This is probably where money comes into it as usual. These players get payed more money than they'll ever need, but because they get this money they are forced to earn it. Even if they aren't fit, sometimes they'll play because they are basically told they have to. They play with injections sometimes (which I think must be performance enhancing since if they didn't have it they would be in agony and maybe not even able to walk)

It comes down to being the fans fault for making it popular, and the medias fault for getting fans interested. The players are just people like you and me that just happen to be good at something that is popular.

People die everyday, It's part of the life cycle, fuck it, if they die, life will go on elsewhere, you could be next...... yes you!!

Man, this is why Adventure Games need to become popular again, this is our duty to make it so these nuts start walking round the street and start picking up banana peels, donuts, and metal rods to combine to make a fishing rods, instead of shooting people.

Because of these FPS games, people are getting sick of them cause they're so boring that they have to go and live it for real, that with the combination of gun laws and the state of the current world.

I hope that you remain safe Panda, but with your current ninja skills you should be able to catch the bullets.

I'm just happy I live in a safe country (except for the fact that there have been a large number of drive by shootings & and other shootings of late in Sydney, but not in my local area)

General Discussion / Re:Insomnia ...
Sun 15/02/2004 14:15:41
I can't say I suffer from Insomnia, although I'm regularly here at 4:30am, it's more of a lifestyle thing, I'm a night person. And due to the fact at the moment I'm working odd times with no secure job & different jobs, My sleep patterns are screwed up.

I've been doing some postie work (post man) lately and that starts at 5:30am and that's almost opposite to my normal hours.

I seem to be able to adjust alright and can work fine after a couple of hours sleep.

I have been an insomniac in the past, but that was mainly due to withdrawal effects from that mary jane creature. probably for about 5 years at different times I went through withdrawing as often as I wasn't which fucked up my sleep patterns, bad stomach cramps and the inability to eat, and for a months afterwards I only slept a few hours when I really didn't notice, kind of like the description in fight club where he's never fully asleep and never really awake.

I have no real solution to the problem, just stay awake until you sort of feel tired and lie down.

I still have trouble getting to sleep these days, (usually takes 1-2 hours each night) but once I'm asleep I can sleep up to 10 hours, but usually between 6 & 8.

Those thoughts that keep running through your head can be real bastards, I usually listen to music as I go to sleep, but I know that can be a problem if you have a partner that can't sleep with music going. [also sometimes I catch myself tapping or singing along to the music in my head & that probably helps keep me awake]

I guess I'm an insomniac that has a semi-workaround.

I wouldn't recommend taking sleeping pills as the more you take the less effect they have on you and the resulting withdrawal from them is also insomnia, which strangely enough is one of the side effects of almost any drug.

My theory is that Insomnia is related to you not being quite right, something seems to bug you and you can't pin-point what it actually is, it's all psychological, you just need some assurance of stable security of the mind and sleep will become easy.

but that is easier said than done, cause thinking about all this will keep you awake anyway.

I hate people that can just lie down and fall asleep straight away, I don't know how it is physically possible, but I've witnessed it.

I guess exercise can help, it probably also makes you feel better about yourself and clears your mind, but it also exhausts you.

My ex-brother inlaw used to be an exercise freak, he'd be at the gym before work, then ride his bike to work, swim in his luch break, and then go to the gym after work, then ride home. that inbetween hockey training and games on the weekend, he also worked fulltime and uni part-time at night. He used to fall asleep at the drop of a hat all the time & and I could see why.

If you were an insomniac after that sort of exercise, you've really got a problem.

Also if you used to be really active, and the computer lifestyle sort of screwed that up for you, it may be the fact that you still eat the same way you did, but don't compensate for the burning of that energy that you used to, therefore that energy is keeping you awake.

Or you can just reas what I've written about 5 times and you'll probably start getting tired and fall asleep at the keyboard.

Ah, it's time for a smoke, still early, it's only 1:15am

Edit:
I love going outside for a smoke at night, I feel like I'm friends with all the local nocturnal creatures, I always see possums & bats, ocassionally owls, and the soothing sound of crickets, frogs, the occasional toot from owls, the strange squeak that possums make. Bats can be annoying during mating season, but I love the swooping sound of them flying about. Usually before I fall asleep the Kookaburra's start laughing at dawn.

