General Discussion / Re: Cancer(?)
Tue 30/05/2006 06:43:19
Just on Smoking Warnings on packs, Australia has just started new warnings with graphical images rather than just words.

The images are quite disturbing (warning, contains gangrene) http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/2639/warn7kz.jpg

This image is the full back of the packet, there is also a smaller version of the image on the front of the pack. They are not all about cancer as this one shows, but it really makes you think a bit harder about quitting than just "Your Smoking Can Harm Others", or "Smoking Causes Heart Disease" or "Lung Cancer" etc

The problem with Cancer, and a lot of it being hereditary, is the fact people can procreate with defective genes long before being effected by the cancer. Basically meaning it's spread through most gene pools over the world and it would be quite strange if you have never known anyone personally effected by it.

There are many cancers, caused by many things eg. sun, food, gene's etc, there isn't enough research to know yet about mobile phones, but I guess any extra radiation can contribute, hey maybe if used correctly the mobile phones can stop the growth of a tumor with its own radiotherapy

Is it possible that the frequency of cancer hasn't really increased, but our awareness of it has?

this is probably quite true in some respects, as I remember some famous painting (not sure which one) of a nude woman shows that she has well developed breast cancer, but in those days they probably had no idea, when she died, what caused it.

but it would also be exponentially getting worse with genetical one's, and skin cancers especially in Australia with the hole in the ozone layer and lots of european decendents.

It's sad to hear Andail, but you are not alone, and I'm sure pleanty of peole on the forums have lost loved one's to cancer, or possibly had or have a form of cancer themselves. The thing for sure is some of us on the forums will, sorry to put a downer on an already down topic, but it's just part of life

Great stuff guys, looks and sounds excellent, top quality stuff (apart from the bugs)

didn't find any new ones excpet maybe some of the text says Use this with that, or look here etc but you can still walk to somewhere else with this text being displayed (no specifics but it pretty much happens anywhere [not a serious issue but a bit of scripting polish])

I also agree about the lack responses from clicking on objects, at least have a random unhandled event response.

Spoiler

quite a few places where you click to walk somewhere and it takes you to the wrong place eg. at the tents, click the tower thing and end up in left tent, click to go between tents to the guard and end up in the command tent etc
[close]

And when it comes towards the final release, I'd suggest quite a few more beta testers, cause we all know that people round here like to pick stuff to death, and they are the prime candidates for the jobs (and I'm not putting my hand up)
#165
That's pretty sad, still has no bids though, I also noticed this that they're selling

"Open A U.S Bank Account - Special for Non U.S Residents"

Seems like they're selling Spam they got in their emails

Seems like a dodgey seller, the other games are probably copies

It's all new now with a lot of injuries and retirements, especially Joey, Finch played allright, did his job, but if Joey had decided to play, there would be no need for a field goal to win the match, cause they would have been up by 40 points

I totally agreed with something Fatty said tonight, QLD need to move Lockyer to fullback, Thurston to 5/8, can't remember who he had at halfback, but the point is, Lockyer is best fullback in the game and is not a 5/8, I still don't know why they persist with him there

and Fluke, There's usually a thread each year, you even started one last year for origin 2
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=21318.0

and there's one from 2004 http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=14267.0

There was one either that year or 2003 where Ultimo posted pics of him and his mates in Blue face paint.

Quality of the games, players and crowds goes up and down over the years, its probably in a rebuilding phase for both teams at the moment.

Hope QLD win the second to make it interesting

It's funny, I don't really care too much about eurovision, but it was about 1 of 3 acts I saw, and I pissed my self laughing thinking, as if they will win with all those blonde bimbos against them, but they did win.

Quite funny, It was more enjoyable and memorable, than the others I saw, well done to them

Just got back from seeing The Living End http://thelivingend.com/

I've seen them many many times over the last decade, first saw em in the front bar of a pub for free in 1995, now you pay much more and have thousands in the crowd at bigger venues, I'm not sure which I prefer, usually the less crowded, but this gig they played for 1hr 45 mins and I wanted it to go on longer even though I was busting for a piss most of the gig.

They play all over the world so if you ever get the chance, I would recommend going, awesome live show, easily one of the best live bands in the world. (They're on the Warped tour in July/August for any one in the USA)

probably a bit off topic anyway, but the new Chili Peppers double album is awesome, took me a while to get into it, seeing as finding the time to listen to over 2hrs of music many times over takes quite a while, but it really grows on you. They are an incredible band.

