I made one too, although I spent a couple of extra hours tweaking it.
Without further ado, I present to thee:

AVOID THE TOWELS!

And of course, to the victor, go the spoils:

My vote shall come later. :)

This is Wonkyth's Untitled entry, as he couldn't make the HG, so he PMed it to me a few hour beforehand.
Enjoy!

As we all know, a towel is the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitch hiker can have. So this week, in celebration of Towel Day, and the release of HHGG, the theme is...

TOWELS!

That's right, this is Hourgame: Douglas Adams Edition!

Hourgame Saturday
What's an Hourgame competition?
The purpose of Hourgame Saturday is to encourage amateur game-making, or to put it bluntly, to make you plant your ass in your chair and finally make something.
In this activity your task is to make an AGS game within a strict and very short deadline (i.e. one hour).

When will it take place?
This Hourgame session will take place on Saturday 29th May 2010. Starting at 19:00 BST (14:00 New York, 20:00 Budapest) participants will have an hour to make their games + 15 minutes to beta test / upload (i.e. the deadline is 20:15 BST).

How do I participate?
A theme is set by the previous week's winner and by the contest's host in event of his/her absence. It will be announced on IRC (3 simple steps to IRC) and here.

Why should I participate?
Because it's FUN!
The more the merrier, and it's great pactice for the ol' game making skills.
And I will personally supply the victor with:

Additional info:
- While it is not forbidden for the theme-setters to participate in the activity, their games cannot be voted for (to prevent accusations of cheating and to discourage regular participation).
- Instead, theme-setters are encouraged to draw trophies for the contest's winners.
- Making your game from scratch is strongly encouraged, though it is not forbidden to use music or artwork from public sources if you are allowed to (e.g. using public domain music tracks in your game is OK, but not really necessary). It is also possible to use a pre-existing AGS template for your game (e.g. the Verb-Coin GUI template).
- You cannot use stuff you've made earlier, because this competition is about making something new.

Camwhoring:
If you have Camtasia or Camtasia-esque software, it would be great to see your "Making of"! Or blog about it, or just open Notepad, do something! No twittering.

Uploading:
Suggested hosts to upload your entry to are:
Recommended:
TerranRich's ShutUpload

Not recommended:
http://www.mediafire.com/
http://www.sendspace.com/
http://www.rapidshare.com/

Or your own place.

Voting:
Just tell us your favourite game. You don't have to enter to vote!
(If you want to tell us what you liked and disliked about all the entries, that would be super nice of you!)
The voting will end when all the entrants have voted, or on Wednesday, 2nd June, whichever comes sooner.

Please post below if you're interested in participating, if the change in time will/won't work for you, or if you have any other questions.

Hope to see you there!

What if a few of us people who haven't finished a real first game yet started from scratch on one this summer?  Say mid June, when most people are out of school (at least in the US, dunno how it is other places, but we can flex for that).  The goal would be to release a short to shorter-medium game of at least mostly decent quality before the end of the summer.  If there is a lot of interest we could split off into groups of two to maybe four or five tops.  Then we meet in a chat and brainstorm.  Maybe enter MAGS or another competition, or just set our own deadline, depending on the scope of what we are trying for.  Doesn't have to be a whole summer long, but that would be the absolute upper limit.

We come up with an idea that is small, but that everyone is happy with.  Then we tally our strengths, weaknesses, and interests and divvy out the work (team management, coding, writing, art and animation, music, puzzle design) accordingly.  If there is something nobody is good at, we find a way to work with it, or recruit someone else who can help us.  Then we keep in touch.  Weekly, twice weekly, bi-daily, or daily team meetings, depending on project length, and have individual team members collaborate with each other in the interim, as needed.

Would anyone else be interested in something like this?

This sounds very nice on paper, although I can't help but foresee it failing.

Literally everyone in a given team would have proven that they do not have the drive to see something through to the end (me included). This does not mean, of course that everyone will give up, but the chances are high that at least someone in every team will, which will wreak havoc with the rest of the team, causing delays and whatnot....

However, I think this has potential to work with smaller teams, shorter games, and shorter time-frames. Say 48-72 hours or so. This is a small enough length of time that aspects in one's real life can be accurately predicted, forces you to avoid 'epic' projects that bog us down, and puts you under enough time pressure to keep the ball rolling the whole way through the project. It is also small enough that we can have several rounds of this, one after the other.

A fast game-turnover also allows you to assess the abilities and drive of other members with less risk, and then you can have iteration with each round of the project, meaning the teams (and hopefully the games) get better and better.

General Discussion / Re: Board Games
Fri 21/05/2010 05:15:58
I made one when I were but a lad, coming up on 6-7 years ago now.

The premise was, if I recall correctly, was to send creatures or monsters to the the opponent's 'Base' and attack them, causing them to lose life points.

The play-field was split into two linear paths which both led to the opponent's Base (just think of a linear path with a monopoly board slapped on top).

The board was split into two Zones, (a Mountain Zone and a Swamp Zone IRIC..) the border being the midpoint of the board, and this gave advantages to certain creatures in battle.

There were several castes of creatures, including:
  • Guardians
These were of low attack and defence, and were needed to Escort Eggs to the opponent's Zone. Escorting meant that the two pieces could occupy the same square and move together.)
  • Beasts
These were of medium attack and defence, and had much more mobility in their own Zone, the Eagle in the Mountain Zone, the Wurm in the Swamp Zone.)
  • Eggs
These initially had no attack or defence, and had to be Escorted to the opposing Zone by a Guardian, where they would then Hatch, and receive attack and defence points based on two respective rolls of a die.)
  • Disasters
These had the maximum attack points (6) and no defence, so their lives were short, but they were very good for defence. Disasters could not venture out of their own Zone.

So the players took turns to either move or spawn a unit, and of they collided in the field, a battle would take place, just pitting their attack and defence points against each other. There was also a limited 'Bank' of Creatures, so you could only summon a limited amount of one creature at one time, less for more powerful Creatures.

The board has long since been thrown out, and it was probably heavily inspired heavily by Magic: The Gathering, which I was quite into at the time, but it was fun to play, and I hope this answers most of your questions.

QuoteI'm not a troll, I'm sick of people calling me that were both (='s) in different way's

To what does "We're both (='s) in different ways" refer?

Judging by the brackets I'd say that's an eastern smiley. And '=S' is a confused smile I believe... is this a crying confused smile to show mixed emotions? Maybe saying that everyone who calls you a troll is confused or upset for no apparent reason to you? Your grammar confuses me (='s)

Yeah, I was confused by this too, although I basically interpreted it as "We are both trolls in our own ways :-\"
Which is completely ridiculous really, seeing as there's an important difference between feeding a troll and being one.

The recent Hyper Magazine thread reminded me that we never did get round to creating a thread as a kind of "archive" of when AGS or AGS Games have featured in the media.

Therefore, I have created this thread for just that purpose.

Settle down Cal, I was just messing with ya :P

A little something for the victor.

Spot saved for my vote when I've finished all the games.  ;D

It's a pic, I just made it use the provided palette, with a few additional tinkerings.

Well dude, I bow to your awesomenes... Well done! Looks great.

You should join www.pixeljoint.com , if you haven't already. Great place if you're into pixelart.
Hah, he'd probably get shot if he took that to pixeljoint... they don't take too kindly to a bit of photo-filtering :P

Jim, it came out quite nicely though.
