Theme: "Little unknown traditions"
Theme provided by: LostTrainDude

Description:
Even though I don't think it's much unknown, these days, where I come from (Naples, Italy) there is a custom: when you order an espresso, you can decide to pay for an additional one so to leave it paid in advance for someone who may not be able to afford it. It's called "caffè sospeso" (translated as "pending coffee") and it basically is an anonymous act of kindness.

For this month's MAGS I'd love to see entries including some little-known traditions or customs from your birthplace, culture, religion, folklore or whatever else you think would be nice to share.
Your entry doesn't have to be built around it, but you can do it if you so wish!

We AGSers come from all over the world, and I thought it could be a nice way to share and explain little - maybe otherwise inexplicable - bits of culture!

If you can, point out - either here in the thread or in the game, if you find a clever way to do so - which tradition\custom you have included!

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favourite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see above). Second, create your game fuelled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

* A working download link
* The title of your game
* A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fourteen days and the winner chooses the next month's theme.

A guy on the Facebook group is trying to register but having problems. I thought I'd try to work out what's up but on the page for registering it just says the words “Hacking attempt”.

Is that a bug or really some kind of anti-hacking failsafe.

Time to find out what you've all been doing in there all month.

Cave of Avarice
by Blondbraid, cat and Slasher

Topic: What are they doing in there?
Chosen by: Retro Wolf
Deadline: May 31st

Maybe there's somebody suspicious making some strange noises in their shed.
Maybe you need to sneak in when they're not around.
Perhaps the player is the one building something secret that they don't want other people to know?
Is the person innocent and the neighbours are just paranoid and nosy? Maybe they're brewing alcohol during prohibition! Maybe it's a killer robot about to be unleashed on the world and no one believes you!

These are just ideas and the theme can be interpreted in any way you wish.
Previously made graphics and sounds can be used.

Here are some pictures to give you some inspiration.

AGS alumnus Yahtzee (of Trilby and Zero Punctuation fame) was interviewed on Stuart Goldsmith's Comedian's Comedian Podcast. It's an hour+ long interview and a really cool insight into the man and how he works. He does mention AGS briefly, which was cool.

I've listened to every episode of this podcast anyway and he usually interviews stand-ups, clowns and sketch performers so this one is a bit of a different episode. If you like Yahtzee, or even if you don't, it's well worth a listen.

By the way, Ali. When are you gonna be on ComComPod? IIRC Stuart did mention your name on the show a number of episodes ago.

The theme for this month is "glass of water".
Specifically the game must display the text "glass of water" during a complete playthrough.
Use of any pre-existing assets is permitted.

Rules:

  • the case of the text may be modified
e.g. "GLASS OF WATER" or "Glass of water"

  • the text can be part of a longer phrase
    e.g. "I'd like a glass of water"

  • the game name must not reference a glass of water
(this is to help ensure that game names are not duplicated and that the text displaying requirement is not met by the title screen)

Game Pitch Competition - Round 9: “What's Wrong With This Pitch-er?”

The object of the competition is to present the best possible "elevator pitch" for an original adventure game.
Come up with a cool idea, and explain it very briefly to someone in order to catch their interest and make them excited about it. (Check out the last round to see how it goes.)

You probably know the drill by now, but if you don't...

Spoiler
Procedure

  • Submit your game pitch via this form.
  • I will post the entries (anonymously) as they come in, in order to inspire others to join.
  • Submissions close 12th February. I will then open a thread poll for voting.
  • Voting will last 7 days. Discussion and feedback on the entries is encouraged, but make sure to maintain anonymity.
  • After voting is over, the results and authors of each entry become public.
Rules

  • The pitch should be for some kind of adventure game (under a broad definition of the genre).
  • Stick to the word limits: An elevator ride is not that long! (If you run over, those parts will be placed behind spoiler tags.)
  • You may submit only one entry in the round.
  • The entry should be anonymous. Do not reveal your authorship until voting closes.
  • Do not vote for your own entry. It's not cool.

I'm looking forward to your pitches!

Dressing up
This month's topic was chosen by cat.

February is carnival time, so let's put on some costumes! Some ideas to get you started:

  • A cosplayer assembles his outfit for a comic convention
  • A teenage girl searches for the perfect prom night dress
  • Kids need to find hat and scarf for their snowman

In the end someone or something should be dressed up wearing something fancy (or fail miserably trying).

Feel free to use any existing material but let us know which parts you reused and what was originally created for this competition.

