and "Mysterious-looking object" can become "Flux Recombobulator" once the scientist explains its use...

OK you can script around it, but adding lots of exceptions to you status bar/action bar/tooltip script is a pain and a half...

Due to the way that the collision detection works, I think it is generally best to have a restriction on your two fighters only being able to move in one dimension, otherwise, the two can be at the same x position, different y and look like they are nowhere near each other, yet if their sprites overlap you collision detection kicks in. Thus, keep movement to the x dimension only (maybe allowing a few pixels in the y) and your path problem disappears...Ã,  ;)

I've thought that to do fighting in AGS properly, you need to have a character made of of various sub-characters for arms, legs, head, body etc so that the collision detection is a bit more meaningful...

As for writing your own pathfinder, I have done a fight thing where you look at the distance from the enemy you are, if very large, move to medium range, if medium range move to close range, if close range then attack. It can mean that your character looks like they are approaching cautiously, too: stopping every now and then to re-assess (which is actaully exactly what is happeing!). It also avoids the resetting of the frame problem, as the MoveCharacter command only happens every now and then rather tahn eveyr game cycle.

Obviously, some Americans only do one or two of these things...

Your post is really funny when you realise it's basically an ever bigger generalisation than the generalisation that it is complaining about... This is your cue for you to claim that you were being ironic and then we'll all know you're lying, as everyone knows that if there's one generalisation about Americans that is true, it's that they don't understand irony.

Now there's a good point. U571 anyone? Yes, the AMericans did capture an Enigma machine... 3 years after the brits had it. The brits warned the Americans about sub attacks and the americans ignored them....

as for teh Madness of King George III.... the III was added for Australian release because Australians are so dumb they wouldn't go and see a movie UNLESS they think it is a sequel...  :P
