General Discussion / Elephant's Dream
Mon 22/05/2006 10:39:32
Elephant's Dream is a short 10 minutes 3d movie that is completely made with free or open source programs. I think Blender is what they were mainly using for it. You can download the free movie from: http://orange.blender.org/
The filesize is pretty huge but then again the quality is very high.

I watched it yesterday and it was quite interesting and absurd. And the graphics of the film were amazing! The only thing I really didn't like about it was the, in my opinion a bit poor voice acting. But it's really worth a watch!

Just thought I'd share this, in case someone doesn't know about it yet. :)

Spoiler

Loom:
1. Bobbin Threadbare (I don't think I spelled the last name right... oh well)
2. -
3. I think his name was Rusty. At least his nickname.

Monkey Island:
1. Carla
2. Fester Shinetop
3. Wally

Indianan Jones:
1. Indiana Jones and Sophia... something.
2. -
3. -

Space Quest:
1. -
2. Elmo Pug
3. If you mean the one in SQ5 where you battle WD-40, then it's Kiz Urazgubi or something like that. Can't quite remember how it's spelled.

Quest For Glory:
1. -
2. Salim
3. Simba

Bonus:
This is embarrasing... I can't even remember Hugo's girlfriend's name D:
[close]

With protagonist you did mean the main hero, right? What a strange word.

Are people getting too lazy to draw their own sprites these days? :(

I'll probably enter this one. I like the theme.

Edit:

Well, here he is. 21 colors + transparency. 60x80.

3p: Ghormak
2p: Oz

There, Obi wins...

Ah yes, I thought it would be done in a similiar way with File.Open. I just didn't know how exactly this could be done, but apparently it's very simple. Thanks for the quick answer.

I'm making a save GUI. I need to know how I can check if a certain agssave-file already exists. For example, let's say I want to check if "agssave.001"-file exists. What kind of scripting should I use for this?

This is because I want to make sure my save GUI doesn't save over any agssave file if it already exists in the compiled folder.

I hope you know what I mean. Thanks. :)

You say you're not remaking Loom. Then why are you remaking Loom backgrounds, when you obviously would have the skills to make some awesome original backgrounds yourself? I'd like to hear some more information about this. Is this some kind of Loom fangame based in the world of Loom, perhaps?

I hope this doesn't mean you have completely stopped working on the Character3D plugin. ;D

Okay, I've been playing this a bit and here are some comments, negative and positive.

I haven't finished the game yet but this far all it has been is pretty much this: get key -> open locked door. It's just full of "get inventory -> use inventory -> get points -> get new inventory -> ..." kind of puzzles. So I really suggest you to think more about your puzzles in the games you'll hopefully make in the future. :)

I quite liked the visual side of this game. The graphics, in all their simplicity (is that even a word? :P), looked very appealing to me. There didn't seem to be very much music in this game, but I liked the few songs that were playing in the background.

The idea of this game's story is funny. Heh, I even know some people who are similiar to Bob, they just need to vandalise everything without any particular reason. A cool idea to make a game of. :D

This is a good game for your first one, but in my opinion you just need to think through your puzzle designing a bit more. Because puzzles are probably the most important part of adventure game design. Congratulations on finishing this project though! Finishing a game is a reason enough to be proud of it! :)

(for example supporting milk-shape 3D objects)

I think this kind of thing can already be done with Character 3D. :)

Hey Zaidyer, a nice sprite you have there. One thing I would change is the colors of that shirt, because those tones of red and blue together look kind of confusing to me. It would probably help if the red wasn't so bright.

I like it how you've used double pixelling in some places. It makes it look more cartoony (thick outlines). Good job so far! :)

Should I find this amusing? Because I don't.

Thank you for doing this, CJ. It's a good idea, although, as you mentioned, it has its drawbacks too. :\

But hopefully this will make the system more balanced.

id recommend you use less photos for bgs because to be honest, they make it look a bit sloppy.

I disagree. I think the usage of photos are part of the style and add a lot to it.

Good luck with your game, timlump! I dig the unique style of this one. And the game has an interesting concept. :)

I just realized I have played Bert - The Newsreader before I had even discovered AGS. I found it on a CD that included much freeware games probably sometime in 2004. So I guess that is the first AGS game I've really played.

I just played the demo and I really want to see the rest now. This is a good start, nice job for your first game. As a bit of advice, I would say some kind of intro in the beginning of the game would be nice. :)

Good luck with this!
