Maybe you want the function SetObjectIgnoreWalkbehinds?

Come on folks, get those nominations in!

1) Palestina was a British protectorate, they had the right to make with it what they wanted.

Does that mean that we can keep Gibraltar, then?

QuoteNo, we´re 3,000 milions and no one of us uses the name of God for killing.

What about the Crusades?

I'm not sure that any current living Christians were around then... but feel free to produce a really old guy and prove me wrong. Anyway... if it weren't for the crusades, Indy wouldn't have found the holy grail! If you want to find people advocating killing in God's name then Northern Ireland has quite a few using that excuse.

QuoteYou should read Ian Kershaw´s biography about Hitler. His first steps about an agressive foreign politic were very very small (like the militarization of the Ruhr), and the Nations league did nothing. A few years after he invaded Poland.

You can't compare the Nazi dictatorship to the Iraqi dictatorship if you're trying to argue that Muslim dictactorships enact bloodshed based upon their culture (which you previously said).

Hitler wasn't a Muslim nor (to my knowledge) was any other member of the Nazi party.

So, how can you first say that Muslim dictatorships enact violence based on their culture and then make a comparison to a non-Muslim dictatorship?

I thought that he was commenting on Hitler's  miitary tactics more than his motivation. To say that someone has drawn a  parallel in motivation therefore they can't compare tactics with someone of a different motivation is just bad logic.

I'm not saying he's right, just that your arguments are logically flawed.

Actually, my walk cursor does just that

Hungry Horace (Pacman clone) on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum... Yay!

As for adventures, it was one of the ones you type out of a book... Usborne "Write your own adventure" or something

and then graphical adventures... must have been ages before I had one actually... probably Discworld 2!

I want to have this kick-buttock cutscene in Awakening of the Sphinx, where (watch out spoilers, so don't read it if you're not going to help!)

Spoiler

The Sphinx wakes up, stands up and starts to stomp on people who are running away in terror
[close]

The easiest way to do this is probably with a 3d render. I have found a Poser Sphinx model to get things started. However, I have no 3d experience whatsoever and the only 3d tools I have are the ones you can get legally for free (ie Maya PLE & Alice). So, if someone wants to help produce the best cutscene ever then great! If someone can do the animation without 3d then even better! If we can do some cool Matrix-like camera rotations too then so much the better.

Credit wil be given of course, and we can see if you want to put some kind of Easter Egg in the game somewhere: your name in heiroglyphics perhaps, or a statue of you somewhere in a temple?

Please PM me!

THE RESULTS!

And an incredibly cool awards site by Darth Mandarb at:
http://www.twin-design.com/foregos/

At last, the FOREGOs are finished and the results are counted. 49 lovely people sent me their 447 votes over the 11 categories and here are the final results:

CJ's best deed of 2003 was, by a long margin, Breathing and being Awesome. So CJ, just keep inhaling and exhaling and we'll be happy! (nomination by Yufster, OTG and ._.)

The best moderator is a man who many have confused for a woman, thanks to his avatar. Yes, it's everyone's favourite time traveller: Mr Colossal (lets see if I can spell it right this time)

Next up comes the best "n00b" helper in the Beginners Tech forum. Despite strong competition (ie me :)  oh yeah and some other guys), this goes to Scorpiorus.

Now we come to the "best unimplemented suggestion". Now, despite Lens Flare having multiple nominations, another suggestion captured people imaginations and had the largest winning margin (22 votes!) of any category: Character animation preview (nomination by DGMacphee)

The best Tech Forum contribution was a close fought thing: it was tied on 16 votes each to Proskrito and Scorpiorus before last weekend began... but the weekend voting has handed it to Scorpiorus his second award!

Now come the Critics Lounge awards: split into helpful musician and helpful artist.

Despite there being 6 nominees in this category all the helpful artists recieved a healthy bunch of votes, so they should all be congratulated on the work that they do helping people. But one guy stood out with more votes, and I think that most of us owe our walkcycles to his tutorials... yes, Eric does it again as MrColossal takes the helpful artist award.

As for the musicians: again they all do a great job with their help to folks, but in this category one person has obviously spent far too much time doing other people's music and not enough developing Fountain of Youth: yes, it's m0ds!

Now comes the first of the "chat" categories: judged not necessarily on helpfulness but on general contribution to a forum. AGS Talk & Chat is our adventure-related forum and once again I was nominated. It just shows the quality of the other nominees when you realise that I came last with only 5 votes! This category ius another of the close-run ones but in the end, DGMacphee pipped the others to the post.

