A couple of years ago I turned off & unplugged everything from the mains during a close thunder storm but forgot the cable modem cable was still connected.
[an important note: don't just switch off the switch at the wall, pull out all the plugs to the computer (electrical appliance) because a surge can still easily go through a switch that is turned off]
as a result, it fried my network card, I had a spare but it made me think.
I used to have a UPS but it died.
Just as what you should do with all your AGS games in production, make sure you back up everything (not just another copy on another connected HD) keep it/them in different locations to rule out different methods of random destruction.
eg. your house burns down with your computer, and 5 backups (one in each room)
you can always get a new computer, but losing important data can be a C#%t. not that I have cause I always backup (so far)
