Hints & Tips / Re:LARRYWILCO- Helium balloon
Wed 04/02/2004 05:39:50
You need to click the balloon on the ship to fly down there, you may need to get rid of the guy on the cliff and get some more money first.

I've added a walkthru to my site in the forum

hey aussie, I've got a program that does exactly what you want

it's called "MIDI2WAV Recorder"

you can record straight through your sound card from midi straight to wav, I've used it and it works like a charm.

I could probably email it to you, it's about 105kb

Been lots of thunderstorms lately, nearly every day, usually late in the afternoon to cool things off, but the other day there was a really close strike, luckily I had unplugged the computer & TV but I had left the cable modem plugged in.

I later attempted to turn on the computer, the lights came on but it didn't even reach the boot screen, I thought Fuck I hope my motherboard is OK I only got it on Xmas.

I have 2 network cards in my machine, one for a local network and one connected to the cable modem. One of the network cards is built into the motherboard and the other is a seperate card. Luckily the seperate card was hooked up to the cable modem because it was the culprit. I had a spare network card and it was all sweet.

Let that be a lesson to you all about electrical storms, unplug all electrical appliances you still want working after the storm, including the cable modem cable from the wall.
Note: It's no good just switching off the switch, a power surge will still pass through all outlets and destroy what they're connected to.

Also Saturday week ago there were thunderstorms all day but little rain, and as I play cricket on saturdays we were playing all day with thunder and lightning coming from all directions (sometimes quite close) and we still played just assuming everything would be OK. Well we won and survived. That night on the news I heard some guy in another match just down the coast was struck and killed while batting & apparently it didn't look too stormy. I still think we were idiots to stay out there, but we did really need that win.

We did it for Hookesey (David Hookes) Played Cricket for Australia in the 70's & 80's and died a couple of weeks ago after being struck by a bouncer outside a pub after celebrating a win, he was the coach of the Victorian state side in Australia. It was huge headlining news over here. RIP

Yeah I remember playing this long ago and I could never finish it cause there was a bug in the gui or something that when I moved the mouse over it and off it the game crashed, I'm pretty sure I asked about it in the other thread, and I can't remember the technique I used to make it crash as it was long ago,

but anyway, I'm glad to see you've been re-enthused to continue the project. Good luck

General Discussion / Re:Eid Mubarak

Happy Eid  Babloyi,

Always good to hear about different feasts and holidays, I reckon if everyone listed their different occasions we'd have a party every day of the year.

We had Australia day over here on 26th of Jan, which is when some pommy bastards decided to come over here 216 years ago with some convicts, slaughter some Aborigines, steal their land and settle. seems strange to celebrate, I guess we all forget the truth. I guess I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for that.

Are cows sacred in Pakistan?

uncheck the import for 640 * 400 and it should import for 320 * 200

IMO as long as you know it is possible to die it's OK, cause then atleast you know to save regularly, remembering to do so becomes part of the game.

Walking deads are silly, especially when you don't know until right near the end that you needed to pick something up a few hours/days ago.

Death can be fun, but I also think that a retry option is the best workaround.

Did you get your discman? just be careful riding, I hope you don't go on too many main roads, it can be quite dangerous not hearing traffic noise.

I know postmen that deliver mail on their motor bikes with headphones, seems crazy to me.

The cars with the chicks sounds better, you can listen to the stereo in that, oh well maybe next year, but by then you'll probably have finished school.

Becoming an adult is something that never happens, you just age constantly, some people just think they act more mature than others, it's all just a state of mind and how you are treated by others. In reality everyone is the kid they were with a few more wrinkles and less brain cells.

EDIT: You too Auhsor, 18 is a great age, enjoy it while you can, I was 18 the other day, well it seems like that, but in 9 days I'll be 28, I have no idea where the 10 years in between went?????