One of the best bands ever that no one has heard of, or probably ever will again as they split up about 10 years ago, is The Fireballs, who were a Heavy Psychobily band from Melbourne. (no, not the old rock 'n' roll swing band)

The best thing about them was the fact having a Double Bass in a Heavy band makes them heavier than any band Ever, none of this loosen the bass strings shit, you really have to hear a double bass in a metal band to appreciate how good it can sound, deeper and darker than bliss, especially with the click of a slapping a double bass.

The guys also had pretty big Quiffs (extremely exaggerated Elvis hair) much like the Leningrad Cowboys who I've noticed someone has an avatar with possibly one of the members

Is this thread really this old? seems like yesterday, just happened to find it on a search, so I figured I may as well revive it.

Just wondering if anyone round the globe heard anything about the trapped miners in Tasmania that were freed yesterday from a collapse about 1km underground

They were trapped for 14 days and it was about 6 days before it was known they were alive, then another 8 days to drill in and get them out.

It was major news here, pretty much all the news for the last 2 weeks, and the typical story that will be made into a movie at some stage. No Australian has posted about it, I was just wondering if it made any headlines elsewhere.

Mine are song lyrics from a band back in the 90's called The Sharp#

The avatar contains 2 footy teams I support from 2 different codes of footy, with an elite Hacksaw (1337 H4xx0r) in between

Silly Debate about freedom, as it is impossible to judge as it is totally up to what you think feedom is as suggested in this thread.

I agree with Farlander in the fact we can't measure it.

I live in a pretty free country, if not one of the most free in the world, and when it comes down to it, (as with any country) different States, Counties, Province's, Councils have different rules or laws that contradict even the major laws of the country, making it even more impossible to judge.

As with feeling safe walking streets, anywhere, it depends where you are specifically.

I know in Sydney where I live there is almost a drive by shooting everyday (according to the media) which was never even heard of a few years ago (or not reported in the media) but these, generally, are usually in very specific areas. I know I'm safe around where I live (until some wanker feels the need to go on a killing spree)

Oh yeah, I've never been overseas, but as with the position and size of my country (and budget) I've probably been to the equivalent of most of Europe or Most of America etc, which has nothing to do with this topic.

So I can't comment on experience of Freedoms, but I feel comfortable.

The only thing I can see more free in the USA is the gun laws (which in turn is the oldest excuse in the history of existance[which causes less freedom more death and more gaol {jail} than anywhere else [freedom, i think not]) Still having states with the Death penalty makes it even less free, who has the right to take a single life, especially supposedly christain people.

The only other thing I can think of is the freedom to vote (which is really the freedom not to vote) which is used and abused by polititians, which is how people like Bush can get power [freedom, I think not]

There are many flaws in the interpretation of freedom, it only exists in apple crumble with extra crumble

It didn't even look as though Bush understood what he was talking about, I'm sure he had it translated to him later. The crowd seemed a bit reluctant to laugh, I'd say they were a bit unsure whether they should, pretty emotionless crowds in political settings, they don't like giving anything away.

I think Colbert held back a bit more than he could have

An Indonesian paper printed this cartoon not long ago just after the Danish one, it's the Australian Prime Minister and Foreign Minister as copulating dingos

The only reaction from the Australian public was a bit of laughter, and John Howard hiding the picture it was based on.

1) quite possibly, scary thought

2) No way, in this day and age, really bad idea, how many wars are caused by this type of thing (pretty much all of them)

3) That's the biggest mistake in history, they have nothing in common, it's just that a lot of people in politics are religious

4) eat a custard tart, smoke a cigarette, have a few beers, yawn, and go to sleep

Thinking about religion too much can cause more problems than drugs and alcohol, (as proven by society [everywhere]{which in turn leads to more people turning to drugs and alcohol})

There is no way to prove whether any religion is right, it is just taught to believe without question (the evil part) so when it comes down to it, nobody knows the answers, that's why there is debate all over the world, that leads to anger, which leads to war, which leads to how much oil costs, which leads to war etc

There are pleanty of non christian (non religious) people that carry the same values and morals without having to beat themselves up over living up to unreal expectations.

Live life as it comes, we don't know what's around the corner, but that's one of the beauties of living in this world.

Just enjoy what comes your way (unless it's a wmd), if you think "oh, i'm giving into temptation" then think again, who is really judging you??????????

.....nah....I won't say anything

hehe, I guess I was fooled by not bothering to download it, assuming it was a joke, and not knowing who ILuvBlowJobs was.

