General Discussion / AGS Secret Santa
Wed 07/12/2016 10:46:08

It's December, so you're officially allowed to talk about Christmas without annoying me. And in fact, I'm feeling rather festive, for a change.

I had an idea that we could do a forum-wide 'Secret Santa' (or Secret Seasonal-Gift-Giving-Figurehead-of-Your-Choice).

How exactly this would work is open for discussion. I'm thinking we have an initial show of hands as to who would be interested in taking part. After a given deadline, I would run all the names through a randomiser and privately inform everyone who they need to buy a pressie for.

  • First things first, if you are in say in capitals "I'M IN". If for any reason you change your mind before the deadline (23:59 on December 11th) say "I'M OUT". No one will judge anyone for changing their mind.
  • What sort of gift value do you think is reasonable? I personally don't think it needs to be any more than $5, US.
  • Should we stick to Steam Keys and digital content or would you be up for sending/receiving physical gifts in the post? Of course, not everyone is comfortable giving out their home addresses online. If we were to go physical, you would send addresses to me and I would of course only ever share them with the person who has drawn you for the Secret Santa.
  • Any other suggestions, points, questions?

Topic: Pickpocketing
This month's guidelines were set by Slasher.

Some people have their pockets picked at least once. It's an awful but real crime that happens. In this game you play as the pickpocketer.

How successful can you be as a pickpocket? Can you use tried and tested skills to carry out pickpocketing successfully or will you get caught and sent to prison?

Must include:
1: A variety of pickpocket objects such as wallet, phone etc.
2: Use whatever is at hand to pickpocket.

Points to be awarded for the most novel pickpocketing ways...

What is MAGS?

Started in 2001, MAGS is a competition for amateur adventure game makers. The idea is to create a game in under a month, following the rules set by the previous winner. It aims to help you work to a deadline, improve your skills, and provide a kick-start into making adventure games. Regardless of skill, MAGS is for everyone. Voting is based on "favorite" games, and not the most artistic, or the best coded. If you have bad art skills, use it as a chance to do some graphic work. If you're sub-standard at coding, use it as a chance to give scripting a go. Ultimately, people will vote for the most enjoyable entry.

Rules

• You may work in a team to produce an entry.
• You are not allowed to use any material created before the competition. Your game must be completely new! An exception is music and sound; you can use any audio that is freely available to the public.
• Any modules and templates featured in this board are also allowed.

Entering MAGS is simple. First, conceptualise your game following the month's criteria (see top). Second, create your game fueled only by coffee. Finally, post your game in this thread, including:

âÅ"“ A working download link
âÅ"“ The title of your game
âÅ"“ A suitable in-game screenshot

At the end of the month, voting will begin, usually lasting for fifteen days. The winner chooses the next month's theme, and their name and game is immortalised in the MAGS Archive. For more information, please visit the Official MAGS website.

Topic: Afterlife
This month's guidelines were set by CaesarCub

All men must die (some more gruesomely than others) but the real question has always been "What happens next?"
This month in MAGS we explore the Afterlife.
Where do the dead go? Heaven, Hell, Limbo, Valhalla, Sto'Vo'Kor?
Must they bribe their way to reincarnation at the Divine Treasury?
Do they become one with the Force?
Or maybe our former-adventurers find themselves experiencing a never-ending loop of Christmases for the rest of eternity?

It's up to you to tell us!

There are no particular rules, except for the game to happen in the afterlife.

General Discussion / Has anyone here used Tor?
Mon 10/10/2016 11:03:41
Does anyone here use Tor or the deep web in general?

I'm tempted to check it out but don't really know if I need to. Im not a criminal or a whistleblower or a political dissident... Yet.

Is there any use for it for a regular Joe like me other than wanting to be super anonymous when browsing cat pictures?

Topic: Genre Shift
This month's guidelines were set by Crystal Shard.

Have you noticed how big companies take an existing concept and use it everywhere? For example, there's Pac-Man the Boardgame. Super Mario has starred in anything from racing games to party games to a full-fledged RPG. World of Warcraft is a MMORPG that started as a strategy game and now has everything from a trading card game to collectible figurines to a movie. But why should big companies have all the fun? We can do that too!
The goal for this month is to take an existing game (of any age) and remake or demake it in a different genre. For example, you could take a first-person shooter like Doom and remake it as a point-and-click adventure... or you could take Monkey Island and remake it as a platform game! It's fine to make it a parody or change the names, as long as you make clear which game you were inspired by. No further restrictions.

Topic: Pure Evil
This month's guidelines were set by WHAM

It has been discovered (by someone or something) that EVIL is, in fact, a physical substance (liquid, slime, pills, pellets etc) that can be extracted from persons or inserted into persons (or animals, maybe? Plants? Machines? Bricks?) somehow. How much evil can there be in a brick, I wonder. Or a cat?

Rules:
> The game must be built around the premise described above
> The game must show or describe at least one sequence where EVIL is either extracted or inserted to/from someone/something
> Contestants are free to expand the theme at will (maybe something else can also be extracted / inserted? Good? Happiness? Love? Sorrow? Liberosis? Adronitis?)

I've been working on a Twine project and I've nearly reached a sort of mile-stone. Before I continue much further I want to know if what I've got so far is actually any good.

So I'm looking for, let's say, three people to have a couple of run-throughs and let me know what you think.

Twine is predominantly for choice-based storytelling but I can't shake the AGSer in me even for a Twine project, so it still plays very much like an Adventure game with an inventory, puzzle-solving and the like. I really like what I've got so far, though I'm aware the story is a bit thin as it stands. So any feedback regarding the writing, characterization as well as bug reports and the like will all be very welcome.

So if you are interested, PM me and I'll sort you out a link (it's all in-browser so there's no download).

Cheers.

I was watching this video from Vsauce (https://youtu.be/f8WsO__XcI0) and he said that according to RaviCorp., who own(ed?) AllMusic.com, these are the top 7 band names.

Some of those might look somewhat familiar :-)

I'm also reminded of someone I recently started following on a Twitter who had been incessantly plugging their game with the hashtag #TheRevenant. I'm sure I wasn't the first one to point out to them that they might struggle to get noticed due to a little indie film starring that up-and-coming DiCaprio kid. They have since changed the name though, thankfully.

So, how do much thought do you put into naming a game? What do you take into consideration? And have you ever come across another game that had the same title as yours?

There are tons of games set in medieval times, the present or the distant future. But what about all those other settings and epochs? What about a game set in ancient Mesopotamia, during the French Revolution or the Japanese Edo Period?

Bonus points for including a real historic person or event (e.g. murder of Caesar, the arrival of Columbus etc.)

I have a feeling the answer is no, but some clever clogs might know a workaround. Is it at all possible to use different fonts within a single line of speech.

We normally change the fonts outside of the speech commands so you can change the font from one time to the next, but how about within the same line?, much like we do all the time in any basic word processing (including this  forum)?

Any ideas?

Football fever is nearly upon us and suddenly we're all armchair experts again.
After a successful World Cup Prediction League in 2014, the world's attentions turn to France on June 10th for
UEFA Euro 2016.

Here's how the prediction league works: Predict the scores, earn points, the person with the most points at the end of the tournament wins the League.

There are some rules, however.  Please read them carefully:
(in spoiler tags to save space)
Spoiler
Rules

(1) I will start taking predictions for the 36 group stage games from the moment I post the thread in AGS and will continue to accept predictions for group stage games until after all teams have played one game (namely, June 14th is your last chance to submit predictions for group stage games).

(2) The League will be closed to new participants on June 14. This is to allow for late comers, though obviously you may not submit predictions for games that have already been played. It is still worth joining even if you join late, because points in later rounds are worth more.

(3a) Scoring will work like this for each game:

If you predict the correct RESULT you score ONE point (RESULT here means correctly predicting the winning team or correctly predicting a tie/draw).
If you predict the correct SCORE you score THREE points (SCORE here means correctly predicting the actual scoreline).
If you FAIL to make a correct prediction you score NIL points
If you FAIL to submit a prediction for a game before the game's kick-off time, you will LOSE one point***

***You will not be penalised for the games you missed if you joined late, but once you join you will be expected to submit a prediction for all future games, and will be deducted one point for each game you fail to make a prediction for.

(3b) During the knockout stages all points are DOUBLED (so TWO points for correct RESULT or SIX points for correct SCORE). For the FINAL all points will be TRIPLED (THREE for RESULT or NINE for SCORE).  I hope this will add some excitement.

(3c) WILDCARD. Every player will have a WILDCARD to be used for any game during the group stages. This will TRIPLE your score for that game, so use it wisely. To play your WILDCARD, clearly state your intention along with your prediction for the game in question.

(4a) How you submit your predictions is up to you, you can do all 36 group stage games now, before the tournament starts, or you can do them in drips and drabs.  Though, the more you do in one batch the easier the data will be for me to manage. Ideally, you'll submit a nice full list of 36 predictions before the tournament even starts, though this is not a rule.

(4b) Please bear in mind that each prediction must be submitted before the relevant game kicks off, so it is probably wise to get them done early.

(5) The latter knockout stages are, for obvious reasons, closed to predictions during the majority of the group stage.  However, you may start submitting predictions for the outcomes of knockout stage games from the moment the fixture is decided up until the game's kick-off time. I will prompt for relevant predictions when the time comes.

(6) A submission is considered 'submitted' if it has been posted in the AGS thread OR PM'ed to me.  The former will be better if you want to share your predictions with other people, although they will all be visible on the Spreadsheet for anyone to see.  To reiterate, The AGS thread and AGS Private Message are the only two ways to submit predictions.  Predictions received by any other means will not count.

(7) Once you have submitted a prediction for a game, it cannot be changed (unless you can convince me there is an extremely good reason for doing so).

(8a) When submitting predctions please use the following format:

Date     k/oTime   TeamA - v - TeamB

swapping the dashes (*) for the number of goals you think each team will score. For example:

Jun-10   20:00   France   -   vs   -   Romania
Jun-11   14:00   Albania   -   vs   -   Switzerland

(8b) Please use the template provided in Spoiler Tags below. It will help you make your predictions more easily and help me to see them and manage them appropriately.  Preferably, make them bold to make them stand out and easier to manage

(9) Only results after normal time count (90 mins + time added on).  Goals scored during extra time or penalties will not be included. So, if you predicted a 1-1 draw and the game goes on to extra tme and finishes 2-1, you will still win the points provided the score at the regular full-time whistle was 1-1.

(10) Tie-break situations. In the event of a tie-break situation where two teams have the same number of POINTS, the player with the highest number of correct SCORES will win. If they are still level, it will go to the player with the highest number of correct RESULTS. If it is STILL level, the person with the fewest deductions will win. And if it is still level after all that, there will be a fight to the death.

I will be maintaining THIS SPREADSHEET and league table on a publicly viewable document. I will also keep the league table in this first post as updated as possible, though I won't always be able to update things straight away. But rest assured, if you submitted a valid prediction before the deadline, it will count, even if you can't see it reflected in the spreadsheet straight away. It just means I'm probably asleep or at work.  I'm in the Japanese time-zone through this, so please bear with me.

I think that's all for now. Let me know if you have any Queries.

Good Luck and Happy Predicting!

Topic: Jumpin' Jack Flash
This month's guidelines were set by CaptainD, Creamy, Selmiak

The Rolling Stones held a historic free concert in Havana, Cuba, recently, and to commemorate that event the theme for the May MAGS is based around the lyrics of one of their best-loved songs, Jumpin' Jack Flash.

Game must contain:
- The game must feature a character called Jack (doesn't have to be the player character)
- Gas (in whatever form you wish)
- It's all right now (interpret as you wish)

Optional:
- Jack jumps
- Game contains a Toothless, Bearded Hag

Ending: May 31st

Topic: Natural Disaster
This month's guidelines were set by DarkWater

Who doesn't love a good natural disaster movie and rooting for the character/s as they use their wits and what they find around them to try and figure out how to survive/escape from the situation they're in. Whether it be a tidal wave flips your luxury liner (The Poseidon Adventure), you're trapped in a flaming high-rise building (The Towering Inferno), you're hit by earthquakes/flooding (San Andreas, The Day After Tomorrow), or an avalanche has trapped you in a ski resort (Avalanche).
A natural disaster has befallen them, how do they handle it? Can they survive/escape?

* Doesn't not have to be an earth bound disaster, and can include a meteor hitting earth, space station/base on another planet (The Martian).
* Not post-apocalyptic or zombie survival, but can be an end of the world as we know it event.

Ending: April 30th
