General Discussion / Re: Skepticism

Well, of course, not every religion has an evangelical imperative (i.e. feels they need to convert others). Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, for example. They accept converts but do not actively proselytize (except for a few tiny unofficial minorities within the religion).

I don't get the the whole idea of not telling your kids about your faith. Here's my reasoning.

1. I believe that Christianity is true
2. I believe that its the only sure way to eternal life
3. I don't want my kids to die
4. But, wait, I won't tell my kids what I believe is true, so I'll just let them die... NOT.

Andail: oh no, you've created a linguistic paradox, I've seen then the light and am now an atheist. :P

Because religion is still "oficial" in many sides of the world. The day that finishes, I will give a shit about what people does or does not indoors.

So as long as one tiny country might exist in the world with a state religion, you will be belligerent to every religion in every country? That seems... disproportionate.

QuoteEve made from Adam's rib
How God made man, I'm not sure exactly. But this statement is not literal. It is symbolic of Eve being equal to Adam. If she was 'made' of something from his head, it would put her above Adam. Likewise with his feet and being below. This simply shows that man and woman are equals.

You know, if you believe God managed to make the whole universe and create Adam, why would he have trouble doing it in 6 days or making Eve from a rib? Not that I'm trying to say that is what happened, but the Christian God is supposed to be omnipotent. He can do anything. So maybe he did make the world in 6 days, or 6 aeons or 6 billion years: how does this affect my day-to-day faith? Not at all.

Then, someone told me that I was being a coward, and that FC Barcelona fans are child molesters, comparing religion with football... after that I started debating seriously, because religion is not like football... Maybe it's as childish, but it is not a statal imposition which receives the taxes EVERYBODY pay.

In the UK, no religion gets tax money. Spain is not the world. Creationism is not taught in most UK schools.

I said I was making a game which was about Barcelona supporters being molesters. You found that offensive. That was my point: if someone's talking about making a Christian game and you suggest making a game about Jesus being a cheat then they may find it offensive.

Of course, many violent atrocities have happened over the years in the name of football. Of course, the TRUE football fans know that these were just idiots looking for an excuse to be violent and that football was incidental. Oh, did I say football, I meant religion.

And this is on-topic how?

I notice that often its the gays in the closet who most vehemently protest against homosexuality. So perhaps Nacho is a closet christian...

Please can some mod split Nacho's "Religious people are stupid" thread off from the origial topic?

Wow, I actually find myself agreeing with much of what SSH has written here.  MIRACLES DO HAPPEN!

Sorry to have undermined your world view in this way, Progz ;)

I was just suggesting ideas... If he goes for the "Jesus the cheater" via, he will probably get lots of fans, and an  innovative, polemic point of view. If he goes to a literalistic vision of the Bible, he will probably find that people laughs of him.

And some will like it, too. Don't assume that your opinion is the world's.

Why not go into a mosque and make some suggestions for a similar game about Mohammed and see how they like it?

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to make my hilarious new game about how all the players and supporters of Barcelona FC are child molesters ;)

Andrew, to be honest, I was being serious.

Undoubtedly, but the guy is asking if anyone wants to help him make Christian games, not asking people to undermine his beliefs by suggesting that Jesus cheated. If you want to rail against Christianity, this isn't the thread to do it in, you're being offtopic. If someone wanted to make a fangame about the SNES, it would hardly be helpful to say "But that's stupid, the Sega Megadrive was much better".

It might be worth looking into a remake of some of the old Christian IF. I remember playing a Pilgrims Progress IF game back in the 80s, and another one called "Galilee".

SSH:  I've studied American history for quite some years now, and I can only say that nothing has pointed me toward some imminent situation of poor health care that required a change (which, as you said, occured in the UK).  If you do find an article on this I'd like to see it, and I'll see if I can rent that movie you suggested.  Also, as you're intelligent enough to know, there is a world of difference between making children brush their teeth and forcing a nation of adults to pay for welfare and SSI.

Yeah, you can't make adults make charitable donations with the promise of a bedtime story... Seriously, though, in the UK I think it is a valid comparison. In the US, there is much more of a charitable culture that just doesn't exist here. I really don't know enough about that culture to argue about it with you so I think its best if I stick to my own country's situation: I bow to your superior knowledge of the USA. We can probably agree that different countries may well need different solutions.

