Critics' Lounge / Re: An Anim8or surprise

Thanks, selmiak. Appreciated. Here's the gal in Anim8or:

She has feet, which is more than Ben304 gave her. ;) I'll just have to remember to angle them out a bit, or use a bit different color on the shoe tips.

The Pelican had pretty good eyes, but I've subdivided the mesh a couple of times, and things seem to "move" around. I intended to try to fix the model by repainting the eyes, and the area around the bag under the beak.

Edit: I should also add that the gal's face came out of FaceShop. Her body, however, is all mine.

Edit 2 (12/2/13): I was playing around with some DAZ Studio figures today, and I've concluded there really isn't any difference in the way the Anim8or stuff looks in a default game. It all gets blocky and needs retouching. My surprise wasn't so surprising, it appears. Have to figure out what I was doing before that was bringing all the junk in. Sorry.

Critics' Lounge / An Anim8or surprise

I finally got around to dumping some of my Anim8or models into the default game: the pelican, and my take on the female from one of the OSD games. When I shrink the images down to game size, I lose detail, and Anim8or also loses the details. But, all the other attempts outside Anim8or also brought in a bunch of garbage around the figure, stuff that Construed started a lenghty thread about and required some playing with to correct. This is a screen capture of unretouched images generated by Anim8or at about 80x80 pixels:

This looks almost usable, to me, and would definately cut down on the amount of retouching required. Opinions, please?

Edit: After the fact, I got to thinking maybe the artifacts were there, but were shades of dark colors. So, I put in a white background:

My apologies. On a separate thread, in this very forum, I implied that modeling a snowman was easier than modeling a turkey. It is untrue. Here's my evidence, in a slide show format:

I will endeavor to be more accurate in the future. Someone, with talent, could probably make a pretty neat animation of this, with facial reactions to the various body changes. I may try to do that, but it probably won't work right.

Modeling in Anim8or. Basic snowman concept came from a Blender tutorial site: http://www.katsbits.com/

I blame it all on Baron... I was going to wait and see if I could come up with something better, but now that Tabata has posted another one of those images that work upside down and backwards... Well, I have enough trouble making something that is recognizable in one direction. So, here it is:

So, what does a snorkling fish have to do with a magical Christmas? Not a clue. Maybe he's going over the estuary, to Grand Mother's Lake, today. I duuno...

Another one.

Almost need an assistant to help keep the various files in order. I'm finding out why some of the things a tutorial on Hexagon was stressing are important. You know, drawing the stuff might not be such a bad idea, afterall. Only, I can't do that either. Made in Anim8or.

@Cat

Nine frames in the animation, but thanks to your question I realized I really only needed four of them to get the same result:

Here are the frames:

I'm still having to run the gif faster than I think it should be.

@Eric

That's kind of what I was doing with the squashed sphere in Bryce.

Edit:

Also been working on this:

I need to add some bones for the feet, and I'm not happy with the feet, in general. I'm also having a devil of a time with the weight painting where the neck joins the breast; I can't seem to get rid of the ridge. I also should put more motion in the upper section of the wing. These are things I've noticed, Anything else? I wanted kind of a goofy looking bird.

Critics' Lounge / Props, as in planes

Curious how you folks approach a spinning propeller on a plane? Here's what I have:

It looks alright, but I had to speed it up, via the gif timing, to get it to look like it does. When I was trying this stuff in Bryce, I usually just gave up and put a squashed sphere in place of the blades, then used a bumpy glass texture on the sphere. Any secrets you care to share? Anim8or model.

Okay. The deadline will be December 10, 2013.

Edit: And get well!
#529
Adeel, how does December 10th sound?

You wouldn't have liked the one I had going in Blender! Sigh... Decided to try your alter-ego:

#531
Since no one wanted to come out and play, and since Adeel suggested I try again, and subject to moderator approval, let us try this:

Just give us a recent background you've been working on, or recently completed. Theme/genre/topic will be immaterial. Judge the submissions, if any, on the following criteria:

     Will it work as a background in a game?

     Does it have technical merit?

I'd prefer recent work, rather than going back ten years to an image that you feel is the best work you've ever done. I will not, however, specify an exact definition of recent. I'll trust your honesty.

Since I've already taken up a lot of time, I think this can and should be a very short Blitz. In this instance, December 10, 2013 should give folks enough time to find and respond to this post.

Again, this is subject to moderator approval.
#532
Okay, subject to moderator approval. I'll post something very shortly.
#533
Reluctant to do that, since this one crashed and burned. Hoped Iceboty V7000a would offer some advice on what should happen next. Adeel, have an idea for the next Blitz? If I start a second one, they still may not come out and play. It could go on forever. I don't want to be the guy who killed the Blitz.

I worked some on the dance, rigging and skinning. Nothing to write home about, but my meshes seem to be fairly well behaved.

Blender continues to elude my grasp, so this is still Anim8or.

Edit:

Realizing that Thanksgiving isn't an international holiday, I still thought I'd pass this along with my thanks for you folks putting up with me:

I modeled the snowman character in Anim8or, but the concept came from a Blender tutorial at http://www.katsbits.com/

I couldn't even get through the modeling portion of the tutorial in Blender.

I'd had the model rigged and skinned at one point in time, but Anim8or crashed and I realized I had not saved since I finished the model. I'd lost the bones and the weight painting. His avatar dance was my intended animation, but I've been reluctant to go back and try it again.

Decided to make a few T-shirts for Ponch, to help cover up his studly hungwellness.

Thanks, Ponch, for putting up with this! I'm having fun, but I may be the only one. Since I don't have a Tokyo street scene, nor have I rigged PonchZilla, I'm running out of things to do with Gumby Ponch.

Or, maybe... a chicken.

Speaking of square things, I recently had the opportunity to tour the Square Peniks research lab. I was much impressed with their recent advances in audio technology. I'm posting this; it is from an ad campaign that will begin shortly.

A terrible accident with the milking machine. Ponch doesn't like to talk about it.

@Ghost

And it's round, too. Square seems to work pretty well for Sponge Bob.