It's probably good in some aspects to have it unified and it can be confusing sometimes. but I would imagine it could become a problem when it comes to programming upgrades so that when upgrading a game to a new version it still works. There seems to also be some obsolete functions in script that are still possible to use.

eg. I think GUIOn & InterfaceOn are the same thing (GUIOn being the more recent)

It would be hard to unify everything as it would confuse people that are fimiliar with the way things already work, but I think CJ has been slowly trying to do this

Eg. sometimes speed was faster when the numbers went up and other functions it was when they went down, but now it's either speed or delay

as for SetCharacterView versus ChangeCharacterView there is a distinctive difference: eg:

If you use "SetCharacterView" it will set the character to a particular view, then if you use "ReleaseCharacterView" it will return to the original view.

If you use "ChangeCharacterView" you can then use "SetCharacterView" to change to another view but then if you use "ReleaseCharacterView" it will return to the view you set with "ChangeCharacterView".

just to make that clearer, just say your original character starts off wearing a hat, then later he loses it, you would use "ChangeCharacterView" to the view without the hat so that if you then  "ReleaseCharacterView" the character doesn't go back to the hat view.

I got a bit worried at one time when I'd used "player stands on hotspot" and when I upgraded it said it was now obsolete use regions, I thought "oh no my game won't work anymore" but it still did, I'm sure CJ is well aware of keeping in old bits of code so that upgrades still work, otherwise people would complain and get pissed off.

So as it sounds like a good idea, it's probably hard to make it all happen especially when new things get added all the time, It's not as though it's all planned out before hand, which is another thing that makes it great.

anyway, I can't really speak for CJ as he is the one that really knows all this stuff, I'm just guessing.

I'd suggest moving to another free server as freewebs is one of the worst in terms of d/l speed, many people have tried it and unless your game is less than 1MB it is pretty useless.

If you want people to play your game check out this thread

http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=8;action=display;threadid=7920

I too have high speed cable and it says 2 hours to d/l

#672
I've got cable, don't know the exact specific speed but it seems to be a lot faster lately, back to what it was like when I originally got it in 2000.

eg. on some fast downloads I get over 600KB/sec (that's "kilo bytes" not "kilo bits") ie. less than 2secs to download 1 Megabyte.

I can't see why I'd need anything faster, but in 10 years, we'll see.

I'm limited to 3gig transfer a month, but the last 3 months they've given us 6gigs for no extra cost, and apparently from March we get 12gig a month for no extra cost as the normal rate. if you go over the limit it cuts you back to 28.8kb for the rest of the month.

I don't think it's easy to go over 12gigs unless you download full movies and mp3's regularly. but when you get extra bandwidth I guess you find new ways to use it.

I couldn't stay up for it, but congrats to all the winners.

The results seem to be what I expected and probably pretty close to how I voted, It was good to see 5 Days get the top awards, it was by far the best game of the ones running, well done Yahtzee if you are around.

I guess former Tierra (AGDI) gave everyone a year off before cleaning up with Q4GII next year

What time is that in Australia? I think it's like 4 am....

I think it's actually 5am Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time Sunday 1/2/04

(if you live in Melbourne like your profile says it will probably be 5am)

4am in QLD time

4.30am SA daylight savings time

3.30am NT time

2am Western standard time

That pretty much covers the times in Australia I think, I could be wrong.

At least it's on a weekend this year.

Congrats DG on getting it all together again and goodluck with the ceremony, I'll try to be there, but it is late (I know it's late for you too) but If I get home by 5am sunday morning I'll log in.

General Discussion / Re:I found work
Thu 29/01/2004 11:42:39
Good to hear you found some work.

I've just been filling in for one of my mates this week as a Postie

It's a bloody tough job, well for me anyway, I'm glad I don't do it permanently, My friend has a mail contract which basically means he doesn't get any holidays, so I offered to help so he could go away for a week.