Personally, I think the way to make sure that welfare doesn't become a trap (i.e. no incentive to work) is to make a single, non-means-tested universal benefit to everyone. Everyone gets enough money to raise them above the poverty line. Now, this would require higher taxes but for many the amount of benefit they receive would cancel out the tax rise and only the highest earners would be worse off. It would also be way more efficient than means testing, as you just give it to everyone and don't have to do any checking or calculations.

One of the worst things about the British tax and welfare system just now is that its soooo complicated. I make sure that I give enough charitable donations through payroll giving to mean that I don't reach the tax band where I have to do a tax  return as they are a nightmare, even if you have a relatively simple life like mine.

How about a game where a priest finds that an ex-parishoner has been murdered and left a load of money to his church. He then has to investigate the murder to free himself of suspicion and ends up in a punch up with the evil bishop who was behind it all. If that plot was good enough for Judaism, its good enough for Christianity ;)

Seriously though, I'd be interested in helping. And ignore the Christian-baiters like Nacho.

I used adobe audition and its a wave file. Anyone knows whats the real maximum kbps for sound?

Most humans can hear up to 20KHz. You need double that sampling frequency to capture that frequency, lets say 48KHz to be on the safe side. You need 32 bits for each channel (left and right) and so you get 48000*32*2=3072kbps. However:

Do you really need stereo? Do you really need 24-kHz frequencies? Do you really need 32-bits? Not if you don't have your own sound-proof recording studio. I'd say that 22kHz sampling, 16-bit resolution and  mono is good enough for sound effects and voice and stereo for music. That makes  352kbps...

Why should people take money they rightfully earn and give it to someone they don't know so they can go to school and be educated?  This sounds charitable and very morally upright on paper, but again, you're taking from one group to give to another, which I stand by my belief to be a morally bankrupt solution.
Well, some people believe that property is theft, so you're taking the right for other people to use your money away from them by denying them acccess to it. Points of view.

And of course, here's where we mention social contracts and you say "I never signed no steenking contract" etc. Well, lets see the contract that people sign before they eat food in a restaurant. Don't use the infrastructure of where you live and we'll see how long you last.

And taking care of each other needs to be voluntary in my view for it to be worth any type of discussion whatever; when you withdraw the human element from a situation, the CONSCIOUS CHOICE to do or not do something, you invalidate its value in my eyes.
I daily have to gently encourage (i.e. force) my children to brush their teeth. Does that stop its value in preventing tooth decay?

Nothing I've read has given me the impression that hospitals had dire conditions prior to welfare, SSH; on the contrary, many doctors from the pre-welfare days who are still living have said the conditions there were often better because they did not have to wade through so much red tape in order to treat patients (and medicine costs were lower, etc).  If you have a study on this that you'd like me to read, I'd like to see it.

In Britain, we study these things at school. I can't speak to America, but life was pretty bleak for the poor here. Even after health insurance was forced upon workers in the early 20th century, things were very inequitable (see the movie or book "The Citadel") and so the NHS was born.

is there a maximum kbps for sound files or is this a bug in the new version? I can't play soundfiles with 3072kbps. I lowered the rate of the wave file down to 128kbps and now it works in the game (of course with bad quality since its 128kbps).

Well, of course, there's little point going higher than 3072kps since that's about all that the human ear can discern, in stereo. (48kHz 2x 32-bit)

What program did you generate the files in and are they wav, ogg or mp3?

Libertarians often argue that people were more charitable before welfare came in, but even given bureaucratic inefficiency, the amount of good done by welfare way exceeded any chartable giving. Poor hospitals and workhouses were terrible places in the main.

In any case, to pull the welfare rug out from under the poor and unfortunate now would be tantamount to murder and it would require many years of gradual reduction and replacement by this supposed charity that is waiting to explode.

The Capitalism/Democracy combo works less badly than every other form of government because it relies on the selfishness of people. Most other systems rely on the selfLESSness of some number of people, which never works.

How would you have a debate of 2500 people?

Would the Demarchy members have their regular jobs held open for them for a year?

Well, just so I can blame someone else for unpopular picks-of-the-month, the new poll on my blog is: what should be December's Pick of the Month?

Obviously, the options I've given you won't include your favourite, so why not gripe about it here?
