Neil Dnuma has passed me the responsibility of starting a new Comic Contest. So here it is. And the theme of this contest iiiissss...

Evolution

Used in many other competitions before, I know. Don't hate me.

Then for some restrictions:

  • Your comic must have either 3 or 6 frames. So, for example, 2- or 4-frame comics wouldn't qualify. (If many people find this rule too restrictive I can remove it.)
  • The comic must include the word "explosion" somewhere in it.

    Be inventive, have fun.

Okay, so let's say I have a label with a long string in it. I want to remove a certain number of lines/rows from the top of the label. So I guess I need to know how long (in characters) the lines are so I can use Substring to remove the lines.

How could I do this, when the string changes a lot in the game and the characters in the font are not all the same size?

I need this kind of script because if the string gets too long (in this case 15 rows) I need to remove some rows from the top of the label so that more text can fit in.

Okay, so here's the deal. Last night I was happily scripting something with AGS, skyping with Ishmael, IRCing and doing the stuff I usually do. Well, then suddenly when I tried to press ALT+F4 to close a window, I think I accidently pressed some other buttons aswell, my monitor shut down.

I was very confused. The computer was still running, the monitor was still on, but the screen was black. The light in the down-right corner of the monitor was blinking which usually means the power of the PC is turned off. But it wasn't...

So I thought "Of course restarting the computer helps! It always does!". So I manually restarted it... but it didn't work. The screen worked perfectly when the computer was restarting, but as soon as Windows started, it shut down again.

My brother suspects that the resolution had somehow turned so high my monitor couldn't display it anymore. Does that make any sense? Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this situation? I'd really want to get my computer working again.

Oh, and if anyone's wondering, I'm using my laptop to send this message.

I feel a bit bad about posting this, because it's such a small thing but I would find it very useful. Could there be a function like Textbox.DisableCursor() and .EnableCursor() added in AGS?

For me this would be important because I have many textboxes in the same GUI and only one of them is enabled at a time. It would be nice to have the cursors disabled from those textboxes that are not enabled.

Also if someone knows a good workaround for this, please share. :) I tried changing the font to the same font that doesn't have the cursor character in it but for some reason the cursor still appears in the box, so I know that won't work.

General Discussion / Elephant's Dream
Mon 22/05/2006 10:39:32
Elephant's Dream is a short 10 minutes 3d movie that is completely made with free or open source programs. I think Blender is what they were mainly using for it. You can download the free movie from: http://orange.blender.org/
The filesize is pretty huge but then again the quality is very high.

I watched it yesterday and it was quite interesting and absurd. And the graphics of the film were amazing! The only thing I really didn't like about it was the, in my opinion a bit poor voice acting. But it's really worth a watch!

Just thought I'd share this, in case someone doesn't know about it yet. :)

I'm making a save GUI. I need to know how I can check if a certain agssave-file already exists. For example, let's say I want to check if "agssave.001"-file exists. What kind of scripting should I use for this?

This is because I want to make sure my save GUI doesn't save over any agssave file if it already exists in the compiled folder.

I hope you know what I mean. Thanks. :)

I didn't find any function that would allow you to change GUI border and/or GUI background color from the global script. This would be a very useful feature to have.

Also, if there is one but I just didn't find it, please tell me.

Thank you.

I would really find this feature useful. Similiar to changing the pixel gap between dialog options, but with label lines. Could this be added to the newest version?

For example:

"string text;" has the value of "Sample text".

This text has 11 characters. How could I store the number into an int. So that

int textnumber;

would have the value 11.

Completed Game Announcements / Buna Wants Beer
Fri 26/08/2005 12:51:42
It's a bit short and quite easy game (made for the MAGS compo this month). You play as Buna who wants beer. But he has no money. So you must get him some money.

Here's a screenie:

The game is very rushed because I kinda ran out of time while doing it. Please report any bugs you may find also.

.:DOWNLOAD HERE:.

If you liked this game, don't forget to vote for it!

General Discussion / KEO satellite

Would you like to send a letter to 50 000 years future?

If you would not, then just ignore this. Thank you and have a nice day.

But if you would, you really should check this site out: http://www.keo.org/uk/pages/default.html

I found out about this today and this whole idea sound very interesting. What are your thoughts about this project?

Just a simple question: Is it possible to make an animated preload screen? Like PRELOAD.gif for example?

I'm not happy with him yet, so C&C please.

Any comments?

You can choose the alignment (left, centre, right) of label texts in GUIs, but you can't choose it in list boxes or text boxes. This would be useful feature.

The Rumpus Room / Happy Birthday Thread!
Tue 10/05/2005 15:43:06
I started this thread because I thought that there are many people here who want to congrat other AGS'ers on their birthdays but doesn't want to start a new thread for it every day. So please feel free to post your birthday speeches and congratulations here.

But please do not fill this thread with posts like: "happee birthday @ all those who hav birthday today!". Also there is no sense in congratulating people who you don't know at all.

Okay, that's all about it. Let the parties begin!

Is there anyone here who's planning on coming to Kemi's Comic Festival from Finland or Sweden or anywhere near Kemi? The festivals are held 13.-15.5. Just thought I'd ask. :)

Here's more information about it: http://www.kemi.fi/sarjis/

I'm working on a MAGS game and I want to have these different cursor modes in it: walk, look, use, take, talk. I know how to make new cursor modes and how to use them. But if I make a new one, it will appear after the use inventory mode. So when I right click my mouse, the cursor modes come like this: walk-look-use-talk-active inventory item-take. I want to change the place of take mode before the active item. I remember Darth Mandarbs "A Friend Indeed" had same kind of problem and it was pretty annoying.

I hope you understand what I mean.

General Discussion / RuneScape, anyone?
Wed 04/05/2005 20:28:32
I just tried RuneScape for the first time a few days ago and I found it pretty nice. Okay, it may not be the best multiplayer RPG there is, but it still is fun. I just wanted to know if there's anybody here who plays it.

What's this about:

  • Participants will draw a comicstrip following the given theme and rules.
  • You are allowed to use any technique in your drawing. But if you use computer you are not allowed to copy and paste ready pictures.
  • Each competition will last 15 days.
  • The starter of each competition will decide the winner.
  • The winner will decide the theme for the next competition.

Ok, this is the first comic competition so let's take a theme which everyone is probably familiar with.

    AGS Game Characters for Sail

I think the title explains it all. All the characters in the comic must be from some game made with AGS. The happening place is a boat or a ship. Or anything that travels on water. Other than that, I give you free hands. The style is free. Use your imagination.
