I think it's done so you can re-nominate if you want.  What I'm not sure about is whether what you nominate after your first set is added to what you've already nominated, or completely replaces it.

I'm still somewhat unsure about that point.

'Might' suggests a less likely probability of you becoming a doctor, than 'may'.

Perhaps, that's the reason for your teacher to insist on 'may' (= as not to deliberately degrade
your own statement).

However, grammatically they are both interchangeable and both are 'proper' English in this instance.
Just expressing slightly different things:

I may become a doctor. // Certain connotation of somewhat more confidence.
I might become a doctor. // Not quite as likely of that happening.

I sincerely hope the X-Files are going to track back their roots, roughly the first three seasons.

Without explaining too much or showing too much ('the monster of the week' on a silver platter, as in later seasons)!