Topic: Crossover
Chosen by: Danvzare

Description:
The hot new trend recently has been cinematic universes. Everything's got to be connected to everything else! So that's why the challenge this month is to pick two or more works of fiction and combine them.

Do you have two games you made before that you want to make a sequel to? Then now's your chance!
Never made a game before? Then why not have Sherlock Holmes meet Dracula!
Don't have any art skills? Make a special crossover episode between Reality on the Norm and Maniac Mansion Mania!

The possibilities are endless! Just make sure it's combining two or more works of fiction, regardless of whether those works of fiction are games, movies, books, or comics, that you or someone else has made. As long as it's possible to see the original source materials, then you're good to go.

Special Guidelines:
If you're making a crossover/sequel to two of your past games. You are allowed to reuse the sprites from those past games, and if necessary, a background or two.
Of course, all publically available assets can be used at any time.

Captain Carver's Carnival Curios by VampireWombat

Dr. Chuckles' miniature world of madness by Slasher and Mikeg

Topic: "MINIATURE"
Guidelines by The Outer Zone
Deadline October 31

Interpret the theme in any way you want.

Since the dawn of man, we have built small worlds. A dollhouse for the kids, a ship in a bottle, art installations showing us a grand scene inside a box. We have written tales of "the small folk" living in the furniture in the attic, and created small scale models that transform into titans on the big screen.

I place the power of the miniature in your hands! - I look forward to see what you do with it.
...a snowglobe pick-up is also accepted :)

Using any pre-made assets is up to you.

While Snarky is away on Mittness, I'm sharing Game Pitch duties. so I hope you're ready.  It's time for another...

Game Pitch Competition â€" Round 6: "The Pitch-hiker"

The object of the competition is to present the best possible "elevator pitch" for an original adventure game.
So, come up with a cool idea, and explain it very briefly to someone in order to catch their interest and make them excited about it.

We're being strict about the word limits so if you go above the max length, the remaining part will be placed behind a spoiler tag, and voters may choose to ignore that part of the pitch.

Procedure

  • Submit your game pitch via this form.
  • I will post the entries (anonymously) as they come in. Hopefully this will inspire others to join.
  • Submissions close October 1st. I will then open a thread poll for voting.
  • Voting will last 1 week (until October 8th). Discussion and feedback on the entries is encouraged, but make sure to maintain anonymity.
  • After voting is over, the results become public. I will post the list of participants, and we can then work to identify the authors and discuss the entries further.
Rules

  • The pitch should be for some kind of adventure game (under a broad definition of the genre).
  • Try to stick more or less to the word limits: An elevator ride is not that long!
  • You may submit only one entry in the round.
  • The entry should be anonymous. Do not reveal your authorship until voting closes.

Congrats to Kastchey and Slasher. You'll be contacted soon about choosing a topic for November.
Commiserations VampireWombat.
Thanks to all entrants and voters.

Jason and the Golden Apple by Slasher

Here Be No Sirens by Kastchey

Sweet Mythery by Vampire Wombat

Topic: Mermaids and Sirens
Chosen by Kastchey

A mermaid is a half-human, half-fish. A male version of this creature is called a merman, but its appearance in tales and popular culture is significantly less common. The mermaid steals the spotlight!
A siren is a human-bird hybrid, most commonly depicted as a large bird with a head of a human female. They would lure the sailors to their dwellings with their singing and crash their ships for the rare delicacy that is mariner meat!

Since these two entirely different mythological creatures are often confused with each other, why not use both for a MAGS theme?

For this month's competition, your challenge is to create a game featuring a mermaid, a merman or a siren.
It can, but does not have to feature the actual living creature. It can be a person disguised as one, it can be a painting, it can even be a homonym (e.g., siren as a warning sound device is also acceptable).

Some ideas to get you started:

1. A merman boy sets out to find his dolphin friend who has gone missing, and rumor has it that there are sharks around! Well only one shark who is old, half blind and missing most of his teeth but to a small merman boy he sure looks scary.

2. A crackpot journalist needs to get footage of a real mermaid to pay the bills, but they just wouldn't show up. Out of better options, she decides to fabricate one.

3. A mermaid gets entangled in a fisherman's net. She needs to free herself and get her tail out of there before anyone spots her.

4. A prankster or an activist wants to hijack the emergency siren system to play a custom sound.

5. A brave adventurer has been tasked with obtaining the priceless plume of a siren.

There is no restriction on the use of pre-made assets.

Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

* A working download link
* The title of your game

Congratulations on the impressive win. You will be contacted by PM soon about choosing a topic for MAGS October.

Vote using the poll at the top of the page.

Topic: Censorship
This month's guidelines were set by Hobo

Feel free to interpret the theme any way you want. As a guidline I suggest pushing a pro- or anti-censorship agenda, creating a world where someone or something is suffering from or forcing a censorship or simply censor some parts of your own game (which is also a good way to excuse any missing assets and unfinished work :))

PS! I totally added an awesome image to inspire and motivate you all, but sadly it was censored :(

Pre-made and public domain assets are allowed.

Someone on the Facebook group is trying to register on the forums but is having an issue:

“Hi! I have problems On Signing Up On the Forums, It seems I have the Right Answer on Registration Quiz but It always give me an Error Message saying I have one wrong Answer even though my answer is correct. Can you please help me? I wanna join the AGS Community Forum because I have lots of questions when It comes to Scripting and Such.”

Any idea what could be the problem? Other than maybe he is getting one of the Qs wrong

October is still a little way away but I had the idea of putting together an ultimate horror-themed watchlist by the AGS community.

Obviously, I don't expect anyone would actually watch all 31 films in 31 days but we can all try to watch some of them, perhaps even watching them together and chatting about them in the forum or on Discord and IRC. If at least a few people are watching one of the films on any given day and keeping the thread alive then that would be awesome.

I've come up with a preliminary list of ten horror categories with the idea that we could all choose ten films that fit these ten categories and then together we can compile a list of 30 (assuming that number 31 is going to be Halloween). We can discuss any adjustments or changes over the next few days before settling on a final ten, but for now, here is that list:

  • Curses/witchcraft
  • Possession/demonic
  • Undead (zombies/vampires)
  • Ghost stories
  • Slasher flicks
  • Psychological horror
  • Creatures/monsters
  • Comedy/parody
  • Miscellaneous horror
  • Miscellaneous not-necessarily horror.

As you can see, I've included a non-horror option with the idea that we could have a little breather from horror at regular intervals throughout the month. If people think that's a lame idea we can scrap it. There will obviously be some cross-over between the categories, but they are just intended as a guideline to make sure we get a good spread of horror.

Here's how I see things working (it's just a rough outline for now):

Step 1 (3-4 days) Discuss the categories and settle on a final ten.
Step 2 (2-3 weeks) Fill in this Google Form with your ten films*. We can discuss our choices in the thread while this is going on.
Step 3 (2-3 weeks) Compile all the suggestions and choose three from each category to get 30 films. Also discuss where to place each film in the month.
Step 4 (2-3 weeks) Locate, borrow, rent, as many of the films as we can. We can share information on where to stream or buy the films. We may even be able to lend/gift each other some of the films.
Step 5 (October) Watch the films. One film will be assigned to each day. We can watch them individually or try to synchronise so we can chat about them as we watch.

* This isn't necessarily a voting process. These are just recommendations. We will discuss which films to include in step 3. Of course films that lots of people chose will get priority but I want to compile a diverse and eclectic spread, so some editorial decisions with be discussed. Also, it would be nice to try and make sure that everybody gets at least one of their suggestions onto the list.

A couple things I want to point out before we start talking and making our choices:

Try to ensure that your 10 contains a mixture of tones and settings.

Try to include a spread of movies from a range of eras. From black and white monster movies through 80s slashers to something released just this year.

Preferably think about how readily available the films are for most people to rent, stream or buy cheaply (and legally if possible). It's not expected that anyone will actually watch all 31 films over the month but would be nice if as many people as possible had the best chance to watch as many as they can/want.

All that is to say, try not to show off too much by listing a bunch of obscure films that no one else has heard of. It's not intended as a contest of horror geekery. Of course, a handful of little known gems would be great, so please think of one or two, but I hope to expect some big-hitters in there, too. Feel free to even include one or two titles that you haven't actually seen yet yourself.

Make a game in which energy or electricity must play an important role. (Might mean power stations, might be in Paris, France (town of the light) or Vegas, USA, might mean cops with tasers chasing thugs, might be a quest for energy in a distopian world...)

I changed my signature the other day and then I noticed that my profile pic/avatar was gone. I definitely didn't go out of my way to delete that. I'm wondering if there's a bug in the page that caused the text for the avatar url to be deleted when I saved the new signature.

It could be that I somehow inadvertently did it by clicking on something I shouldn't have... but I don't think so.

I'll test it again later when I've got a moment. But for now, any ideas?
