Er, no, it doesn't work like that.  They can't sue you for using a standard word just because it's their name.  They registered the trademark so that other companies can't be named "Virgin."

No, it wasn't just a trade mark, they tried to go a step further but I don't think they pulled it off. But it wasn't like the example I gave, that was a joke, but I can't really back up this rumour and I don't know in what uses they wanted ownership of the word.

I don't know the law exactly as it's different in different countries/places/states

but as far as I know, you don't physically register or pay for copyrights, copyrights are free and start at the time you create whatever it is.

Eg. If you write something original it is copyright automatically, same if you draw something, take a photo, come up with any idea, compile an original list of web links, and many other things (unless you sign the rights over to someone else, eg. if you work for a magazine, it might be in your contract that every photo you take for work belongs to them.)

It's different with Trade Marks & I don't know the details but it costs money.

But there is something else I'm not sure what it is but must cost money as I think Virgin tried to do it. So no one could use the word virgin except them. Fucken wankers imagine if you were in the playground at school and you said 'hey **** is a virgin', you could be sued by them. As if you can own a word for use by you only.   I think that might of been a bit of bullshit, but anyway.

(and you don't need to include the "©" symbol as it is just used as a reminder that what you are looking at is copyright.)

Edit: and in music, Lyrics & Music are seperate copyrights

The Fast and the Furious

If that's that pathetic car movie, It basically followed the exact story in almost everyway of Point Break, substituting surfboards for cars, bank jobs for some other bizarre robbery (which I don't even remember what it was for)

But I love Point Break.

It really depends on if you're working on the games 15hrs a day 7 days a week or 2 hours a day 2 days a week (or somewhere in either side)

It took me around 3 months to make Larrywilco 17 room game medium length, working pretty long hours.

I made a MAGS game in about 3 weeks, working pretty hard but not over the top.

I've been working on an LSL3 conversion for the last 14 months, but have varied in length of time working on it, for the first 9 months I worked really hard on it as I was working only part-time in a job and sometimes spent days working on the game for 15hrs or so and did at least something every day (appart from a few days or weeks off here and there)

Now that I'm working fulltime in a job that's physically draining (eg. walking 8hours a day) I don't have as much mental capacity to sit in front of a computer for as long, so It's only slowly progressing at the moment.

Everyone takes different amounts of time, and are more efficient in different areas. Also take into consideration your planning and length of game, There's no real gauge for how long it takes, cause there's too many variables.

It just takes as long as it takes, but don't give up, it's worth it in the end.

I've been working on this damn 13 room game since October of this year.

and since you've been time travelling maybe if you start it now you'll finish it by then.

They rented "The Outsiders" & "Rumble Fish" as Sofi's dad never let her watch his creations (well Susan Eloise Hinton did write the books)

That's interesting, I was sure I remembered something from school about English being about 70 odd% from Latin. I could be wrong, or maybe the others are just a higher percentage?

While we're on accents, on a slightly related topic, there are many languages that are based from Latin, eg. English, French, Italian etc and they are all very different, if you know one it doesn't mean you can understand the other.

What I was wondering was how different are languages like, Spanish, Mexican & Portuguese?

or Swedish, Finnish & Norwegian?

are they completely different, or can you understand certain things without having to learn a whole new language?

Just on the topic of an ad on Genital Herpes, It's funny how they act all happy like it's cool to have it, but then they talk about still having sex with condoms to prevent it from spreading.

Sure it's good to be safe, but I still wouldn't like to trust condoms, eventually if you have enough sex (and I'm talking about the same partner) it becomes more likely to spread (that goes for other std's especially ones that cant be treated)

On another note, I always thinks it's pretty silly about an anti smoking ad that shows a "Healthy Lung" being cut up showing how pink and clean it is, then pouring tar over it showing how much tar a smoker will fill their lungs with.

My point being what was this "Healthy Lung" doing outside of the body on a chopping board????? just shows that healthy people can die too, so you might as well smoke while you still can. (but it's best not to start)

There's sort of a country aus accent that's different to the city, but I have them both depending on who I'm talking to. The country ones a bit more layed back and contains more non offensive swearing like ending something with fuckya or cunt. none of this 'eh' shit, fuckya

Tasmanian accents can be very different all over, but the fuckdest one was that stupid chick that won the last 'big brother', that was so irratating, the type of voice that would make you want to destroy their vocal cords.

There was a NZ chick in my year at school, I loved the way she called me 'Tm'. It is similar to the aus accent but to us it's very different cause we don't hear the bits that sound the same, and the differences stand out.

most bouncers in sydney are either Maori, Tongan, Samoan, or other South Pacific Islander, they're all friggin huge, but their accents are probably even stronger sometimes, but I like it.

I can only tell different accents in English though, I'm sure there's all sorts of accents in Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Finish, Swedish, Swahili etc, but I couldn't pick it up.

But trying to understand a strong Indian accent (an English one) can sometimes be really difficult, and they speak english. Much stronger than Apu style.

Accents can be really interesting.

Just on another note, Accents are continually evolving, I don't know if it's the same everywhere but looking at old footage of tv or movies, the accents are different from today.

I notice this with old Australian footage, it sounds closer to  an English accent, same with old American footage.

I guess with more communication with the rest of the world eventually the accents will get closer. It happens so slowly you don't notice it, although I guess in some isolated parts it still will still be different.