I guess I'll have to start from BJ1, I can't remember if I've played any of them yet, I haven't had the urge to play any AGS game for quite a while (or commercial game)

At least I have something to look forward to one day

I haven't been this disappointed since the Tierra guys pulled that mean prank about having released a speech pack for KQ2.  It was a 25MB download for Christ's sake - and I just spent four hours downloading it on my 28k dial-up connection before discovering the truth.

But They did release the speech pack on that day and everyone thought it was a joke, but it was actually real, that's how I remember it anyway (it's all quite vague, but they did release the speech pack some time around then, maybe just after, just to rub it in to those 28kers)

Re: Daylight savings ... it's -way- easier to simply get used to the different light levels than it is to change the time of entire regions/countries

I do agree that it is easier to get used to the light levels, and I hate when daylight savings starts, just getting used to getting up an hour earlier is hard to get used to.

a few hours (ie jetlag) is easier to get used to cause it's a more obvious defined change, just trying to get up 1 hour earlier is hard for me, cause I just keep hitting snooze and end up just starting work an hour late, it took me about 6 weeks last time to get used to it.

but the advantage lies on the other side when you get to sleep in an extra hour. If only I just kept working on daylight saving hours all year, i'd be able to start work early, and finish in the middle of the day more often.

I just like Daylight savings, it reminds that summer is here, but damn it now winter is coming and it might drop below 20C
#178
It's opposite in the Southern Hemisphere as usual (in the parts that have daylight saving), we are just about to go back to normal time after being in Daylight savings for the last 5 months in the south east of Australia (even longer in Tasmania). If you search google as I did the other day you can find out the dates that everyone changes.

I thought it was strange cause it usually ends at 3am on the last Sunday in March but my computer didn't tell me it had changed (as it usually does), I asked a neighbour and he told me that because of the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, they moved it back a week (and strangely enough Microsoft knew this and had an update without me knowing)

Is there any way to correct this glitch? If not, just uh... write some official warning or something. :D

It's hardly a glitch as the worlds time doesn't centre around the US and as this forum is based from the UK, that is what time it should use.

Obviously Edmundo you must base your clock around the AGS forums time, I suggest having a look in you're profile:

click on profile up the top, on the left under Modify your profile there is Look and Layout Preferences Then you should notice Time Offset:

This will set your time to the correct time where you live if you adjust it properly,

you will still have to adjust when daylight savings is out of wack, but seeing as you are completely aware of the differences of time, I'm wondering the point.

Quote from: Kinoko on Tue 28/03/2006 01:27:11
This whole thread is ridiculous because everyone knows daylight savings is a stupid thing in the first place. There are differences in light levels in different seasons - get over it, world.

I disagree, the closer you are to the equator you are, there is less reason to have it,

It is only a psychological thing anyway, cause you don't gain any extra hours of light or anything,

but as far as it goes in Sydney in summer the sun comes up way too early which tricks people, so instead of readjusting the times you go to work, it's easier to just change the clock. (which in turn does adjust the time you go to work, but you don't get busted for being late, or locked out for being early [and you have an excuse if you wound your clock the wrong way])

and at the other end of the scale, I've just noticed over the last few weeks I have to put my headlights on when driving to work, but in a weeks time because of the adjustment I won't have to put my lights on.

So basically it just keeps the 9-5 people happy and their offices running smoothly

We also get to sleep in an extra hour Next Monday

Aus $10
1 packet of cigarettes (less than 1 pack from a servo or vending machine)

or

2.5 local beers at local pub

or

between 8-9 Litres of unleaded petrol

or

a Banana since Larry wiped out most of the nations crops

To me $10 is not much

nb currently:

AUD$10 = USD$7.19 = CAD$8.38 = EURâ,¬5.96 = GBP£4.12

GBP£10 = AUD$24.26 = USD$17.44 = CAD$20.34 = EURâ,¬14.45

EURâ,¬10 = GBP£6.92 = AUD$16.79 = USD$12.06 = CAD$14.07

CAD$10 = EURâ,¬7.11 = GBP£4.92 = AUD$11.93 = USD$8.57

USD$10 = CAD$11.67 = EURâ,¬8.29 = GBP£5.74 = AUD$13.92

I tried one trick, not to get rid of the banner but just so it wouldn't show on the page, it was a banner on the top of the page so with some simple html, at the top of each page I put something like this

<a name="point">

and with the buttons to each page i used a link something like this

<a href="about.html#point">

so all it did was when the new page was loaded, it made the banner at the top be above the top of screen, you could still scroll up to the banner but it wouldn't initially be in view and made the page look normal.

I used it with lycos, but some time after that they put ads in a frame down the right side, so I just gave up and used adblock with my browser
