Hints & Tips / Off The Clock
Fri 29/01/2021 09:33:34
I am stuck quite at the beginning:

Spoiler
I activated the elevator, got some stuff in my inventory (I don't remember what it is, there is no description for it), use the party horn on another guy, and was able to place, for whatever reason, a broken bottle over the guy in the observatory. I assume I have to wake up or move him with the crystal and later get the ring to cut the glass dome, but I have no idea how.

How do the AGS Awards work?
(This is information mostly for new members, same procedure as every year)

Spoiler
Every year, the AGS community embarks on a quest to find the best games made in the last year. All games are eligible, that were added to the AGS Database in the year 2020. There is a For Your Consideration thread where authors can promote their games and players get a good overview what might be worth playing.

The awards are a two-step process: First there is a nomination phase where all community members can nominate the eligible games in several categories (it will be the same categories as last year). The top five games of each category make it to the voting (as long as they've received at least five nominations). Again, all members of the community can vote on their favourite games.
The final result is then announced in a live ceremony that can be joined either with a special client or any regular irc client.

Have you made a game in 2020 and want it to compete in the AGS Awards 2020? This is the topic where to showcase it!
Post a database link, a brief description and some pictures (thumbnails preferred, here is an excellent FYC post from last year).

Do not be shy, by posting your game you are helping the players who will take some of their time to play/nominate/vote!

Usual remarks:

  • please include a link to your games page on the AGS games database
  • if you think a game deserves mention but the author isn't around, post a FYC for them! The more worthy games we get here, the better it is for everyone!
  • this thread is for FYC posts only, if you want to discuss the awards go here!

Post your games here before nominations start. The earlier you post, the more time people have to play your game!

...whenver I try editing my ags game entry (click on this hyperlink) and correct the link, I get a message that "You must enter at least one author before submitting. Please go back and correct this," rendering me unable to change this.

If you have any advice on how to prevent this so I can hypothetically reupload edited versions of the game, I would be thankful.

I tried to fix the DB entry, but I also don't see the boxes for entering the authors for this very game page (for others it works).

AGS Awards Ceremony Client Download v5.0.40

Windows (.zip) – 253 MB [mirror]
MacOS (.zip) – 261 MB [mirror]
Linux (.tar.gz) – 261 MB [mirror]

Spoiler
Note on Mac client:
Because the Mac build was made without an Apple developer license, you may get a security alert when you try to run it, and it may refuse to run. In order to get around this, instead of double-clicking the file, right-click (Ctrl-click) and choose "Open" from the menu.

Note on Linux client:
The client is built with AGS 3.4.3, which has a dependency on libpng12.so.0. See the GitHub issue tracker for fix. (Edit: The download has now been repackaged with the library included.)

As before, the Mac and Linux versions do not have clipboard support (copy-paste from outside the app).

General Discussion / RIP Ghost
Sun 29/12/2019 14:25:47
I'm sad to announce that Ghost has passed away.

Even though he was not active for some time anymore, he was still a highly valued member of the community. He delighted us with tons of games and wonderful drawings as well as being just a great guy. I am glad that I had the pleasure to collaborate with him on a few occasions.

I like to believe that he is indeed a ghost now, watching us while baking cakes and arranging furniture in a RAM house.

Farewell, Ghost!

I guess everyone knows the drill by now so:

Have you made any game with AGS this year? This is a friendly reminder to add your game to the AGS database. Only games that were added to the database in 2019 are eligible for the AGS Awards 2019.

Do you have some half done game or unfinished MAGS entry lying around your hard disk? Maybe you can find some time during the holidays and finish it off.

What are you waiting for?

<<  COLORING BALL: Christmas Decoration  >>

Santa got the Christmas decoration from the attic to decorate his house.
What did he find there? Did maybe something not so pretty slip into one of the boxes?

I'm looking forward to see what he finds!

Just pick a shape and color it as you see fit!

You may:

-color the outlines
-rotate the sprites 90°, 180° or 270°
-flip the sprites horizontally and/or vertically
-use animation
-submit multiple entries
-use as many colours as you want

The trophies:

To be announced (and made).

The deadline:

Entries are accepted until December 24th. We want to get the house ready for Christmas in time, you know?

The Rumpus Room / Open the puzzle pod
Tue 26/11/2019 12:11:56
My colleague brought a puzzle pod to work. This is basically a box with a combination lock of five letters.
One person fills it with chocolate and sets the word that is required to open it. Then everyone has to solve a puzzle to find the solution and get to take a piece out of the box.
Would you like to start puzzling here as well?

[imgzoom]https://www.7gadgets.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/nhh.jpg[/imgzoom]

Here is the current puzzle that I set up:

1. f3 e5
2. g4 (?)h4#

The rules:

  • The answer is a 5 letter word
  • Use spoiler tags for posting answers but also for posting ideas and theories
  • Don't google the solution. However, you may use Wikipedia or Google to look up something, i.e. if you think the puzzle is about pigeons, you can read about the topic.
  • The first person who solves the puzzle can create a new one
#53
The game DB offers only one main download link and one backup. But now AGS can compile native Linux versions of the game and it is possible to build Android packages.
It would be great to offer specific download links for various OS.
Additionally it would be nice to specifically search for games that provide e.g. Linux builds.

Is the address forwarded to developers or others or is it just stored by itch? I understand your reservations, just wanting to make sure what the situation is.

Hi!

The game I'm currently working on is intended to be played either on PC or on phone/tablet. It is running nicely on my phone when I copy it to my AGS folder and start it from the AGS app. However, I don't want to show the mouse cursor when running on a touch device.

Is is possible to detect if the game is running on a touch device? Or do I have to provide a second game pack for mobile? Are there compiler switches I can use in combination with ifdev so I don't have to change the code every time I want to build for the other platform?
Or is it best/easiest to build a real apk for my game?
#56
Hi guys!

I'm a total noob regarding using voice acting in AGS. I used the search but didn't find anything.

In my code, I have a function that sets
Code: ags
currentText = "A lemon!";

Later, I will call
Code: ags
player.Say(currentText);

I get all those texts included in the translation file, but they are neither in the speechref.txt nor in VoiceSpeech.txt
Is it even possible what I want to do? Or should I just import those lines as normal sound and play it? I don't want to show the text anyway, just play the voice acting.

Completed Game Announcements / Cave of Avarice
Sun 02/06/2019 20:06:00

Download Cave of Avarice

The mirror provides a Linux version.

A former Dahomey Amazon turned mercenary has been hired by two explorers for leading them to a cave said to contain a great treasure. The mercenary has been tasked with guarding the entrance while the two explorers enter, but as gunshots are heard from within only to be followed by silence, she chooses to investigate...

Blondbraid: Story, graphics, animations and writing
cat: Puzzle design, writing and coding
Slasher: Puzzle design, writing and testing
CaptainD: Writing and additional testing

Made for MAGS May 2019

I strongly suggest playing the game in fullscreen mode with sound turned on for the best experience of the atmosphere.
