To give it publicity, obviously. Why do you announce games here when you've added them to the games page and got your own website? Becasue you want people to use them!

And yes, I admit I was being silly. Here is some more sillyness:

STFU n00b, you can't stop my free speech, etc.
#4282
How are you testing the game? Are you using the Test game menu option? Do you have debug mode set on?
#4283
Why not copy some of his website info here, too? People do the same in the Games in Production forum and it saves them clicking a link..

And I won't complain if people post lots of helpful resources here. I mean, people post lots of links to silly flash animations, 20 questions sites and moan about their birthday presents. At least this post is potentially useful. I mean, why did I contribute a savegame with screenshots tutorial to Vel's ezine? Why does anyone make a free game?

It seems like a strange question to ask... do you suspect that junc and Minimi are controlled by George Lucas and are trying to undermine the whole amateur adventure community by some evil secret code hidden in their contributions?  ;D

As it says when you post:

Three golden rules:
1. Is your post interesting, helpful or funny? If not, don't post it.
2. Post in a mature manner. Remember, the minimum age here is 16 - if you're unable to act that age, don't post.
3. If you're not a moderator, don't pretend to be one. If a thread needs to be moved or locked, the moderators will deal with it.

On the other hand, I'd recommend, Minimi that you exchange links with junc' s site, which has a bunch of resources too (and no-one complained about him posting) and maybe instaGame as well. Maybe you can start and AGS resources web ring!

Also, Minimi, I recommend you look a Webster's Revised unabridged dictionary:

bugger

\Bug"ger\, n. [F. bougre, fr. LL. Bulgarus, a Bulgarian, and also a heretic; because the inhabitants of Bulgaria were infected with heresy. Those guilty of the crime of buggery were called heretics, because in the eyes of their adversaries there was nothing more heinous than heresy, and it was therefore thought that the origin of such a vice could only be owing to heretics.] 1. One guilty of buggery or unnatural vice; a sodomite.

So you've basically named your game after Vel...

To be honest, I much prefer the front view to the side one. For one thing, the side view's ladybumps look like two potatoes glued to her chest... on the other hand, the pics are both much better than what I could do. She has a kind of "secretary" look to her.. is that intentional. In fact, she looks very like Janeway...

The characters and inv items dont really take up much space in themselves, and you can always re-cycle them. It's a bit untidy not being able to remove them, but I'm sure CJ already has this on his "low priority" list...

Foolproof method: have a text-only page  :P

If you're going to let people download pics into a browser, then you can't really stop them grabbing the pics: it has already been transferred to their cache, so how can you stop it going further?

However, you may be able to stop the "casual" theif by:

1. Put a faint watermark on it (using a nearly transparent text layer in photoshop, etc.)
2. Put a copyright message at the bottom/side of the image (like Dilbert)
3. Use some Javascript to disable the right-mouse button menu
4. Use Flash to display all your GFX

Basically, when it comes to stopping peopel downloading anything, your only recourse is to the same that the RIAA uses: sue people.

You do know that treasure is spelt TREASURE, no?

And what is the "Bugger" game about? The mind boggles!

The AGS forums song:

On a dark superhighway,
Cool wind in my hair (from my desk fan)
Warm smell of my coffee
Rising up through the air
Up ahead on my browser
I saw a shimmering light
My mouse grew heavy and my eyes were glazed
Had to log in for the night...

There she stood in IRC
I heard the_mission_bell.mp3
And I was thinking to myself,
this could be Yufster or this could be m0ds in drag
Then she started a DCC
and she showed me a really shaky video
There were voices in #ags
I thought I heard them say:

Welcome to the AGS Forums
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely piece of concept art in the Critics Lounge
Living it up at the AGS Forums
Any time of year
You can find Eric here

They've got mirrors for downloads
They've got ZIPs, RARs and ACE
She said "We are all prisoners here"
"Of our own device"
In the master's forums
They gather for the latest release
They take a stab at making a game
But m0ds still just can't release...

Last thing I remember
I was running for the Beginner's Help
Trying to find out why my hotspot didn't work
When it did with v2.54
"Relax" said the moderator
We can help you with your program
you can log out any time you like, but you can never leave

Obviously, I didn't have anything better to do, so here's some results I got from compressing AGS games:

The games:
Buccaneer, 6DA, RodeQuest 2, Purity of the Surf, Larry Vales 2, Perm. Daylight, Odys. Kent, Astranded, Beyond Reality, RLBAT, WWTLF, The Case, Spellbound, Byzantine, J Stickman, Bestowers of Eternity, Grr Bearly Sane, Songo, 5 days a starnger, Time Out and Cirque de Zale...

Total uncompressed size 239Mb

In order of best compression

SBC (command-line) took 10 minutes to compress to 67 066 634 bytes
7zip took 11 minmutes to compress to 69 144 393 bytes (3% bigger)
WinRK took 1 hour 16 minutes (!) to compress to 69 531 834 bytes (4% bigger)
WinRAR took 4 minutes to compress to 73 352 704 bytes (9% bigger)
WinZip took 4 minutes to compress to 82 817 830 bytes (23% bigger)

This is on a 600Mhz pentium III

Since 7zip can also make self-extractors, it looks like the best to me, all round in terms of ease-of-use, time to compress and archive size.

I also tried downloading durilca and paqar which supposedly have better compression ratios yet, but they both need you to experiment with their millions of options and I couldn't be bothered.

You feel that hunger should never exist also.Ã,  This may SOUND righteous, but it's not.Ã,  What it means is, you want hard-working people to pay to support the people who don't work hard.Ã,  This reduces the encouragement to work, because the money isn't going straight to themself, and they know they will still not starve if they don't work...so why work?

Yeah, those lazy paraplegics, why don't they get up and do something? Anyway, the incentive problem always occurs if benefits are at all means-tested. The only way to avoid this is to have universal benefits (or none at all). ie. Everyone pays a lot more tax, but then everyone gets a handout of the money required to meet basic human needs. Any extra they can earn is thus on top of the handout and doesn't reduce it in any way. Hoever, this system requires a lot more taxation than most places have.

There are a lot more problems with socialism, it leads to inflation, your money becomes worthless, everyone becomes poor, nobody works hard, life sucks, socialism sucks.

Not with universal benefits.

On the other hand, libertarianism has its virtues as well, but it does rely rather too much on the generosity of people, which as has been established with communist practice in the 20th century DOESN'T WORK.

Maybe someone should take a selection of large games from the download pages, try them with bzip2, tar/gzip, zip, rar, ace, etc. and compile some statistics of the results. But I've got better things to do with my time.... AOTS is available in zip or rar, btw  ;)
#4294
You are right... you need to store the hotspot number and cusror mode in variables and then use the variables once you have got there. Take a look at Proskrito's FOA template and see how he does it...

You've never played aninmal vegetable mineral before? It means vegetable as in any kind of plant, rather than the narrow meaning of vegetable...

Anyway, we've done this before:
