Oh my god! It looks so sweet!

Too bad I don't speak the language. But the graphics, man, that's right up my alley.

I have a weird question. How did you manage to make the art looking kinda like stretched out to the sides? What I mean is that the individual "pixels" are not exactly squares, but rather rectangles. Because it looks exactly as classic Sierra games, and they had this "effect". When I wanted to make Sierra backgrounds they looked completely different because they were typical square pixels.

Questions are never stupid... and these are no exception.

1) Uploading it to the AGS DB is enough.
    - All you need to do is: Make the game, upload it, post/register it on the AGS DB. Games are eligeble by registering on the DB date... so if you make and released a game in 2019 but forgot to register it to the DB, your game is not eligible for 2019, but first when you register it.

2) The entire community. Every single AGSer votes for they favorite... all twelve of us...  (laugh)

3) Date isn't set yet, but should be around feb/march?
    - It will soon be announced and we even get to vote for the day and time that works best for us.
    - Also, a new thread will soon be opened where you can "promote" your game and remind AGSers that you did a game this year and in which categories it might apply to. Stay tuned.  :-D

Thanks a lot Cassie!

Been around since 2012, but never participated in AGS awards, always seen only the results months after.

Wow a great thread!

Positives:
- Started working on my book, hopefully finishing it soon
- Released game called Metaphobia https://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/site/games/game/2352/
- Celebrating my daughter's first year
- Found my old-ass laptop on which I used to play most adventure games when I was a kid. Finally I can play on this beauty again.

Negatives:
- Procrastinating with my board game projects
- Working 9-5 takes a lot of time and am not able to work efficiently on my projects. It also takes a lot of time from me which I would love to spend with my family.

Happy new year everyone!

General Discussion / AGS Awards
Mon 30/12/2019 10:00:43
Hello guys,

I have an easy (but maybe stupid) question: How do AGS Awards work?

1) Do we need to upload our games somewhere or simply by registering them on the AGS download page is enough?

2) Who votes for these games? Is it admins/veteran users or the whole community?

3) When and where does this event take place?

Thank you and Happy New Year to everyone! :)

Hello there,

my name is David BroÃ,,ek AKA Thanyx, the writer from Digital Mosaic Games (Metaphobia - https://bit.ly/2ZExgA9) . Our team is looking for a character and animation artist for our upcoming adventure game with project name Castle Dornstein.

The theme of the game is a classic gothic novel-like story. The main inspiration were stories like Dracula, Frankenstein and other pre-victorian/victorian era novels.

This is going to be a commercial project with - revenue-share. More information will be provided in the personal discussion.

We are using 320x200 resolution so our characters should be standard types for this scale. See examples below (These pictures are just to exemplify the scale and complexity of characters not the theme):

STORY
It is middle of the 19th century. Hemlock, a Prague University Librarian is invited to a famous and very beloved noble Dornstein family in Castle Dornstein in order to translate a mysterious book from medieval latin to German/Czech. The book is called Deorum Historia Orbis Terrarum or The History of the Gods of Earth, and was written by a crazy medieval monk Gregorovitz who claimed was forced to write this book by devil himself.
When Hemlock arrives to the castle however, he becomes rather suspicious of the place. The book he is suppose to study is all of the sudden missing and the residents of the castle start acting strangely.
Hemlock completely changes his view on Dornsteins when he hears local rumors from the nearby villagers about the family, recently deceased Lady Dornstein and the castle itself. The situation even worsens when his personal items are starting to disappear...

PROGRESS

Check out a new video by Jonas Tyroller about the communication during development of Metaphobia.

There you can learn about "How To Find & Manage a GAME DEV TEAM Online". And there you can also see some concept art as well as some greenscreen videos with actors which Tolga, our artist, used for the animations.

This game is an amazing resume piece for a commercial game. It required an impossible amount of effort to get all the rotoscoping done, obviously, you even have separate animations for opening top and bottom drawers FFS when this could have easily been fudged, but...

MASSIVE SPOILER ALERT!!!

Spoiler
I do get the feeling that it was written as the game progressed, which is fine for an indie game.

But this also means some jarring moments, especially in a game developed over a long time-frame:

There was so much charming dialog with Patti, the daughter at the beginning, getting to know and learn of her relationship with her father, and then we never get to interact with or see her again. (well except to show her stuff)

There was a lot of exposition of Judy and our relationship and a mystery about why we just ran away. This is never addressed again and Judy just vanishes at the end.

I'm guessing there were plotlines imagined with them that never got fully developed and then they just fell through the floor in the rush to get the damn thing finished? But you didn't have the heart to go cut out all the initial relationship exposition and the effort that went into it?

The puzzles: Some were great, some were intuitive, some were...ummm filler?

I felt that most of the puzzles kept the fun level of the game up there, and you did limit the areas of searching for answers to puzzles to the bare minimum, which helped.

But, in an investigative game, I feel that the puzzles should be based on that element and not weird stuff like making a fake mustache that the character could just go to a shop and buy. I even have money in my inventory to do so with.

If you're gonna go with the evaporated coffee solution at least let there be two alternatives. The second being using the character's kitchen without the excuse of "That would stink up the whole apartment.".

On the flip-side of the coin, I felt that the puzzles in the museum in Iran were just right, as the character is out of his element and has to make do with what he has on him. Very fun!

The translation puzzles were exactly what I wanted them to be! Perfect! Gabriel Knight vibes plus the unexpected multiple symbols and additional hints in the museum brochure. I thought the final translation puzzle to be a masterpiece!

The ending: I would have preferred (and kept looking for) a way out of our character's eventual fate. During the final cutscene I was on the alert for an inventory option to pop up to allow me to do something other than just watch. I was thinking I would pour the alien blood sample into the goblet just before being forced to drink it and that would make me more powerful than the master, or something like that.

But no, it just ended. Which is fine. It was an amazing game and I hope it leads you guys onto greater things that you actually get paid for and thus have the (extra headaches and) luxury to develop to the max.

Thanks for the great time!

Thank you very much for your comprehensive review. Much appreciated. Also...

Spoiler
As I already mentioned, our game tried to accomplish something that hasn't been done that many times so far - true lovecraftian hopelessness. Our hero has been destined to be doomed. Not everyone likes it, but we do and so do many others. I very much appreciate your opinion on this matter as we really want to know how all the players feel about our decisions.

I restarted my game and it worked...
Spoiler
The first time I played through I gave the man the phone book before talking to the librarian, and it wouldn't let me talk to him anymore. This time I talked to the librarian first and then gave the man the phonebook and then it worked.

I'm glad it worked eventually. As Vincent already mentioned we tested the game and no one was able to replicate this error.

Thanks a lot for playing our game!

I'm really sorry to hear that my friend. It truly seems like a one time glitch. We have tried to find what is going on but no one has ever got to the same situation as you did.

We are looking for kind testers who could give us some quality feedback :)

Thank you all for your feedback we appreciate it very much:-)

@CyberUncleCat
I know what you mean. But... The thing is that we are not "afraid" of not being commercially successful, but we want our game to be free purposly. I know it's a good thing to make some money, but if we wanted to do that we would have thought about this in the very beginning. And since we have wanted it to be free game from the beginning, we stuck to that form.

About voices: we would love to implement this feature in the future, as a "Deluxe version" but this is whole another project.

Hello,

I'm not sure if I understand your question correctly. But in general, if you want to add a code inside a dialog, you can just SPACE or TAB to a side and start writing.
When you tab or space in dialog section in AGS it will start writing a code.

Example:
Code: ags

@S
Ego: Hello
Guy: Hi

1@
Ego: How are you?
Guy: Im fine.

    cYou.Walk(120, 35)
    cYou.FaceDirection(eDirectionLeft)

Ego: I like your picture on the wall.
Guy: Yeah, I painted it.

Dear Wyz,

Thank you thousand times!

You helped me a lot, it works perfectly :)

Hello,

Im not sure where should I post this thread, since it related to AGS forum itself.

Long story short:
I need to add a video on my AGS forum thread, but not only the link but the video should be playable in the article itself.
I think I've seen it somewhere but cannot find the way to do it.
