General Discussion / Re:What do you DO?
Thu 22/04/2004 17:00:18
I look after my daughter for 5 hours in the morning then work for 8 hours designing microchips in the afternoon. Plus a half-hour commute (x2) then that makes a 14 hour day. And then you wonder why AotS is late...

Still, it's only temporary, until my daughter reaches 18 years and leaves home.

EDIT: one thread for these two veyr different suggestions

StrCatChar would be handy to have, becuase currently if you want to add a keycode (for example) to a string, you need to do:

      StrCopy(temp, " ");
      StrSetCharAt(temp, 0, keycode);
      StrCat(mystring, temp);

which is a pain!

SUGGESTION 2:

One thing that would be incredibly useful for team development of games would be if there was a merge feature for joining games togetehr. It would also be handy for people who had already started a game but wanted to add in a "saved games with screenshots" template or something.

The principles of merging are: you have three versions: Base, A and B. Base is the common game that both A and B were based on. If there is something changed in A versus Base and nothign has changed in the same place in B versus base then the merged version should have that change added. And vice versa. Finally, if both A and B have changed versus base then there is a conflict that the user needs to resolve manually somehow.

If you've ever used CVS or a more advanced version control system you've probably come across merges. At the moment you could dump out scripts and even use CVS to merge them and re-import, but there are so many objects in AGS that this would exclude: Sprites, GUIS, etc.

It would be a pretty big task to implement, though, I guess. And then there's the CVS / Sourceforge integration to back it up...  ;)

Maybe the message can say "See the README/Documentation for contact details" then?

Maybe the difference between the forums is not beginner versus experienced or whatever, but rather:

99% Finished work for criticism
vs
Please Darth, or Farl or Loominous or whoever do  a paintover of my rough sketch so that it looks as incredible as your stuff.

So the first is "Critics (and only critics) lounge" forum and second is "Music/Art help forum". OK, there's stuff other than music/art  but lets face it that is 99% of it: anything that falls between stools can bend the rules of one or other a bit. Also, with a forum title like that, n00bs are more likely to look in there for a sticky about paint programs!

I feel a "second coming" joke hiding around here somewhere.

But, if someone's reaction to Jesus appearing in clouds of fire, etc. is to "get out their joystick and play" then they've got serious problems even if Jesus is merciful to them!

Goldmund, if it's any consolation, the preview still looks good to me. Also, bear in mind that in a magazine where you sit next to a Yufster interview, you're bound to look like a Nobel Literature Laureate...

Actually, here's a suggestion: could each AGS game have an "Author" variable that the user has to enter when creating a new game and it should be an email or link to PM on the forums... this could then pop up during such messages...?

"Memento: the game", eh? Just make the main character a different ex-Neighbours guy to avoid copyright problems. How about Dr Gibbons?

#4409
This itself is off-topic, but I don't think this thread was really that far off-topic, as the main thrust of discussion was about the preview of Yufster's game, which was in the ezine...

To stay on-topic, I did like the tutorial: there were a few ideas that might help me formalise what I'm doing and hopefully focus my mind on getting a demo out and then on to the full game...

Maybe CJ could hack the board code so that [help=code][help=story] or similar could be used?

You could always have tooltips for each image:
<img src="buttons/coder.gif" alt="I can help with CODING">

Or even do it properly and put:

<img src="buttons/coder.gif" title="I can help with CODING">

or even both:
<img src="buttons/coder.gif" alt="I can help with CODING"  title="I can help with CODING">

except, we use BBCode on the forums, so it would probably require  CJ to hack around with the YabbSE setup to get that working, as BBCode doesn't have alt or title tags for images AFAIK

Great, it works for me now... and I'm playing with hitting the "outline" button 5 times  :)

This should be added to the resources page and referred to in the help file and faqs ASAP!
#4413
It took me two minutes to solve it ... by googling "einstein riddle answer"  :P

Make sure that you have the latest version of the game, as there have been some bugs fixed in the latest release...

What does "Haddas Idiotic Softwarre" or HIS make you think of?

A tautology?

Anyway, since Mr Penguin is seeming inspired, logo-wise, please see if you can come up with something for "SuperScottishHero"... I could only do a lame SSH over some tartan which looked rubbish. If you do use a tartan, use Buchanan, though... my surname is a sept of that clan.

EDIT: ooh... Haddas has chnaged his

General Discussion / Re:Moderators

"The moderators" is not a homogenous group, so don't tar them with the same brush. If there's been someone editing your posts there are a number of possibilities:

1) It was ONE of the moderators of the board
2) Your password is easily guessable and someone else has logged in as you
3) Someone has used your computer while you were taking a pee

So don't jump to conclusions, as (2) and (3) are far more likely, given the current moderators of this board. Also, why not explain exactly which post in which thread?

Has anyone explained to your mother that the point of HER being given exercises to do is so that SHE learns how  to do it?
#4418
While I am undoubtedly cool, if we are really like THIS (whatever THIS may be) then you would get round to sending me the Beyond Reality source for me to fix the bugs like you said you would, you psychoticnaut, you.

Great ezine Vel. Did you write the historical tutorial youself?

Am looking forward to both "Luna" and "Donna", from these previews. I'm sure Yufster will turn out something that's good whether it's like game A, game B, games C, D and E or even if its like game GF... as with a lot of projects I just hope that she can keep up the momentum to get it finished.

You know that that song is about a guy who died... that makes it even more creepy!

Here is another Spanish poem for you...

Habia una vez un circo
Cinco lobitos tiene la loba
En el coche de papa
En la silla de la reina
Cumpleanos feliz

its very romantic. Anyway, I think your Mr Cervantes is tilting at windmills...