Man, the first day it took me 16 hours to sort and deliver the mail, except I don't have a motorbike license so I have to deliver it in my car. (starting at 5:30am when it's dark and finishing at 9:30pm in the dark and with no break) Also the mail has to be delivered, it's like a federal offense or something if it isn't done. I worked 40 hours in the first 3 days.
(note: there's no set working hours, just as long as you get it done, obviously you couldn't work those hours all the time, I've been getting faster each day)

1 more day to go, It also sucks cause it's been really stinkin' hot over 30 C every day this week, quite humid too with occasional thunder storms but not much rain.

The postie run is in a really wealthy area out in the sticks in Sydney and there are celebrities and stuff that I deliver to, but no one really internationally famous. It's like a rural type area, it's like the country in the big city, some fucking huge houses and properties, I'd love to live in a place like that away from everything yet still not too far from the city.

sorry to crap on but I've had fuck all sleep this week and worked my arse off, I'm also semi delerious, sun burned & feel like shit right now and have to be up and do it all again in 6 hours.

Good night everyone

I had a look and found some I knew and more I didn't but here they are

Edison, Thomas Alva - friggin' genius
Nielsen, Leslie - funny man
Slater, Kelly - legend surfer
Crow, Sheryl - crappy singer
Aniston, Jennifer - crappy actor

Papps, Alex - some crappy aussie actor from the 80's/90's

These were some I'd never heard of that were born in the same year aswell.

Beckham, Brice - no idea

Neldel, Alexandra - I put her name in google and in the first link, I got to see her tits

It all means absolutely nothing, but it's just an interesting statistical type thingy.

I bet you I was born on the same day as John Smith, and Jenny Jones too.

all I can say is I'm glad Thomas Edison was born on such a great day.

Just another silly statistic, If I was born at exactly the same time but in say Europe or America, my birthday would have been the day before, which would have helped me get into a club 1 day earlier, but now It would be nice just to get asked for ID, well I still do occasionally even 10 years later.

It probably was an intentional selection to create a subconcious meaning but I bet you could find pleanty of examples of buildings that look like what ever you like.

Most buildings are quite phallic, but there is less style these days in almost all buildings, they just go straight up, pretty bland on the outside, some fancy windows. Sure they have probably got some cool features and use a lot of technology but they are definately not as visually appealing as the old masterpiece artworks of days gone by.

check out this modern masterpiece in Las Naranjas home town

now tell me the guy who thought of that didn't wake up one morning, look down and say "Ah, great idea"

My uncle is an architect and has designed some buildings in Sydney, but he's been involved in one of the most interesting pieces of art in Melbourne Australia. "Federation Square" I've only seen pictures but it's "out there" in terms of design. He was Project Director, and it's the new Centrepiece of Melbourne.

Some people say it looks really ugly, but it's all about taste I guess, At least they took a chance and made something different, here's a pic of part of it.

if any one is interested you can check out the site

http://www.federationsquare.com.au/

and should I go with the white, the off white, the bone, the ivory or the beige? Canary yellow indeed

sorry, in joke

Yeah, ScottDoom was right, but it was also to fit a lot in and keep the file size down.

Thanks guys,

it will be finished when it's complete, which is not too far off, probably a few months or so, depends on my spare time and other commitments, but I can see the finish line.

Interesting topic, I'm not much of a historian, but I was speaking to one of my uncles at my grandfathers funeral last year, and he has studied our family history.

He was telling me that it goes back to some Irish Pirates at some stage, It would be interesting to find out more. So I have Pirates blood in me.

On the other side of my family there was this guy

"Sir Isaac Isaacs (1885â€"1948)
Isaac Isaacs was born in Melbourne, Victoria. He was the first Australian-born governor-general. He was an excellent lawyer, a judge, a Member of Parliament in Victoria and a very clever speaker."

I'm not sure where he actually fits in, but somewhere on my mothers side, and it's not really that far back.

When I grow up I want to be a Pirate Lawyer. I've just got the law degree to go, fuck that, a pirate'll do.
