Ah I see, so like incidental music. That's cool, I'll definitely enter this one.

EDIT:

Ok, I guess that was quick, I finished my entry.

Here's the midi:

http://cygnes.homestead.com/files/rumpelstiltzkin.mid

I'll just quote the Fairy Tale text:

"I saw a little house, and in front of the house burned a fire, and around the fire danced the most grotesque little man, hopping on one leg and crying:
Tomorrow I brew, today I bake,
And then the child away I'll take;
For little deems my royal dame
That Rumpelstiltzkin is my name!"

Imagine the Queen's delight at hearing the name--
and when the little man stepped in shortly afterward and asked, "Now my Lady Queen, what is my name?" she asked first: "Is your name Conrad?"
"No."
"Is your name Harry?"
"No."
"Is your name, perhaps, Rumpelstiltzkin?"
"Some demon has told you that! Some demon has told you that!" screamed the little man, and in his rage he drove his right foot so far into the ground that his leg sank in up to his waist. Then in a passion he seized his left foot with both of his hands and tore himself in two.

I have yet to get that download to work, but I'm sick of these contests going way past their deadline, so...

Congratulations Peter Thomas!!1!

All entries were wonderful, but yours stuck out the most. Excellent job everybody!!1

I guess this idea wasn't as successful as I had hoped...

Hmmm, it's interesting, but I think like the last piece you posted (if I'm not mistaken), it seems very sparse, there is too much silence and not enough substance. You could add a harmonic chord progression as a background because right now all it really seems like is melody. The cymbal crashes are also random and don't make that much sense with the rest of the piece. The whole thing is fairly quiet and the random crashes take away any type of "fairyness" to it.

Also if more instruments were playing at the same time it would sound less sparse. They don't all have to have their own separate part, and they shouldn't be doubling the melody necessarily either. While some instruments have the melody, let the other ones play the harmony. It needs to have a fuller sound.

Consider yourself lucky. My 56k connects at 26.4 and rarely 28.8 all the time. The fastest download speed I can get is 2-3kbps. If I only lived 1000ft across the bridge I could get cable...I think. The cable company is really bad at returning phone calls.

Does anybody plan on entering, or does the deadline need to be pushed?

Sounds more like techno than classical, but perhaps it's your choice of instruments.

The beginning is very cyclic and doesn't actually seem to go anywhere. The second part is also quite static. If it had an interesting melody the whole thing might make more sense. Also the instrumentation needs work. As for form, it needs to be revised. It appears to be in binary form, but neither section is justified within the others. Music is built from motives, and there isn't a lot of material to work with in your piece. Add more, but make sure everything is justified. Write it for a reason, not just to add more notes. Also remember to make music interesting there needs to be contrast, more than just two large sections.

I don't want to sound harsh, but calling it a classical composition let me to critique it in a classical manner. And obviously no first draft of a piece is perfect, especially when you've never written in this style before.

:) not bad!

It's not required to embed sound into the video file, and I actually had to convert this to another format just to edit it, so I don't think it's that hard to find a free program that'll convert it, but whatever you want to do is fine.

Sorry it took so long, but it's finally here! Ok, hopefully you guys will like this. This weeks contest is to score for a short horror film video.

It's sort of a random foreign clip, hopefully nobody's seen the movie.

No restrictions except to keep the file size under 2 MB.

Have fun!

Here's some various English phrases from around the world.

Uh, but nobody spells anything that way. I'm sure they would be easier to understand if you could hear it.

Sorry about this, but I have a good idea and it looks like it'll take me a day or two more to get everything together. If you don't mind I'll continue with this idea.  ;D

I am 17 going on 18.

Woo! I'll get on the new contest as soon as I can.

I use Vienna Sound Font Studio. You can download it free from the creative labs website I think. I've never used any other programs, but this one seems to do everything I need it to.

It's interesting, sounds kind of Beetle'ish. The only thing I can say is that it would be better (the recording anyway) if you were singing on pitch, like Farlander mentioned.

K, here's my entry:

And the midi:

The instrument I chose was the tuba. Er, enjoy!

3. "Wizards" doesn't sound egyptian to me...

Yeah, make them priest of Isis and Osiris.

Myst was ok, for an introductory game. The real story comes in Riven and Exile. I was totally clueless after I finished Myst, but playing the other games made the whole world more interesting and complete.

There really is a thin line between the Myst series being adventure or strategy. I would put it more in the strategy category myself, but it has elements from both, making it a sort of hybrid I guess.

Well anyway, I guess my point is that you shouldn't judge the series on the first one because the other two are far more expansive, with a whole history you could get into (if you bought the hint books. It's kind of strange that there are a lot of things you can't learn from playing the game itself. They developed all these back stories that you can only read in supplementary handbooks and stuff like that.)

The only one's I recognize are the Larry Vales theme and the Rode Kill theme. I haven't played any new ones in a while.

Wait what? You guys say "noob" (nube) instead of (newbie)? Anyway that's what it looks like you wrote.

I agree that it's too short. Also for it to be funny it doesn't have to be that random. It could be in normal time with maybe just a strange melody. It might sound better with more instruments playing at the same time too instead of one after the other.
