Also I have an extra key for Hollow Knight if anyone wants it.

I'd gladly take it!

Sorry, it's gone!

Full Throttle Remastered is pay-what-you-want in this bundle. Not free but $1 ain't bad.

Also I have an extra key for Hollow Knight if anyone wants it. All gone.

If you go with lighter make sure to fade into the hue of the sky to make it look more natural. Quick example:

Though I would add slightly more contrast to it.

Would love to see this style in a game. Not only is the style itself very pretty, the setting is also very cozy and ripe for some adventuring.

On the topic of gradients, is there a reason why the sky is reversed (lighter on top, darker at the bottom, unlike in reality)?

No reason other than brainfarting. Fixed.

Thanks guys! Hope we get some more entries!

The brightness difference between the blues in my palette is a bit too great to create gradients in such manner without it appearing too distracting. Quick testing resulted in this, which looks ok from afar, but zoomed in it's too cluttered.

Your edit has that nice old Lucas Arts style game vibe to it but it's not necessarily what I'm going for. :) I get what you mean about the monotone brightness issue though, not sure what to do about that without using dithering, which I'm trying to avoid. It doesn't bother me too much but I'll keep it in mind and try to figure something out.

I adjusted the shadows and a few other things and added a few more details. As it is now, I'm fairly happy with it so I'm gonna leave it at that for now. Thanks guys! :)

AnasAbdin, I really liked your idea so I decided to incorporate it! I feel like it's very close to what I wanted in the first place!

Thanks for the paintover! And thanks again to all of you, you've been a big help :)

Well, the original version does have more character, yes. (nod)

I agree, so I'm trying to find a middle ground. Here's another alternative:

Thanks a lot for the comments! The examples and paintovers you provided helped a lot. This is what I came up with without sacrificing the palette:

Does the yellow reflection on the floor look too weird, should I just go with the first one? Anything else you can think of?

I'd appreciate some input on this work in progress background before I start adding more detail. Mostly I'm looking for advice on how to get the sunlight right. I'm going for that really sharp contrast between cold blue and warm orange but I don't want it to look too out of place. I'm restricting myself to use the EDG32 color palette, so only these colors are available:

Nice theme, I haven't done isometric stuff in ages so this was a nice chance to revisit it! Here's my entry:

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I really hate that phrase; it basically means "if it could be worse, don't ever try to improve it."

What it really means is trying to force an improvement/add-on/update on a working concept can lead to undesirable complications. All I'm saying is that at least in my opinion there hasn't been anything that especially requires improvement in the past, the competition has been very enjoyable as it is and there's nothing wrong with keeping up with traditions, and so far I haven't read any suggestions that would significantlty improve anything. However, if the majority of people want to change certain things, then great! Democracy is awesome!

...Are these rules going to be similar this year?

I think it would be a good idea to stick to the old rules. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Same goes with having a topic/theme. I find it unnecessary to try to unify all the entries and I doubt people will need a theme to spark their inspiration. What I look forward to most is the variety in the entries. Also if someone is a sad enough case to actually cheat in this little hobbyist contest, I say let them (not that this has ever been a problem). Having a one week restriction is a big enough limitation and in the past it has been nice to think up a design for the game before starting to work on it. Would be annoying to have to conform your design to a chosen theme at the last minute for no real benefit.

That being said, wether or not I'll have time to enter, and whatever the ruleset ends up being, I look forward to a new OROW! It's about bloody time we had one. :cheesy:

Critics' Lounge / Re: Pixel me this!

The sprite has a nice form. My problem was with the colors. Most importantly it lacks contrast and some color choices are a bit too bright and clashing with the rest of the sprite, most notably the hair. There were also a few extra colors that were too close to their neighbor colors to be useful. I did a rough paintover to demonstrate my points. I also tried fixing some inconsistent looking shading but those were quite minor changes.

Also, it's often good practice not to use pure black but instead use an off-black color like a really dark purple, as I've done here.

The high resolution portrait looks great. :)

Saw this earlier today and it looks excellent! The pixel art is spectacular. I'm interested to see how well the genre mash works in practice.

So what, IMO would be nice, is if the game developer (the person who added the game to DB) had an extra option on the games page something like "Flag for rating". Then the panel would see a list of the flagged games knowing the developer is keen to have it rated (and that the games actual developer is active and present in the request), and could prioritize those ones.

That feature would probably cancel itself out though, because everyone who adds their game to the database would flag that option and therefore no game would be prioritized over the rest so the situation stays the same.

Quote from: Mods on Fri 23/01/2015 07:32:50
Additionally it could just be available to everyone and the highest ranking/flagged games get the rating priority.

This raises another problem as games with bad user ratings get much less attention. If a prioritizing system was implemented I think a better solution would be to prioritize games that haven't been rated yet by date so older games get priority over new ones since new additions get exposure regardless of rating anyway.

Thanks for the nice comments! Yes, the game was built with Game Maker Studio. :) We just released an update with some bug fixes and a new christmas themed level.
