I do not like everything that Bush has done,.... but I will still vote for him over Kerry. Kerry lies a lot, and they are stupid lies that are easily found out to be false. ...

The story goes:

In the book Hard Drive: Bill Gates and the Making of the Microsoft
Empire, by James Wallace and Jim Erickson, on page 124 (Chapter 3, The
Microkids) there are the following paragraphs:

... the microcomputer group, including Gates, passed the time on the
airport terminal floor by playing a dice game called Petal Around the
Rose. Gates had not played the game before, but he was eager to try
his competitive hand. The game had been developed by students at the
University of Southern California. Five dice are thrown, and the
player is told three things: the name of the game is Petal Around the
Rose, the answer is always even, and there is a correct answer for
each throw of the dice. The player is told nothing else. If someone
gets the right answer five times in arow, it's considered prima facie
evidence they understand the game and they are sworn to secrecy.

It's a difficult game. Some catch on after only a few throws of the
dice, others need weeks, and a few never get it. Frustrated players
falling into the last category have resorted to running computer
simulations. Gates was one who never figured the game out. He did get
the right answer five times in a row, but not because he understood
what he was doing. He actually didn't have a clue. But with his
photographic memory, Gates was able to remember each correct answer
from a previous roll by another player. With five dice, it was quite a
feat of memorization.

Nelson Winkless realized that Gates was faking it when he picked up a
piece of paper Gates inadvertently dropped in the aisle of the plane
near his seat. On it Gates had written, peddle around the roses.
Knowing the proper spelling of the name of the game was essential to
solving the puzzle. His poor spelling guaranteed he would never figure
it out.

Wasn't that an Infocom game, in which case I'd probably google for "Infocom interpreter" or something like that...

Mine isn't: if I say "The doggies on the bus go 'bow wow wow'," shes repeats 'bow wow wow', which is obviously a sign of great intelligence.

Anyway, if Peter's mother said "It's my opinion that... that woman is a prostitute" or "It's my opinion that... that councillor is immoral" then the correct reply is obviously "It's my opiniuon that you can't judge a book by its cover". But if she presented it as a statement of fact, then she should be prepared to back it up with evidence. Google for "logical fallacies" and you'll find a whole lot of reasons against her subsequent arguiments... i.e. she argued that a moral failing in one area meant that they had no morals... the fallacy of a part being the same as a whole.

Is Ragnar using Zöe or Zoe? If he's using the umlaut then don't use it in yours, and vice-versa.

Zia is OK too, but don't use Tia... I feel sorry for David Duchovny's wife, who sounds like "Auntie Lion" to Spanish people...

Is this why the preload screen always displays in letter box, even though the game is 640x480? But if setup can workout the resolution of the game, why can't the game itself?

Just finished the excellent "Round Ireland with a Fridge" by Tony Hawks (the comedian, not the skateboarder)

Well, you could always manually make a slider by scripting an object or GUI button that moves when you drag it, then use the x (or y if you prefer) postion to determine it's setting. Try searching for "dragging" as I'm sure there's been code put on the forums for how to script up dragging things around.

Star Trek has had it's share of duds, but Enterprise as a prequel is much better than episodes 1 and 2 of SW. On the other hand, Star Trek had to pretty much go back to prequels becuase the new  technology had just about reached a point that there always had to be some part of it break down in order to stop them getting the easy way out of a problem....

Dart, no, dunno if its a boy or a girl yet. We should get another scan in about 6 or 7 weeks that should let us know.

I read a stopry about a school inspector who was asked some 6 or 7 year olds "What have you been learning in class this morning" and one of them said "Teacher told us how to make babies!"

He glaced at the teacher who had turned a funny colour. "Oh yes, and how DO you make babies?" he asked the kid

"It's easy, you take of the "y" and add "ies"  " replied the child...

Do anybody here know how to add a thing so for example: If someone says Hi! then he wont say it again if i try to talk to him.

You need to set a variable the first time, and then check if that variable is set. The manual will explain to you how to set variables far beeter than I could (press F1 when in AGS to get the manual). Try going through the tutorial, it's very good.

And another thing...how do i add a thing so the text will come for example: When i start in the game he will say something.
Use the "First time player eneters room" interaction on your starting room.

The colour of each character's speech is set in the character section. If you are using 16 or 32-bit colour, go to the palette section, choos ethe colour you wantr and make a note of the number, then enter this in your character's settings.

I would find a "duplicate GUI " feature handy, and a "duplicate button", too. In fact a general GUI cut/paste feature...

As for infinite strings, am I right in thinking that CJ once siad that the String manipulation functions assume that strings are 200 long... it would be nice if they could cope with char longsting[1000] so that the usser can specify how long the strings need to be. Or have a global setting MAX_STRING_LENGTH...

Ah yes, I've tried Softy now, thanks. Would it be easier to add .FON support, Radiant? Becuase Softy does TTF->FON, so FON->SCI would complete the chain!

I used two GUIs, one for top and one for bottom. If you need left and right too, that makes four. It's much easier to get the transparency right when it's at an edge rather than a donut. Also, I re-used the same sprite for the top and bottom.

I've never really played around with using palette numbers to do transparency...

oh, and I see I managed to trick you into downloading my game, bwuhahahhaha my plan worked!  ;D
