Best News all day.  Well, that and Resonance picking up both Best Indie Adventure and Best Traditional Adventure in the Aggies just now.

...not to forget being runner-up in both categories for Best Adventure of 2012!
Darn, so close! Pah, The Walking Dead...pfffffhhhh :undecided:.
/In case anyone is wondering why we derail this thread - it's DIRECTLY related to sales figures!

Wow, even I didn't know about those two resources Stupot. Thanks a lot! Great advice guys!

Are there differences in how 'up-to-date' these tutorials are (3.2.1?), or is this a really marginal point when it comes
to basic scripting?
I'm asking because densmings video tutorials for example are invaluebable, but they seem to be from quite a while
back.

Totally agree with you. It was a horrible system and it annoyed the heck out of me.
The response time after hitting a key was frankly quite ridiculous, which meant that I usually caught myself furiously mashing random buttons at some point, which is probably the worst result any game interface could trigger.

One idea that immediatley popped into my head rereading your list about the old Lucasgames system:

Assuming the player character has one hand raised to block and the other hand lowered in order to be ready to punch.
By using the left/right arrow keys (just as example) you could alternate between which hand is raised and which hand is ready to punch (i.e. lower), while using the upwards key to actually punch.
The same principle applies to the opponent. Any punches dealt on the blocking hand side would result in minor damage to the enemy, while punching at the side with the opponent's lowered hand would cause a considerable amount of damage (maybe even stagger him/her for a short intervall) and vice versa.

Obviously, an example of a very, very simplified fighting concept. But might be a good base to improve upon...(e.g. additional ducking = arrow down, side steppting etc.)

I've to admit, I know virtually nothing about tablets of any kind, so I wouldn't know about those...

Next AGS winner at the Aggie Awards!

Primordia won in the category 'Best Setting' today.

Congratulations to all of you!

Also in particular to Victor and Mark for making this eerie dystopian vision come alive.
Had a great time testing it. Well deserved, gentlemen!

SCANDAL! LET'S RIOT!!

Looking awsome! Agree with Xenogia, the best visuals yet! Stunning.
The only thing I don't like is the sofa in Rosa's room. Too comicy(?) compared to the rest

Cheers, Vince. Great news!
Best Gameplay - awesome! And, obviously, VERY well deserved, good sir! I remember your trepidation shortly before release: "Am I deluding myself, is Resonance really any good?", whereas all of us outside people where like "HA! Of course not!" :=

"Best Writing - Drama" was another category I'd have seen Resonance in, though seemingly those snotty nosed internet kids with their quick episodic game fixes thought different.
But Resonance is the immediate runner-up in this category and I freely admit to being somewhat biased in this matter.

Huge congrats also to Grim for nabbing the impressive award of 'Best Story'!

I'll keep my fingers crossed for all AGS contenders!  Let's see what's happening later today...

Oh, for CRYING out loud! I just realized I missed the deadline for the
reader's choice poll of the ADVENTURE GAMERS AWARDS!

It seemed to be THE year for AGS games! (Resonance, The Journey Down, Primordia, The Cat Lady! And Adventure Gamers
is such a good site to get the word out. AAAAhhhh, Feck-feck!
(Kept putting it off, "tomorrow after work I'll vote"... :embarrassed:)

I'm such a numbskull! If I could I'd kick my own ass right now. Would anyone mind doing it for me, please!

I hope most of you did fare better and went voting? /(M**+F***@bleep$&#!bleep!bleep!grrrr!)

You too.  Should hopefully be fixed now?!?!

This issue seems to persist. Voted, but the red text of the banner is still claiming I didn't.
As long as our votes count, I don't mind.

All right, since I didn't want you to give up, I tried myself on some 'solidary shadow creation suffering'.

As the supposedly "real" shadows (according to sketchup + lightup - similar to Frito's rendering) turned out to
look rather aweful in this isometric view (as in "not real"), I went with a combination of real and stylized ones
(...after "some" try-outs). (Apparently I had too much free time this weekend )

Unfortunately I got rather carried away, overdid it somewhat and
in the course, ended up butchering your scene kind of:

As Snarky and Frito already mentioned, simple and stylized shadows are easier to do and fit nicer into
the scence (...it reminds me a bit of 'Little Big Adventure', they had 'stylized' shadows under their sprites as well)

It really doesn't matter how bright the light bulb is, and how far the light would travel in "reality", it's
really more important that it creates a coherent mood in your scene.

Playing around with your scene, I also realized that the wing chair is rather too big for those couches. Since the wing chair
looks good in this size, I'd recommend enlarging those couches & the table somewhat.

Also, in order to make those crisp & hard shadows not stand out so much, I'd recommend putting highlights where the light hits
the furnitures. Tried this with the large couch in a really quick and messy way (- not a very good example!).
If you would brighten the left side of the wing chair (from our point of view) for example, it would make the wing chairs shadow
instantly more pleasing to the eye

Other than that, lovely scene!

The scene itself is very good, but I suppose the right side of your scene isn't properly aligned to it's vanishing point:

I tinkered with your scene somewhat to illustrate what I mean (got lazy at one point though and stopped )

My variations are not really accurately aligned either - hopefully just enough to give you a rough impression.

Additionally, perhaps you might want to place a character in the kitchen area, to have an approximation of various object proportions towards each other and in reference to the character (...doors were a bit off, a tad too wide and not quite tall enough, taking your kitchen area as reference... etc.)

Other than that, great scene really! I like it a lot!

Oooh, placeholders...
Might sound strange, but I do actually love the look of it just as it is, Krusbert.
A more simplistic graphical approach, a style of it's own.
That highway scene looks very, very cool!

Will be definitely on the lookout for this one.

when you just substitute one symbol with certain letter (is there a name for them?)

Yeah, it's called a 'substitution cipher'.

QuoteThe coded journal, on other hand, was too easy to crack. I am not kidding. I really suggest game devs stop using that type of cypher ! English language is too vulnerable to brute-forcing when encrypted like that. That was pretty silly of me not to use the Anna's LTM hint, but even without one it was possible to read whole thing in 15 minutes.

I'm not quite sure, why you come to this conclusion. You solved the puzzle exactly the way it's supposed to be solved. That's successful game design in my book. Anna's LTM doesn't really give you that more hints anyway.
Besides you are probably aware, that you could start a personal ('secret') scientific jounrnal in a much different way than:
Spoiler
Dear Anna,
[close]
*hint, hint* *nugde, nudge*

Besides that puzzle is completely optional and just grants the player some additional background info - a bonus if you will.

All right, hopefully to crank up the difficulty somewhat:

The genre is not Sci-Fi, it's not one of David O. Selznick's babies, "Dr. Uwe Boll" wasn't
sitting in the director's chair (Phew!), and it ain't got Steven Seagal in it!
(Thus, aside from the sci-fi stuff, that alone makes it a good film!)

..by the way, credit for the last one goes to LimpingFish. Sneaky way of telling/not telling the movie's title! Great line!

Throw in your guesses, ladies & gentlemen!
