I will actually be a music major this fall :) Plus oboe is my principle instrument.  About this new midi, it's gorgeous! but the cello can only go down to the c two octaves below middle c. Either bring it up an octave or give that part to a contrabass. And the ocarina is interesting, but it gets covered up in the last section. There exists an alto flute (range to g below middle c) and a bass flute (octave below middle c) also, so I think it'd be ok to leave that part as a flute.

Perhaps you could find an instrument range chart online, I've found one before but I don't remember where, since most of the problems seem to be with that. Or you could just leave it the way it is since it is a midi, I don't think many people will be able to tell. Excellent work!

Lazy Z: I think some of my inspiration for the game came from the fact that I just wanted to write some music for a game, and some of the music I had written fit best in a weird game like this. Another thing was that I have been here for awhile and never released a game, and I didn't want to waste a bunch of time making a long game. I also like strange artsy type stuff and just wanted to make something that would be hard to understand for a change. I was also sort of influenced by DG's Dada game he released awhile ago. So I guess that's how it came about.

About the Latin, I chose it because in some place like Hell, there's probably weird writing or symbols and stuff (well in my Hell at least), and Latin seems like a pretty good choice. Plus it's a dead language so pretty much everyone who plays it is going to have the same problem understanding it. And Latin is the only other language I really have any knowledge of besides English.

The text itself is blurry because I wanted to look like it was chiseled into a rock and has been sitting around for a long time, corroding and stuff.

And one more note about the Latin, if you really have no knowledge of it at all, remember the Ancient Romans didn't use the letter 'u' so sometimes a 'v' is actually a 'u' in a modern spelling. But sometimes it's really a 'v', so, um, have fun with that.

And since nobody will probably get this, the text is actually Latinized quotes from Dante's Inferno.

The first midi is pretty. One thing that kinda bugged me was that you have the oboe playing notes that don't exist in its range. You could bring it up an octave or just have an english horn play that part instead. FYI: the oboe goes down to the Bb right under middle c, and the english horn to the Eb under middle c. Also you don't have to change this, but I think the guitar part would be much prettier on a harp instead.

The second midi I like too actually. Perhaps there isnt enough contrast to make it interesting enough to listen to by itself, but I think it's fine as background music. Also, maybe you should choose a different sound than the organ. Your voicings are fine, but with that sound it makes all the low notes sound really muddy and it's kind of annoying. I actually played around with it a little bit and it would sound really good arranged for a string orchestra.

edit: Oops I forgot, about the first one, when the second phrase starts (well, when the flute goes back to the original phrase, when the oboe and bass come in) don't have all the instruments come in at once. You had just the flute and guitar and then all of a sudden a couple instruments come in at once. Try to sneak them in. Have a small oboe/EH solo section right before that or something and then combine them in that phrase. And you could have the bass come in half way thru the flute solo, or sneak it in somewhere in there. It just sounds kind of amateurish to layer it the way you have.

Os: The words are in Latin, and yeah it's 1st person.

Gilbert: If I translated everything I think it would lose some its effect. It's a dead language, but you can always translate online if you don't get what's going on. Yes you finished the game, and it's ten times worse without sound. Plus there's no written dialog, it's all voice.

Also, if you didn't read the summary on the games page, it's basically about your soul's journey to Hell after committing suicide.

Download it here:
http://www.agsforums.com/games.php?category=0&action=download&game=417

You can read a little bit about it in the short games section.
It's sort of a thinking game, everything in the game means something, even if it doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I hope it's comprehensible.

A few comments:
The game is in 640x480 16 bit color, so I hope it doesn't go really slow. Some things are timed to the music so you might not get the full effect if you have a slower computer.

I think the music is what I'm most proud of in the game. In some instances I wrote the music first and then added stuff to fit it.

Graphics have often held me back so I just gave up drawing all together and did a bunch of photo-editing. It was actually pretty fun!

You have a nice voice but it sounds like you're in a closet or something. Maybe if you add some reverb or something. Also I think I would like it better if you added some background accompaniment. Just suggestions though.

Woops, sorry I'll announce the winner.

And the winner is... C. Leks!!

It seemed like the most realistic character description, to me at least.

Everyone's entry was great, and it's wonderful to see people actually putting time into this contest again. Sorry I don't really have time to comment on everyone's entry, but this was the toughest contest decision I had to make in a while.

I have had the same thing happen to me, though. I re-discovered Mozart's Symphony in G minor a couple of years back (I think I was about 15?). I was all happy, and then 15 minutes later I realised what I had done, and I became sad :(

Crazy. The exact same thing happened to me, around the same age too. Freaky  :o

What kind of mystery feel are you looking for? Right now it sounds sort of like sneaking-around music. If you want more atmospheric music then I agree with Mr. Flibble. Slow it down and try not to continuously use percussion. Maybe just once in a while. I recommend listening to the museum music from the Dagger of Amon Ra, if that's the kind of sound you want. I can't get either of those from audiostreet to download. Both quit at around 3/4 completion. I guess I'll try again.

Sorry, but isn't that midi just the whole of the SQ theme? Did you rework it or did you just claim you did something with it? ???

Yeah, uh, well at least I reorchestrated it (which after hearing the original, it needed anyway). And I added an ending so it didn't repeat endlessly.  ;D

Yeah, it's the SQ4 theme.

No way! I guess it'd be good if I actually played that series.

I orchestrated the Demo Quest music a long time ago and I guess I never posted it. You can use it if you want.

I always thought it was weird the way that was written for what seemed like an orchestra, but all the tracks were set to 'piano'. Ah well, I hope this is better than the original at least.

I kind of like the atonality between the bass and melody. It'd be cool if there was more of it. Add more layers on top of both to fill the sound out. Generally the piece is pretty static, so if you add more changing harmony etc. it will sound more tense. For instance, the last note is held out way too long, and nothing is happening during it. It's more annoying than tense to me. It'd be better if the piece was longer too. I wouldn't want to listen to this repeated over and over again.

Yes, it is mandatory to enter the contest this week.

The requirements:
This piece of music must represent your own personality. Hopefully everyone knows themself well enough to come up with something good. Got something lying around? Enter it!

So start already...

I use DPaint too, and I'm (sort of) still making a game in the old school style (if anyone actually remembers it). You could go to my website to check it out, but I only posted one screen shot. I haven't worked on it in a while, but I haven't cancelled it.

It's not a big deal, but it used to say "transferred from EZ boards" for the date registered of...people who transferred from the EZ boards.

Why would anyone bother. I mean who really needs to know whether someone is gay, or christian etc. from looking at their car?