It's funny at the start of Raiders of the Lost Arc, they're in South America or wherever and they have the sound effect of Kookaburra's in the jungle, It's funny cause most people wouldn't notice it, but it's a really distinctive Australian sound. They also use the sound effect in The Wizard of Oz.

Edit 2: Also if you are a smoker, I suppose, as it is a stimulant, it can keep you awake that little bit extra, especially if you have a cigarette before bed each night. I really should quit, I almost did 10 years ago, but I keep forgetting to.

It does seem strange that these healthy people are dying, but I don't know if it's a trend on the info you've provided.

eg. the one that died at the dentist, what was the cause, did the dentist slip and accidently drill throw his skull, did he have a reaction to a drug the dentist gave him, did he have a heart attack or something unrelated?

There could be a new drug out there or people that are ill informed about the drugs out there.

More sports are professional these days, which means there is more money and people involved. There are pleanty of elite athletes out there but there are also some that are just outside that elite level and take enhansing drugs. This may lead to more deaths.

Also with more people involved, there will be more deaths from natural things. eg. It doesn't matter how fit you are if you have a hereditary heart problem or cancer.

These things tend to happen, whether it is actually some weird thing, only time will tell (or it will get covered up by governing bodies) but it could all just be coincidence or the percentage is the same compared to the past.

I really don't know, just thought I'd put my thoughts down

I've never been a big fan of the day, although I haven't had many good experiences on the particular day.

The good one I remember was when I broke up with a girl on Valentine's day, It felt really good, ultimatest feel good break up ever.

It is used as a capitalists excuse to cash in, but it ain't no Holiday over here (if meaning having a day off for it [although it falls on a sat this year])

I only see one good thing about it, it is a day that can be used for single people to get the courage up to ask someone out, of course they can do that any day, but sometimes it can just be the excuse they were looking for to try their luck.

Which reminds me I should take some of my own advise sometimes.

As for Couples, the day shouldn't mean anything, I don't know much about the history as I couldn't give a shit, but I always thought it was about singles trying their luck (and usually anonymously), couples can do that soppy shit anytime.

I think couples have now completely stolen this day, and completely changed the face of it. (obviously that's where the marketing has come in to change it to cash in) it would be hard to make money counting on singles to buy cards etc, so why not change it to a day for couples to buy shit for each other, that will get us heaps more money.

And I've got an Ex-girlfriends wedding to go to on Valentine's day tomorrow. Hopefully there will be some single girls to take advantage of the day, and a wedding is usually a good place to pick up chicks. Nah, that's not the way I operate, but I can't dismiss the chance of meeting someone, it's time to get back in the pond.

Been bloody hot everyday for a while now, still thunderstorms almost everyday, still not a lot of rain with them.

Tonight is the biggest awards show, don't worry about these fake Oscars or Grammy Awrards they are too subjective, these are pretty much performance based so you get a real outcome.

The Allan Border Medal, Crickets night of nights in Australia.

My Predictions:

One Day player of the Year: Ricky Ponting

Test player of the Year: Ricky Ponting

The Allan Border Medal: Ricky Thomas Ponting

well, I don't think I even have to watch it, If I'm wrong, the awards are Rigged

Edit: well it's all over and my predictions were not correct but I was fairly close

Actual Results:

One Day player of the Year: Adam Gilchrist
Ponting was a close second equal with Brett Lee, so it was closer than I thought

Test player of the Year: Ricky Ponting

The Allan Border Medal: Ricky Ponting

Congrats to all the winners, good to see some other games get a bit more recognition, and some other engines games get some publicity

and Ratracer, simple answer to why Pilot Light & Simbrothel: Whorecraft didn't get much of a chance. It's usually games by fairly familiar people that seem to win awards, not necessarily the best games (take nothing away from the winners, they were deserved), but these two games were not really pimped on the forums much, and Simbrothel obviously being in Italian & no pimping whatsoever it's understandable. (I haven't finished it cause I didn't know what I was doing)

Pilot Light on the other hand was an outstanding release to the same extent as Apprentice yet hasn't got nearly the acclaim. It is no doubtedly the fact that blender81 has only made 4 posts in these forums and they were only in the games actual thread. For a game made in 2 weeks, Imagine what blender81 could do, maybe that's why he/she is not posting & busilly working on a master piece.