Those goddamn cheaply made ads about warehouse sales that are always narrated by a screaming maniac who never takes a breath. We get them every now and again in Brisbane advertising for a certain bunch of crap being sold cheaply at the convention centre (a very nice place really, not a warehouse at all). I just have to push mute when they come on, or change the channel until I'm -sure- it's over.

Yep, we get those same ones in Sydney, they have them in FOX studios, and as DG said they extend for about 3 weeks and get cheaper and cheaper. I've never been though. They have to be out cause the next thing starts there, but days later they're still open pleading you to come and take their usesless crap.

I guess they just move around the capital cities constantly with neverending stock.

MMMmmm wonder If I could get him to be the narrator for my next game?

Great stuff Kinoko,

I just got round to playing it, and it was very impressive, played it all through in one sitting, got stuck a few times but eventually fuggered it all out.

I enjoyed the story and loved the attitude of Alexander (except for his feelings for cricket) excellent job, and I'll be looking forward to whatever else you decide to release, keep up the great work.

They're also lucky with being able to sell that many hint books, now with the internet all you have to do is search LSL hints or walkthru and the answers are there.

As for the name Sierra Online, I think at some stage they did have their own BBS that you could log into, before the days of the internet.

As for the virus rumor, I never heard it, but that could explain the whereabouts of my 8086, oh wait, that was damn thieves, and it contained the only version of a game I made in GW Basic, damnit.

General Discussion / Re:Kill Bill Vol. 2
Sun 25/04/2004 04:29:28
I just saw it last night, I refrained from reading this thread till now just incase I got a spoiler.

I enjoyed it better than the first one, I'm not a big fan of overdrawn fight scenes.

The first was good in it's own ways but I was glued to my seat the whole way through vol.2, it wasn't too slow. Infact the ways she finished off the rest of the crew were way more inventive, I loved what happened to Elle, I can't believe it wasn't so obviously going to happen.

I've never been able to decide if Uma is attractive or not, she is sometimes and isn't others but that's what I like about her, she's closer to an average looking person but there's still something about her. She has unusual proportions, but it's hard to tell as I've never seen her in real life. Is she tall or short?

Carradine was great I thought, and was probably mainly chosen for his voice.

What is great about the movie is that you know exactly what is going to happen before you even see the 1st movie, yet you have no idea how it's going to fit together, so how can you spoil it by putting things out of sequence, I guess the training during the grave scene could have been put somewhere less obvious, like in vol.1 but appart from that the sequences were spot on.

and as usual QT has all his Cameo performers, I bet he loved the fact he got Sonny Chiba for vol 1, and If only he had Samuel L Jackson in Reservoir dogs he'd be in all the ones he directed, he was also in True Romance which QT wrote and Sonny Chiba was mentioned in that too.

I'd like to see it all in one showing, I'll probably do that on dvd.

I also thought Vivica A. Fox was pretty sexy, The way QT operates, she'll probably star in one of his movies down the line. Her name almost sounds like a pornstar name, aah so that's where I've seen her before.

This was a classic staring Christopher Atkins & Kristy McNicol, it was filmed in Australia too, I've been to the mansion that was the castle in the movie.

Now this fits into the category

The cows are actually australian they are just owned by an american company so we don't import the beef & don't think we ever have?

That company might have changed though now, I'm not really up to date (or really care)

Maccas are trying to be open about what is actually in all their products, and I saw a sign yesterday saying 100% real beef or something along those lines, but then again it's still processed beef.

There's a lot of rumours about what's in their products, as long as I'm not eating too much spit, semen or urine, I'll be happy

What I've learnt is you wont find anything by taking drugs, you'll never get that ultimate hit once you're addicted, and there's no real reason to keep doing it, except to stop you feeling like doing it. Then your tollerance goes up and you need more. It cost too much money, and even more when your tollerance goes up.

I can also argue a lot about prescbribed drugs and the ignorant doctors that prescribe them but I don't feel like getting into that again.

If you don't have an addictive personality you are much safer, eg. if you smoke, it's probably best not to get mixed up in any other drugs.

I've tried to become an alcoholic but I have never succeeded, which I'm glad about.

I've smoked for longer than some people on these forums have been alive which is scarey, I'm still fairly fit but cancer & heart disease is the real issue.

All I can say is just be careful if you are going to experiment with them, they can make you feel better than most experiences that you will have, but that's only the beginning, eventually you'll wish you chose to go to the gym or something else instead, and that's Guaranteed.

I have completed numerous Tafe courses including the one I think Ultimo is doing, haven't done any study since 2000.

I run my own business but I try my hardest not to get any work in it anymore cause I hate being my own boss.

I have also started many courses that I haven't finished eg. Nursing at uni, Park Management at Tafe, PC Support at Tafe.

But recently I fucked everything off and got a job where I work for someone else.

I'm a Meter Reader for a co. called 'Field Force' on a Sydney Water contract, which means I walk for about 8 hours a day reading water meters, which includes finding the damn things buried in overgrown gardens, fighting vicious dogs, and getting very fit.

It's great, it keeps me outdoors all day away from a computer, the good thing is that it's 2 months on 1 month off, so I get a 4 week holiday every quarter, and I can also choose to work during that month off in country areas all expenses paid (they have contracts in some very nice locations eg. Byron Bay which is a coastal town on the furthest right middle edge of the east coast of Australia [but it's sort of a popular hippy druggo place too])

I'm enjoying my work for the first time in ages, and when I come home I don't have to think about anything.