Now we have awards for the efforts made by people in two of the less-visited forums, which was reflected in the vote counts here. Still, there was a decent haul and everyone nominated here had a good count of votes too:

Best constructive criticism in the Games in Production forum goes to Dave Gilbert, who doesn't post a great deal but it obviosuly counts when he does.

And the most helpful hinter has been chosen to be a real afficionado: AGA

Finally, the second "chat" award, for General Discussion contribution was another close-fought battle. But it seems that one man's efforts to rouse the hispanic vote succeeded and thanks to the support of pretty much anyone who speaks Spanish on the forums, Farlander takes the FOREGO.

It is a great shame not to reward the runners-up, who are greatly deserving too, but I will be contacting the winners so they can sort out their custom forum titles.

Thanks and see you next year (if I can't fob it off on to someone else)

OK, OK, so I put 6 noms in for some categories instead of 5, but that was only because of a deadlock in nominations, so my discretion was used. Also, nominations are listed  in no particular order sometimes and sometimes in order of number of noms: but i'm not telling which! ;) So vote by email or PM and I'll announce the results same time in two weeks. If I don't get enough votes I'll pick the winners myself, so I'm favourite to win those categories I got nominated for ;D

DONT DELAY VOTE TODAY!

Also, congrats to the other folks who got nominated but missed out: Dark Stalkey, Terranrich, Jannar, Flippy_D, Petteri, N3tgraph, Archangel, BionicBill, Goldmund, Simple, Helm, RickJ, fjeronimo and a-v-o

Original header:

So, the AGS Awards are for games
The Ergos are for funny stuff
I thought that to encourage helpfulness and "good behaviour" on the forums, we should maybe have a few awards for that kind of thing. And they will be called the "Forego"s (pronouced 4go).

;)

Competitions & Activities / Re:December MAGS

This is numeral pedantry, but it's all to do with cardinal and ordinal numbers. Anno Domini (AD) means " The year of the Lord", so the day Jesus was born, notionally, was the first day of the first year of the Lord. Hence 1 AD. There was no 0 AD because there is no such word as "zeroth" or "nothingth": these are ordinal numbers. However, BC dates are cardinal numbers, that is the number of years "Before Christ", hence there was a 0 BC.

Since the first year of the first millenium was 1 AD, hence the first year of the second millenium was 1001 AD and the first year of the third millenium was 2001 AD.

Just to confuse things, the latest estimates as to when Jesus was born indicate that it was the year known as 5 BC, as other records indicate that there was a census in Palestine in that year.

Myself, I follow the Chinese system...

Scummy is the forum bicycle... :-*
#4795
Actually, if anyone knows of a link to an animal walkcycle tutorial as good as Eric' human one I'd also be grateful. How do animals really walk? I suppose a horse does it differently, to a lion, for example. And walk, trot, canter and gallop would be all differnt, too.
#4796
So at the anti-aliased edges of your circle, you have some pixels with R 255 G 0 B 0 A 255 (completely opaque red) some with R255 G 0 B 0 A 127 (half-transparent red), some with, say, R255 G 0 B 0 A 20 (nearly transparent red) and various in-between. There is only colour and transparency info... there is no background info: any pink or black shading will be becuase the circle was drawn over a colour in the program, not becasue of the file format or because of using alphas.
#4797
Obviously, you couldn't tell the difference between the dialog terminating with return or with stop and use of goto-dialog and goto-previous would be prohibited, but that could be worked around using run-script or set-globalint.

It would also be handy if dialog options could have Properties (if you were doing a sprite-based dialog system) so that you could use them to store the sprite number. Alternatively, if a function could return the option name...

So , CJ: GetDialogOptionProperty(int topic, int option, string property) or GetDialogOptionText(int topic, int option) please!
#4798
But why not just have a transparent background when you save, rather than white, black, green or whatever? That's what I have tried, and it works!

If your game is on the Announcements page (Which, from my memory, it is) you have nothing to worry about.

Except that people may go looking for it in the games page and not find it. I PMed the good Captain already, but for those who dunno... when you start a game thread in the announcements forum then there is a link on the post message page that lets you add the game. I think it also appears if you edit your message.

The link may also appear in other places, too...

I think that most people will use the automatic transparency done by antialiasing in their drawing program (e.g. PSP) , rather tha mnaually creating one as you are suggesting.

For example, I can draw something with antialias turned on and it will make semi-transparent pixels (ie with an alpha channel)  for me. Or, if I use the default settings in the deform tool I will almost certainly get some semi-transparent pixels at my edges. If I make sure that my background is transparent (you can use the background eraser in PSP8 if you have a solid colour background that you need to get rid of) and save as PNG or TGA, then AGS2.6 can import that alpha channel and give you lovely smooth edges without having to worry about what background it is going to be over.