Pimping can only help if it's a good game (bar Ace Quest, Larry Vales etc), but it does help a good game get more popular, so everyone go and play these games.

hehe thanks, it aint the snow rain plugin I'm used to seeing

That trailer looks great, it seems to sell the game with false pretenses though, with the music, AGI games can't have that quality (beeps).

but it looks like a game worth playing, although I tried it on my computer, and the intro works fine, but after the intro the game seems to only show every second line and flickering (where the helicopter you're controling is)

unless it's some kind of effect, I'm not sure if it will work properly on my PC, XP pro, I haven't tried to play any AGI games since getting XP, so I'm not sure if they do work, although it seems to be using NAGI which I've heard of but never used, is it an AGI emulator?

Umm, can you read alphabetically, it is there already, I must say I'm really looking forward to Rise of the Hidden Sun, it looks like one of the best games currently in production.

And Ratracer, I was really confused cause I kept going to edit your link and when I got to it, it was already the right one then when I saved the changes and checked it was the back to the wrong one, I thought something funny was going on until I realised that I had it in twice, one with each link, so I deleted the old one.

I got that C64 emulator that Goldmund mentioned and got some of the games that I used to play as a kid, Pitfall, Pitfall 2, Wizard of Wor, Load Runner, Choplifter, Skate or Die, Decathlon & more. I still actually have these games and the C64, but it's easier & faster to d/l than to actually bother hooking it up. Thanks Goldmund.

It's also the anniversary of that day 28 years ago I decided that it was getting pretty cramped in here, so I best get out and start breathing air, little did I know that it would be like this.

I'm also going to an ex-girlfriends wedding on saturday (valentines day [too bloody romantic{*vomits here}]) we've been pretty good friends for the last 10 years or so, It will be a good party.

I uploaded the larger version of the lights map of the world to make it clearer, It's well worth a look.

http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/wrldnightlightslrg.jpg

Melbourne has the 3rd largest Greek-speaking population in the world, It seems odd that this would occur outside Greece. Although there'd be far more Irish that live outside Ireland, probably in many countries, that speak Irish (even non Irish people speak Irish after a few drinks).

Although there are more Italian & Vietnamese-speaking people, well that is behind English-speaking too.

I'm sure a lot would call themselves Australian these days (like Mark Philippoussis [Residence: Cardiff by the Sea, CA, USA] proud Melbourne boy, tries to hide his slight yank accent) Population 3.66 million, population of Greeks, a lot.

It's amazing how bright Japan is, as well as being a wealthy country, they love thier bright lights and technology.

It's amazing how much light there is in India, I know the population is huge, but I didn't expect the whole country to be covered.

And I expected more lights in Africa for such a populated continent, there are pleanty where Las mentioned, but I guess a lot of the countries are fairly poor and getting food and water is more important than neon lights.
Also I'm sure there is pleanty of deserted land where the wilderbeast roam free (and get caught in fencing)

From that picture you can tell why you can't see many stars in the sky at night in the city compared to going into the country. Well in Europe, Eastern half of North America, Japan, China & India it would be hard to find a dark place.

No wonder that song 'I wear my sunglasses at night' was popular

I wonder how much electricity is wasted for no reason at night, wonder what sort of impact this has on our environment, wonder when solar/wind/hydro energy will be used instead of coal & Uranium. (more commonly)

Just on SQ4 timer issues, it was only the cd talkie version that had those problems, the original floppy version had no problems. It was a funny phase that computers were going through that Sierra didn't foresee.

but trying to run it on a 1.5 Ghtz machine was impossible no matter how much slowing down you tried, I'd imagine my 2.6 Ghtz machine would be worse.

I have the CD version but I found out that the floppy version was worth 'acquiring' for fast machines.

I can't think of a worst list, out of a good bunch I'd have to say the KQ series.
